Sheila, If you have a scanner, you can make your own overlays using the maps in "A New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland" by Brian Mitchell, 2nd ed. ISBN 0-8063-1684-5. From the work I am doing on plaenames in Co. Tipperary, I can give a warning that the boundaries of the church parishes changed a lot over time, and there is the rare change in the boundaries of a civil parish. I hve been searching for my husbands family for 56 years. I so wanted to find out more on his Riordan family before he died, but I didn't. Jeremiah Riordan b abt1800 in Co. Cork married Honora Barrett b abt1810 also of Co. Cork. Their son John was born in1832 according to his death certificate here in the States. He married Margaret Carroll b 1837 both born in Co. Cork and they came to Massachusetts, USA bef 1857 as that is when their son Jeremiah was born here. Any and all help would be appreciated. Dorothy J. Smith New Hampshire, USA
Hi all listed below, Another suggestion to receive Irish information is perhaps use another address or open a yahoo or Hotmail account as these all went through no problem. If you do, send the request to [email protected] so as not to fill the Cork list with requests. I can't even send you an email without attachments as your servers are blocking mine. Thank you to all who replied to my enquiry, to Sharon and David, and I will try to get hold of Brian Mitchell's book, and also to Sheila and Murray in Christchurch who is doing some seriously sterling work!! I am sure that many people will have good reason to thank him and his helpers. When I first began to look into my father's family in Cork, I could not understand how they appeared to be in three different parishes - until I got the copy of the Griffith's Valuation map from the Valuation Office in Dublin and realised that they had lived just where three parishes met!! If I had had any sense, I should have been able to work that one out for myself...... Mary
I have started to do this in Northern Ireland and Limerick. My website (see link below) shows maps of all Civil Parishes in NI and Limerick together with maps or the locations of many townlands, counties, PLUs, Baronies, RC Parishes and modern Councils. They are overlaid onto Google Maps and so you can see their location in relation to both the map and satellite imagery. It is fairly laborious and so it is very much a work in progress, but with the help of others, all townlands in Fermanagh are mapped as well as many in Tyrone, Antrim and Derry. Cork is high on the list of priorities! For those that got rejected, I signed up for a Yahoo account, Jenny sent me the files to that account. I was then able to forward them all to my comcast. account. It was pretty easy, I'm not computer savvy, and it worked great. Hello Mary, There is an OUTSIDE chance that you can get that information by writing to the parish. I have had some luck by directly contacting parishes and asking what the process is for getting such records and offering to make a donation if the records are available. Contact information will be found at <http://www.corkandross.org/parishes.jsp?parishID=23 >. Hello list, I am trying to find information about my g/g/grandfather Martin HOOLEY. I found this name in Cheshire in 1841 but he was unmarried. My g/grandfather Thomas HOOLEY was born 1836 Ireland and on his marriage certificate in 1857, it showed his fathers name was Martin, who was deceased at that time. I have never found this name on any searches I have done in Ireland. My late father said that the name of Thomas has been carried down for many generations and I thought all his ancestors were named Thomas. His grandfather, father, himself and his son all Thomas. I found a Thomas HOOLEY in the Griffiths Valuation of Ireland 1848-1864. His address is Ballycatteen, Templetrine, Cork. Could some kind person have any ideas of how I can find the birth of my g/grandfather Thomas Hooley b.1836 in Ireland please. Possibly the above address might be his family. Are there any records I could search similar to a census of that time please? Or any bmd's online I can search, pre 1836? This is a brickwall for my family history and I am anxious to complete it for my family. Many thanks, Hoping to hear from some lister, Mary in North Queensland Aus.

I second Mary's request: does anyone know of a map that overlays civil and church parishes? Years ago I tried exercising my feeble PhotoShop capabilities to create one, but most of the maps I had were hand-drawn (although published) and not detailed enough. I know it's important: in my own Connolly family from Cork, nominally my family members belonged to Kilmacabea parish, and that's where their vital statistics are recorded, in Leap. But the family graveyard was at the old church at Drinagh West, which was physically closer--and in a different parish. If we could superimpose townlands over parish boundaries, it would be very helpful.
