    1. [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] Information on Death and Marriage Certificates
    2. Maureen Doyle
    3. Hi everyone, I just have a couple of quick queries, the first is can anybody tell me exactly what information is contained in the death and marriage certificates from the Letterkenny Registry pertaining to death certificates from 1864 till 1940's and marriage certificates for the same time especially in the Gweedore areas. I am just wondering if it is worth my while to try and purchase these certificates. Also I have been able to look through the Griffith Valuations for Dunfanaghy from 1850's till 1920's at the Family History Library, but was dismayed to find that the pages have no dates on them, and whilst I was hoping to be able to pin down a death date for my Madgy McCole by when she was crossed off the GV book and handed on to her son in law, I found the page but it had no identifying year. Has anybody got any tips on how to decipher the information on these films. Best regards Maureen

    3. Hi Maureen I have got a couple of certificates from Letterkenny. I have an 1862 Presbyterian Marriage certificate that gives the details up the top of parish, year, County. Then it (starting from the left) lists entry no, When married, Name and Surname of both parties, Age, Conjugal condition, Rank or profession, Residence at time of marriage, Fathers name and surname, Rank or profession of father. Then at the bottom it has the place of marriage, celebrant and names of married couple and names of witnesses. I have an 1883 Death certificate. It has the Superintendent Registrar's district at the top, union and County. Then it has (left to right) entry no, Date and place of death, Name and surname of deceased, Sex, conjugal condition, Age last birthday, Rank, profession or occupation, certified cause of death and length of illness, Signature qualification and residence of informant, when registered and signature of registrar. I have death certificates also from 1877 and 1902 that have the same line up. These were all obtained from Letterkenny and are events in the Convoy area. Hope this helps. 3. Hi Filomena, many thanks for that, I guess the marriage certificate is more the one to go for, I had hoped that the death certs would have details of the parents or at least the father. I have paid for searches for marriages for a couple of my ancestors, but just have never had luck in finding them. I suppose prior to 1864 the certificates didnt survive. 1. Re: [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] Information on Death and Marriage Certificates and the GVRBs
    2. Maureen, Some comments on the Griffiths Valuation Revision Books, for this is what you are referring to rather than the Griffiths Valuation itself: Each book covers 10 to 15 years so you have a rough idea of what dates are covered by any book. Check the books just before and just after the one where Madgy McCole is crossed out, and you may find dates which will bracket her. HOWEVER, if someone IS scored out, I have never seen that revision NOT identified by a date. Did you check the FACING page because the dates are way way over on the right hand margin of the right hand page. Sometimes there are several revisions (scorings out) and several dates on one line of one page and it is difficult to identify which date refers to which revision. The revisions were originally made in colour and the date was in the same colour and if you see them in PRONI or in Dublin, you will have no trouble deciding which is which, but in black and white on a FHC microfilm, it is much harder! However, it is still possible to tell which revision belongs to which date by comparing the size of the writing, the width of the nib, the weight of the script, etc. If you still have the film at your FHC, take a digipic of the whole page and send it to me and I will see what I can do with it. If you do find a date for the revision, beware assuming that Madgy died in that year. I have seen people alive 10 years after they were scored from the GVRBs - they had moved in with a daughter. And I have also seen someone still recorded in the GVRBs 20 years after he was dead!! Some evaluators must have been very unobservant! Nevertheless, more often than not, a disappearance from the GVRBs can give some indication of death in an older person.
