Thanks Bill Fahy for your research. I have some of that data as I visited Ireland in 1980 . My sister and I had hoped to visit again but age and aches are preventing it. I have a web site http://www.design-cllients.com/geneweb put together by my daughter from my PAF file. My brick wall is my great grandfather, Richard Chambers, probably born before 1850. Accordilng to legend, he died young and left two children, Charles and Richard. His wife was Mary Tyner, but I think Tyner was her name from a second marriage as Charles had half-brothers named Tyner Rose Roberts
This John Murphy, from Bantry, owned a Mill and a BREWERY. I imagine it was just a very small one c. mid 1700s. Has anyone heard of a brewery around that area?. Hi, Like Rose, I keep reading all the posts hoping maybe someone will be looking for my family. Our earliest DALTON is MATTHEW, born circa 1750. Tradition has it that the family came to Newfoundland,Canada from County Cork. It seems that Matthew may have been a "By boat Fisherman", ( seasonal fisherman who rented fishing rooms and hired local labour ) who came to Newfoundland on ships from the Poole/ Dorset area in England, on a seasonal basis before actually settling here. He may have married a lady from England. Either that or is mother may have been from there. In Nl, he moved from Broad Cove, Conception Bay to Western Bay and eventually to Little Catalina, in Trinity Bay, where I grew up. The names Philip / George / Thomas/ James and John are prominent. Would appreciate any help or direction. Velma Dalton Boudreau > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Chambers Family in County Cork (Roselma Roberts) > 2. Re: Chambers Family in County Cork (Bill Fahy) > 3. Hi listers. For those who have not seen this yet: To celebrate 150 years of publication, the Irish Times are allowing free access to their digital archive (1859 onwards) from 27 March to 6 April. http://www.irishtimes.com/150/ Regards, Patsy - New Zealand
Rose, The Family History Library has a listing in their new search facility http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347 for James Chambers birth in the Jul-Sep quarter of 1882. The Microfilm is #0101058 Volume 5 Page 237. A James Chambers is also listed in the United States Census of 1900 at Steeltown Borough, Dauphin, Pa. born Ireland 1882 and Immigration year 1885. I read every posting to the Irish web sites and have yet to see someone searching my family. My father, James Francis Chambers, was born to Charles Chambers and Johanna Mahoney in or near Dunmanway and christened in St. Patricks in Dunmanway around 1882. Does anyone have any information? Hi David, Have you tried Findmypast? Their records begin in 1890. It is free to do a name search although you have to pay for the actual record. They have six Mascalls (not Mescall) or variations of the name to Australia, the one to Albany, WA does not have a Christian name but the others are not Bartholomew. I have found most of the Irish immigrants were sponsored by members of their own family. Hi David, I cannot find a birth record for Bartholomew in Cork in 1871, I have used variations on the name There is a Bartholomew Dublin 1877, Clare 1876, Kilkenny 1879, that is it for 1871 +- 10 years I wonder did he have any other first names? I have contacted all the state and national archives in Australia in hopes of finding a clue about an ancestor who supposedly emigrated from Cork to Australia in the 1890s. But the Australian archives haven't found any record of him. I'm fairly certain that he didn't emigrate to the USA - at least he doesn't show up in census or passenger list records. I would appreciate any suggestions about continuing the Australian search. The only information I have is: Name - Bartholomew Mescall DoB - March 1871 PoB - Kilpatrick, Kilpatrick, Co. Cork Parents - Denis Mescall & Mary Murphy Dave Collins Hudson, Mass., USA

Hi Jackie - these are the reference numbers for the microfilms at the National Library of Ireland (NLI) in Dublin. You need the POS (I think it means Positive but not sure on that) numbers to order the films which can then be viewed on the readers there. John Grenham has provided extensive information on this and on what is available both online and offline in his books 'Tracing Your Irish Ancestors'. The records are not online - and in most cases, not likely to be. The NLI has had a running battle with some parts of the church over even the holding of their records but it is still possible to view them in person at the Library. Hope this makes sense.
