Hi Michelle, I did the family trip several years ago. We rented a big van but It wasn't too comfortable for driving on Irish lanes. SCARRY. Two cars would be nice to give the opportunity to go in more than one direction and not always have to be together. And if you do that, be sure to think about the number of people and suitcases in making a decision about what size you need. Cabs are not always easy to find. Know before you go if it is a potential problem in areas of interest. I looked on the net for self catering and found it a good place to find what I was looking for. We even rented a 700 year old renovated castle in Galway for a week at a very good price for ten of us. It proved a very good base. And we saved some money doing our own shopping and cooking some of the time. But still ate out a lot. On other trips we have found a place to stay on a daily basis but when traveling with kids and so many of us it was good not to have to do that. Also with so many more folks wanting to be in Ireland from all over Europe as well as the US and Australia it is not as easy to find a last minute B&B. Self catering places usually have a non flexible schedule as to when their week begins and ends so plan accordingly. Prices are also not what they used to be. :>( I prefer autumn travel in Ireland. It is less crowded and rates are usually less and you still have good daylight hours. However the Island is quieting down and there are fewer festivals and musical events etc. And fewer of us who don't know how to drive on the road. Enjoy your trip and the planning before hand. I am very appreciative of all the information in the responses. Well this is what we are thinking at this time: it might work best to rent a cottage for a week or 2 at a time. Shouldn't that save money compared to staying in one room in a hotel every night??? That is how it is here in the eastern US. Please let me know about that one! your suggestions are very welcome. Our main goal to to check out county Donegal and Tipperary town in Co. Tipperary. >From what we have been told so far - it looks like the first night will probably be spent in Dublin. Yes, I will be traveling from the US. We are trying to make it a family reunion - with one of my daughters & her children who lives on the West coast. We should know with in the month if we will be able to make this trip. Planning, getting all the details and costs are more stressful than the trips! Also - is it more expensive to get 2 taxis or rent 2 cars??
