Hi Tonya, I don't have any Margaret Lawler in my tree - in fact I haven't been able to trace that far back yet on my Father's side. My Lawler roots come from Counties Kildare and Laois, where I believe the main concentration of Lawlers, Lawlors, or Lalors originated. Perhaps this will help you narrow your search for Margaret a little. However, without knowing at least a County, Townland or Parish your task will be well nigh impossible. Have you tried searching the Canadian records first ? Passenger lists etc may point you to a more specific origin for the Brennan family ? I'm sorry I can't be of more help, Regards, John > Date: Mon, 9 Jun 2008 13:09:10 -0400 > From: tonlebo@verizon.net > To: irl-co-donegal@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] Google Genealogy > > DO YOU HAVE A MARGARET LAWLER MARRIED TO THOMAS BRENNAN ABOUT 1810 > GIVE OR TAKE? Hi Liam, I absolutely agree that Google Earth is a fantastic piece of software. I've enjoyed it for many months now and thank you for pointing out the recent additions of brilliantly detailed images of Donegal, Derry etc. Let's hope they will succeed in completing the full mosaic of the island in due course ! I hope my reply to the question asking if Donegal Town and Donegal City were the same didn't appear dismissive or brusque - not my intention at all. I have to agree in light of your Google results that confusion abounds about the status of Donegal Town/City. I suppose I should have qualified my reply to the earlier query by saying that certainly in Donegal, or indeed Ireland, it is never referred to as a city. It was always referred to locally as Donegal Town. There are no cities currently in County Donegal - at least to my knowledge. Letterkenny Town Council recently however passed a motion to explore the possibility of gaining City status in the future. I contend that the "uphill struggle of educating....re Donegal conurbations" is in no way made easier by the proliferation of 1.7m inaccurate references on the web to "Donegal City". All of the websites you mention contain excellent examples of such inaccuracies, but my favourite has to be a certain florist "based within Donegal who has daily deliveries locally to Artane, Killester, Beaumont, Fairview and Whitehall and throughout the greater Donegal Area." All 5 areas named are suburbs of Dublin, 160 miles away! The openness of the web, the automated methodologies of search engines and design of data-entry web forms all contribute to such confusion. My apologies to all for drifting somewhat from our genealogical theme, but I suppose there is a moral for us all in this - that the worldwide web is a wonderful tool for us in our research, but should always be treated with a wee bit of healthy suspicion! Dear John Re: "Donegal Town is never referred to as a city." Confusion about the status of the Donegal metropolis appears to abound throughout the internet. The URL http://www.irelandscape.com/display_location.php?location_id=380 speaks of Donegal City Centre One can have an Aerlingus break in Donegal City at URL http://www.aerlingusvacationstore.com/vacations/ireland-city-donegal There is Donegal City at http://www.euroave.com/index_ave.php?gocountry=ireland&gocity=donegal The URL http://www.donegalflorist.com/ promises to deliver flowers to Donegal City The term - Donegal town Ireland - returns 127,000 hits on Google but the term - Donegal city Ireland- returns 1,700,000 hits. I cannot dispute your claim regarding Donegal town/City, never having been to the place but I can say that in County Antrim we have a more fluid attitude towards metropolitan nomenclature - my home town, Ballymena, is referred to as the City of the Seven Towers (and that's stretching it a bit). They even refer to Belfast as a city. The task of educating the uninformed about the status of Donegal conurbations will be an uphill struggle seing as you disparagingly refer to even your largest, Letterkenny, as a town as well. Don't you have any cities in the County at all? I hope you enjoyed the Google Earth maps of Donegal? Donegal Town is never referred to as a city. The population of the town in 2006 was only 2339, and Donegal is the 5th largest town in County Donegal - Letterkenny being the largest with a 2006 population of 17,586. Google Earth 4.3 at the URL http://earth.google.com/ now provides astonishing closeups of parts of Ireland. Derry City and aspects of the adjoining County Donegal are included as is Donegal City, Coleraine, Ballycastle and Belfast together with all the other major towns and cities of Ireland. Unfortunately, really important places, like Ballymena and St Johnston are not yet included. I can now clearly see the field farmed by my great grandfather William McSheffrey in the 1850s, North East of Birdstown Demesne (OS Map 1:50,000), 55 Deg.04'23.83N and 7Deg.21'21.87 W. The Times newspaper reports that a new online archive in Ancestry.co.uk will allow people to trace whether their forebears were among the British and Irish settlers who moved to Australia in the 19th and early 20th centuries in search of a better life. The collection enables the public to search 8.9 million names of passengers and crew, three million of whom were free settlers, who arrived in New South Wales between 1826 and 1922. The Australian Free Settler Collection numbers more than 2.2 million British names. Also included are other travellers and crew who journeyed to Australia over almost a century. The Association of Professional Genealogists in Ireland (APGI) welcomed the 27 May 2008 announcement from the National Library of Ireland that they are once again to allow public access to their microfilm copies of Roman Catholic parish registers from the dioceses of Cashel & Emly, Cloyne and Kerry. The National Library's collection of microfilms covers the surviving pre-1881 baptismal and marriage records of almost all Roman Catholic parishes throughout Ireland. In 1994 the National Library was supplied with a legal opinion by Muireann O Briain, S.C., which dismissed the notion of copyright in a manuscript which were created for the purpose of maintaining records and which was not 'the work of one person or of joint authorship'. Ms. O Briain further stated that even if copyright were upheld, anyone using microfilm copies of the registers for research purposes would not be infringing any such copyright. There should now be no restrictions on viewing any RC church records in either NLI or from the LDS.
