This is a partial repeat of my post to the Donegal Lists on the 18 April 2008, it is in the archives of the three prime Donegal Lists. The email message below was in response to a message I sent requesting some information regarding the GV site on www.askaboutireland. website. It turns out iaw their response the site was not for us mortals to use at this time, it was a BETA site for testing which we were not suppose to find................ Problem with any site not password protected is it will always be found and accessed at some point in time........................................ They do state: "We do expect the service to be fully up and running and publicly available shortly. " My opinion is that they have shut it down to web traffic in order to adjust and modify their new program. I would do the same if it were me controlling the process. If you go to the main site you will see a notice that the site is being worked on --Apache HTTP Server maintenance. Now the question is when will come back on line for us mortals. Below is a reply received from the Managers of the GV data site on my observations regarding the slow operation of the images recovery portion. I have removed the names of those involved for security reason. Bob Cdn ------------------------------------------------------- Dear Bob, Thank you very much for your email to my colleague ........ The Griffith's Valuation service is actually still in prototype and test stage at the moment and not officially launched as yet. There are elements which are being reviewed, tweaked and tested still. The images are not functioning in the way in which they will do once the service is publicly live, but it will work properly on Vista and other operating systems then. We have recently made a link available on the www.askaboutireland.ie website but really intended it to be accessed only by the local studies librarians of the Irish public library authorities who are testing the service. We thought we had it buried well enough not to be found generally! We do expect the service to be fully up and running and publicly available shortly. Jackie - this may not be what you are looking for, I'm not familiar with the geography of the places named. Here are the details for a batch of 5 films offered for rental if you order them into a Family History Center. It suggests you may need to view Letterkenny but I'm not really sure. Anyone understand what is indicated for the correct film for the St. Eunan's church records ? Rental of a film here in the US is $5.50 per 5 week rental period. Write if either of the 2 films noted as being permanently held at the local FHC will assist your search. Anyone interested in getting funding for a N. Ireland Genealogy event should get their application in before 2 May 2008. Funding under the Events Growth Fund (EGF) aims to assist events to develop or grow into a Major or International event. Funding under the Major Events Fund (MEF) is to assist large events that will attract significant out of state media coverage. The maximum amount available under the Events Growth Fund for each event is £30,000. See the URL http://www.dcalni.gov.uk/index/events_unit/grant_funding_programme_2008.htm Funding news - 18/04/2008 Northern Ireland Events Fund Now Available The Garden Show Ireland was launched in Hillsborough Castle this week, with funding from the Major Events Fund. The Major Events Fund was launched earlier this month and the Arts and Culture Minister Edwin Poots MLA believes Northern Ireland's international reputation is blossoming through a range of world-class events staged in the country thanks to the fund. He said: "Events of this type are vitally important to the Northern Ireland economy and tourism and offer opportunities to showcase the very best Northern Ireland can offer to the rest of the world." The Minister launched the programme, worth a total of £1.6million, to support both large and small events. Explaining the aim of the funding programme, the Mr Poots said: "The Major Events Fund is aimed at big events which will attract tourists, investors, international media coverage and will have a major economic impact on Northern Ireland. "Events which have qualified for this type of funding in the past year include, Rally Ireland at Stormont, the Walker Cup Golf Championship at Royal County Down in Newcastle and the FIM Motorcycle Championships, in Bangor. "The Events Growth Fund supports events which will grow and impact on local communities, helping to build confidence and pride, as well as attracting visitors. The aim is to support events which start small and have the potential to grow to a point where they are self-sustaining. "The Garden Show Ireland is an excellent example of a top quality event which has grown each year, attracting around 30,000 visitors to the Hillsborough area and generating in the region of £1million for the local economy. I would like to see more events like this, organised and run by local people and attracting an international audience." He added: "The Funds provide an opportunity too good to miss and I want to remind organisers that they need to submit their applications by 2 May if they are to be in with a chance of being considered for funding at this time." Take a look at their website (http://www.donegalancestry.com/) and that may explain why they did not answer. Can someone tell me the name of the school children would have attended in the Ballyhoorisly area in the 1860-1870s? Thanks, Michelle
I tried the site and got a map. Unfortunately it was the wrong area. I was expecting the Buncrana area but ended up with a map a few miles inland although the description of where the farm was located was correct. I ALWAYS DO THAT!! Sorry - got a bit excited!! Here's the address - http://staging.askaboutireland.ie:8080/gv4/gv_intro.php Happy days - again!! Lindel Donegal Genealogy Resources http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/
Just got an email from the Donegal County Library! This is the BEST news I've had for a long time - Ask About Ireland is hosting a pilot project, which is in the first phase of the Cultural Heritage Project - the complete, online, FREE, searchable Griffith's Valuation (1857 for us after Donegal) which includes the OS maps, marked with the Griffith's Valuation refs! Its a wee bit slow to load at this stage, but will improve, so be patient. I tested it with my ancestors name and townland - got a scan of the original Griffith's Valuation page and then clicked on the icon for the OS map and up it came! Nowhere else is or has this information been available, for free, online and, unlike the commercially available Griffith's Valuation cds or some online sites which purport to have the full Griffith's, this DOES .................. for instance, there's more than one person in Stranorlar, unlike those other resources/sites! Happy days!! Lindel Donegal Genealogy Resources http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/
