Thanks everyone for trying- that's really nice. It just seems strange that on an official register such as a marriage record it seems to be stated so clearly that his residence at the time of marriage is Hilhead and it states Parish of Convoy. Makes me think that it must be the name of something other than a townland. Surely the person recording this must have known what towns where in the parish. I also had found a couple of other Hilhead/ Hillheads, but not nearby. Fil in Australia Desperately seeking McDevitt, Kennedy, Cassidy. _____ From: PeteScherm@aol.com [mailto:PeteScherm@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, 27 March 2008 5:50 AM To: filvan@optusnet.com.au Subject: Hilhead/ McDevitt Filomena, == He married in Convoy and lived at Castletorris, one of the townlands [snip] "Hilhead Parish of Convoy". I cannot find a Hilhead in or near Convoy. Can anyone help me? == Castletorrison townland is at the northern edge of Convoy civil parish, and is a bit less than 3 miles NNW of Convoy town itself. I have no idea about Liam's finding a Castletorris on Google Maps. I don't have broadband, so can't access them. But I know from other sources that they are nowhere near being foolproof. And, of course there is no townland of Castletorris (and the village in Castletorrison townland is called, not surprisingly, Castletorrison). I searched the townland of Castletorrison on the six-inch scale maps of Donegal from the Donegal Library - http://www.donegallibrary.ie/ - and click on the Old Maps link. No Hilhead or Hill Head in the townland or near it (but I didn't spend a lot of time at this - the navigation on the computer is slow). There are a couple of Hill Heads which Google found for me. None are in or near Convoy parish. There is one just across the border a mile into Tyrone, near Clady and Castlefinn towns. Some real estate ads which Google found, locate a Hill Head at the eastern edge of Ardara town.....but again, no where near Convoy parish. A few hours browsing the Donegal six-inch maps might yield a Hilhead/Hill Head but, as the maps are indexed by townland, you'd have to start with Castletorrison and just "spread out" from there. As you asked, Hilhead might also be the name of a manor/estate house. The Townland Index maps (which I have) often indicate the names of such buildings, but there's nothing shown in the Castletorrison area. If I come across something, I'll drop you a line.
