I have in my possession a copy of the South African Constabulary War Records of one E1350 rd Class Tpr (Signaller) Alexander Starrett, son of Robert Starrett, born in Ramelton Co Donegal but residing at the time of enlistment in Port Glasgow Scotland. He applied for enlistment at the Recruiting Office in Glasgow on 25 Jan 1900 and his Articles of Agreement were signed on 8 Feb 1901. On his attestation paper the question is asked whether he has ever served in any other British Regiments and his reply was Yes - 1st Bn A.S. Highlanders. He landed in Cape Town on 27th March 1901 and his attestation paper was signed on 2 April 1901 to serve 3 years. He was discharged on 26 March 1904. The details on the Record of Conduct of Service are as follows: Name: A. Starrett Date of Birth: 1.4.1877 Married or Single: Single Register No: 1350 Height: 5' 6 1/2" Calling: Labourer Eyes: Grey Hair: Brown Complexion: Pale Weight: 10 st 2 lbs Religion: Presbyterian Country: Ireland Next of Kin: R Starrett Address: 137 Bouvire St, Port Glasgow. From what I can gather - he requested three month's leave pending discharge and requested re-enlistment on his return. However a note on his recruiting record dated 15 Oct 1906 states "...married men are not accepted." It woud then appear that he returned to Ireland to marry. He must have returned to South Africa at some stage because on 13 Dec 1905 he gave his address as 3 Whitehill Terrace Cathcart (Eastern Cape Province South Africa). My gg grandfather was also a Robert Starrett but he was from Malin Co Donegal and I do not know if there is a connection between the family from Malin Inishowen and Robert Starrett of Ramelton. Is there anyone who can shed some light on this family from Ramelton?
