I agree with this as my GGGG Grandmother Margaret McDonald was tried and convicted at Glasgow under this, her maiden name in 1812,despite her husband John Waddell being convicted of the same crimes. She appears as Margaret McDonald on the convict shipping list although it was noted she was ux John Waddell. Fellow Listers, I just got back to the computer. First off - I want to Thank all of the Fellow Listers who were so very helpful - sending great information for taking a trip to Ireland. Especially with children. Sadly, our trip has been put on Hold. It turns out that 2 of us need surgery. So for now the Dream trip will remail something wonderful to look forward too. I will keep all the e-mails with the information about the cottages and cars & such that were sent off list. It is information like that , you just can't find on tourist sites. Thanks again. Sincerely, Michelle
Thank you both for your input, that's another thing I didn't know. Hi All; This is from another list to which I belong; I thought it would be helpful to some in their searches. Good luck, Nova B. Ontario, Canada [Another good one from Pam, in Indiana. Thanks, Pam. Sally] Genealogy: To help your research, here are 10 things you may not know about women’s maiden names This week’s column could be called “the top ten things you don't know about women’s maiden names.” These are taken from The Hidden Half of the Family: A Sourcebook for Women’s Genealogy by Christina Kassabian Schaefer, published by the Genealogical Publishing Company. 1. French women often used their maiden names on official records and legal documents. 2. Married women from Scandinavian countries customarily kept their maiden names, but should also be looked for under their husband’s surname. 3. In the American colonial period, Dutch marriage contracts allowed women to preserve their maiden names and their individual legal status. But, after 1690the Dutch colonists began adopting the English tradition of using the husband’s surname. 4. In Europe, German and Polish Catholic women’s deaths were recorded using only their maiden names not their married names. 5. Spanish surnames are often dual names taken from the paternal name combined with the maternal name. Married Hispanic women always used their maiden names on legal documents. In other records, they should be searched for under both their maiden name and their husband’s legal name. The word “de” (for “spouse of”) may precede their husband’s surname when added to their own. 6. Italian women used their maiden names on legal documents and in official records. 7. Jewish family names ending with -s or -es are matronymic-derived from the name of a mother or wife. 8. Quaker women often used their maiden name as a middle name after marriage 9. Scottish widows went back to using their maiden names after the death of their husbands. 10. In parts of Wales, up to present times, it was a custom for some women to retain their maiden names after marriage. Using this information when looking for female ancestors can assist family researchers in finding the “hidden half” of their families. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Here is the email I received about the primary school information. I hope this helps someone in their research. If I am able to get any records for the schools that my relatives went to, I will post them on Lindel and Bob's sites. Janice Friel Further to your e-mails below, the school records for Donegal held by the National Archives do not include those schools listed in your letter. Records of schools are actually the property of the boards of management of the schools and, unless deposited with an archives, can remain in the custody of the school. The records of schools in Donegal received as donations to the National Archives by the Department of Education and Science are to be found on our website at _http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/Nat_Schools/ns.html_ (http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/Nat_Schools/ns.html) while those received directly from the schools are to be found at _http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/Nat_Schools/schools.html_ (http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/Nat_Schools/schools.html) . If the schools in which you are interested cannot be found in these lists, I suggest that you contact either the Donegal County Archives, which also collects national school records (contact details on website at _http://www.donegalcoco.ie/services/communityculturalenterprise/Archives+Service/archivescollect ion.htm_ (http://www.donegalcoco.ie/services/communityculturalenterprise/Archives+Service/archivescollection.htm) ) or the schools concerned, if they still exist. I have a comprehensive list of school rollbooks and registers for Donegal online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/school.htm Listed are what I have online as well as the schools hels at the County Archives Lifford, National Archives Dublin and those on LDS microfilm (the last two with references) I was at the County Archives in Lifford in June/July this year - its a small office with three staff - not all registers/records are held on site, so you have to book ahead and let them know what you are interested in, so they can have them there for you (takes a day or two sometimes to get them to the Archives) The books are as they were deposited and some I saw weren't in the best condition, but there is not the money or resources at this time to microfilm them - they are well looked after though and will not get any worse than they are. You need to go to the Archives yourself and view the registers - there's no staff to copy anything as large as a register for you. An alternative is to pay a researcher to go and do that for you............or if you know someone in Donegal, send them along in your stead. What they need is people who are interested in the schools to do what I do - film or record in some way, the content of the registers, then submit a copy to them for their records. On my visit I photographed the pages of a number of registers (with my helpful side-kick Connie and not so helpful son Liam, dozing at the table or popping bubble wrap the staff had given him). Now I'm home, I will be putting the images onto cd for them and including an index for each of the pupils in the rollbook/register with page numbers. That way at least, the old registers won't have to be handled too much............I cringed when handling one - the spine creaked and cracked as I turned the pages!! Hope that helps! All the best, Lindel Donegal Genealogy Resources - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/
