I just read the the Early family are descendants of Jeremiah Early, who came from the county of Donegal, Ireland and settled in what is now Madison County, Virginia, early in the 18th century. I hope this helps someone. (It was in the Bulletin of the New York Public Library) Janice Friel **************Psssst...Have you heard the news? Hi Bob, The weather here is beautiful!! No, not joking, it's hard to believe but seriously, yesterday and today have been warm and sunny and I am off for a spot of graveyard tramping now in a few minutes. I wonder where you booked up to stay in the end. Please make sure you pop in and see me if you are passing through East Donegal. I would love to meet you and have a chat about all things genealogy - and maybe enjoy a wee pint o' the black stuff! Hi Joe, Haugh, usually called Haw now, is in the parish of Taughboyne, a mile or so from Monreagh. See map at this link: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bhilchey/MTaughboyne.html The other townland is Imlick. Imlick is a townland in the neighbouring parish of Killea: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bhilchey/MKillea.html It is less than 2 miles from Haw, so well within courting distance!! There is no resident minister at Monreagh now, in fact the manse there is at the moment being converted into an international study centre for Scots Irish Presbyterian links and will be open later this year: http://news.ulster.ac.uk/releases/2005/1948.html The minister who covers Monreagh is the Reverend Dr David Latimer, minister of 1st Londonderry Presbyterian church but the last I heard, he was serving as a chaplain with the Royal Irish Rangers in Iraq. Furthermore, I would strongly advise you that these ministers are overworked and underpaid and are never too keen to do these look-ups - even if you send them a donation (about 20 euros). Finally, may I suggest that as a way forward, you have a look at the wee booklet on Lindel's webiste which I wrote to help people starting out on genealogy in Donegal: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/genbooklet.pdf Regards, Boyd. -----Original Message----- From: donegaleire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:donegaleire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of JFHcoop1@cs.com Sent: 03 September 2008 04:01 To: irl-donegal@rootsweb.com; donegaleire@rootsweb.com; irl-co-donegal@rootsweb.com Subject: [DONEGALEIRE] Question on 1878 marriage in Monreagh, County Donegal Hello to all on the list, I have a copy of a marriage cert. between Andrew HUNTER and Rebecca LONG at Monreagh Presbyterian Church on 11/14/1878. Andrew's residence is listed as Haugh, Rebecca's appears to be "Inlick", as best I can tell. Would anyone out there with knowledge of the area around that time be willing to permit me to email a copy of the cert to get their opinion? Also, would the Monreagh Church be the place to write for records on this family? SNIP
Joe, == I have a copy of a marriage cert. between Andrew HUNTER and Rebecca LONG at Monreagh Presbyterian Church on 11/14/1878. Andrew's residence is listed as Haugh, Rebecca's appears to be "Inlick", as best I can tell. == Firstly, I suspect that the Haugh location is actually Haw. There is a Haugh townland in Co. Donegal, but it is located about a mile north of Donegal town, and nowhere near Monreagh. The townland of Haw is where the village of Church Town is located, and Monreagh townland is immediately east of Haw with nearly a mile-long common border between them. The Monreagh Presbyterian church is actually in Tonagh townland - the next townland to the east. I suspect that "Inlick" is actually the townland of Imlick, which is also nearby.......just a mile or a mile and a half to the NE of Monreagh townland and the Presbyterian Congregation. So, all of these places are within 2 miles of each other, at most. If you have any other questions on the geography of these townlands, drop me a line. == Also, would the Monreagh Church be the place to write for records on this family? == I don't do any genealogy, so I'll have to leave that response to other listers. Greetings I am extremely interested in knowing if anyone on this list has an understanding or connection to any of the following…. Reportedly these family members all came from County Donegal near Strabane. Reportedly – Charles McLaughlin (pure guess ~1780) and Nancy Hart (daughter of Robert Hart and Anna Todd) of Donegal had at least one son – John Hart McLaughlin and two daughters – Mary and Margaret. John Hart McLaughlin (pure guess ~1800?) married Jane (Margaret) Wilson (daughter of John Wilson and Isabelle Keys and they had five children. - John McLaughlin – born in April 1824 in County Donegal Ireland. - William McLaughlin – born in April 1832 in County Donegal Ireland - Isabelle McLaughlin -- unknown - Margaret McLaughlin – unknown - Jane McLaughlin – unknown John McLaughlin and William McLaughlin immigrated to the US. John arrived in Philadelphia from Londonderry on July 5 1846 aboard the Bark Fanny. It is unknown when William immigrated. John McLaughlin married Catherine Ferguson in Philadelphia, PA on December 21 1847. Happy and pleased to receive any and all information…. Grant McLaughlin Arlington Virginia
Hello, Try www.seanruad.com Put St in the Townland box. Alter the Search Method to At BEGINNING of Field and put Donegal in the County box. Press submit. You will get a couple of dozen townlands with the best possibles looking like: Stranagoppoge or Stroangibbagh. Rob Doragh Liverpool UK In a message dated 8/28/2008 10:17:40 A.M. I cannot help you but you might find the following list of Donegal placenames a useful tool. _http://www.donegalcoco.ie/donegalplacesnames.htm_ (http://www.donegalcoco.ie/donegalplacesnames.htm) then click this list in the first paragraph which will take you to a 5 page list of Donegal placenames with Irish translation. It is a good resource and is growing I believe over time. Judy In a message dated 8/28/2008 10:17:40 A.M. Michael McGrorty dies at age of 101 years Michael McGrorty, aged 101 years, perhaps the only centenarian in Clarion county, died at 4:30 o'clock Friday morning, April 16, 1926 at the home of his son Stephen McGrorty, of Route 2, New Bethlehem. Deceased was born in 1825 in the county of Donegal, Ireland, and was ason of Stephen and Mary (Fairy) McGrorty. For many years he was a familiar figure on the streets of New Bethlehem where he was well and favorably known. During the active days of the now deserted village of Starburg, Mr. McGrorty resided there and worked at coal mining. Mr. McGrorty, wife and three sons Patrick, Charlie, and Michael, came to America in 1888. His sons James and Stephen came a year earlier. Mr. McGrorty's Irish friends discouraged his coming to America as he was in ill health and they feared he would not live out the year. He arrived in New Bethlehem during the 4th of July celebration of 1888. His wife, who was Anna Downing, died 19 years ago. Surviving are the following children, namely: Stephen, of New Bethlehem; Patrick, of Pittsburgh; Michael, of Kaylor; Charlie, of Pittsburgh. Five children are dead, four of them being buried in Ireland. Funeral services were held at 9:30 o'clock Monday morning in St. Charles Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Francis Graves officiating. Interment, directed by Charles White, was in St. Charles cemetery. Thought I'd share it - might hslp someone Michelle
