It is usually impossible to track just a name in Ireland but if he recorded in the 1847-1864 Griffiths Valuation you may stand a chance. You did not mention if/when he left Ireland or what religion he was The Griffiths valuation has now appeared online in a searchable format at the URL www.otherdays.com. This has opened the field up a lot to a structured computer based search strategy using Civil and RC Parish maps on URL http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/sitemap.htm, modern OS maps available on http://www.multimap.com and the old Griffith's Valuation maps available from the www.otherdays.com site. You can buy the relevant sheet of the "The Discovery Series" map from www.elstead.co.uk (very useful) It is possible to use the Otherdays Griffiths for 72 hours on payment of an $8 fee and carry out a search for a person without prior knowledge of the townland, Parish or Barony - just the County. It is also possible to specify a search using variations of the persons name. Enter Burns and a search will be carried out for Burn, Byrne and Burns. The otherdays site also lets you printout copies of the original Griffiths documents. You can search for Andrew Cunningham county by county provided he owned land, or (more likely) rented land. During the Griffiths period he would have been 22-39 (presuming he continued to live there) Having found AC in the Griffith you should also be able to track the residual Irish Cunninghams or their descendants via the 1901 and 1911 census. Let me know how you got on! Dear Tammy Visiting Inch Island and talking to the Parish Priest may be a great experience for you but of little use Genealogically. Why thank-you Liam, I do not research in the eastern part of canada and did not know about the Archives in Newfoundland. That just made my calling list today. I have my family in the 1901 & 1911 census already. Hi Liam, It is the same old thing for me but I guess it may have been awhile since I posted. I am looking for My McGinley & Galla(g)her family. John McGinley (born abt 1858) son of Hugh married Mary Ann Galla(g)her daughter of John in 1884. they live at Castlequarter on Inch Island. Their children are: Annie (1885), John, (1887), Hugh (1888), David (1890), Ellen or Nellie (1894), Charles (May 1895) Catherine or Katie( 1899) and then my greatgran Elizabeth (Lizzie) born somewhere between 1893 -1896. She has lied about her age and we have just started figuring it out. Lizzie came to Canada but the rest stayed behind. My trip over is very meaning full for me to be the first in my family to return and walk the land my greatgrandparents left behind 100 years ago for Canada. I had hoped to have a chance to talk with the priest that wrote to my aunt. My experience with Catholic church records in Canada is that usually their is more information in them then I can find in a cert. A marriage has both parents listed (including mother with maiden name). The baptism usually has a birth date. And I had hoped to find these before I went looking of the certs. The ages I have are from the census and may not be exact. I don't have alot of research time in Ireland for this line of my family and most of my stay will be in the south, but I get 2 days to visit Inch Island and area. I am hoping to stumble over a gravestone or something while there. I am not the one booking the place but I will send a letter to ones who are right away and I will let them know about your cousin's place. Any idea of what the charge would be to have the church records checked by either place? I have updated the various Irish book lists on my website with more than 100 more books, many with lookup volunteers. They include Parish History, Local History, General Irish History, Genealogy, Mythology, Forklore and many other types of books. If you submitted a book last month, please check your entry for accuracy. If you are a Lookup Volunteer and your email address has changed, please let me know. I was amazed at the generosity of the many Irish list readers who not only took the time to submit a book but also volunteered to do lookups. Thanks to all of you. If you find a book you would like to buy, on the Ireland Books Discussion Mailing List webpage, there are many Irish bookstores linked. Also, a new link is to Emigrant-On-Line where you can find over 1000 Irish book reviews. You can access the webpages at the URL below my name. At my home page, at the top, under Ireland there is a drop down menu, click on Ireland Books. This will take you to the Ireland Books Discussion Mailing List webpage, near the bottom under, 'Previous Posts', you will find links to the Ireland Book List which include all but the Parish History Books. Their links are a bit under the Ireland Book List link. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Professional Genealogy Research All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by Norton 2002

This sort of goes with the earlier message I posted. I am in need of someone who has local knowledge of Inch Island and surrounding area. I had someone last spring who was telling me all kinds of great things but she disappeared. Anyone who can tell me about the area I would love to hear from you. Tammy
Hi All, I am hoping that someone can help me with this. My Aunt wrote ( a couple years back) to Roman Catholic Rectory at Canaghan, Inch Island, Donegal. She got a reply back but the address was from Rev. Micheal Potter, Parochial House, Burt, Co. Donegal. She has since wrote back ( 8- 12 months ago) but no reply. It has been arranged that during my trip over we will go to Co. Donegal. I would like to find out how to get a hold of the right place that will have the church records for after 1880. The National Library only lists baptisms up to 1880. I am looking for 1884 to 1900. So does any one have a phone number or website that can get me somewhere? I have not had any luck tonight. I don't know if Rev. Micheal Potter is still there but I would like to be able to talk to someone. Tammy in Canada

Hello Connie, There were two Presbyterian Churches in Raphoe with records available as follows: Presbyterian. 1st Raphoe Baptisms, 1829-1982; marriages, 1829-96. Presbyterian. 2nd Raphoe Baptisms, 1860-1923; marriages, 1829-45 and 1860-1939. Just in passing, there were Stevenson families in both Donaghmore (Ballindrait) and Ramelton in the time period you are researching. There was another family who used the spelling "Stephenson" in Letterkenny. These are all in the Diocese of Raphoe. I hope that helps rather than confuses. regards RW www.ulsterancestry.com >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [DONEGAL] Church and Church Records >Date: Tue, 24 Feb 2004 13:22:48 EST > >Can anyone tell me if the following church is still in Rapahoe and how I >can >check on records, if available, from this church for the early 1800s. > >Rapahoe Presbyterian Ch., Donegal, Ireland > >I am research John Stevenson born August 18, 1802 Rapahoe, County of >Donegal, >Ireland married 1st Martha Allen abt. 1825 and 2nd Nancy Ann Eaton November >17, 1834. Can anyone tell me if the following church is still in Rapahoe and how I can check on records, if available, from this church for the early 1800s. Rapahoe Presbyterian Ch., Donegal, Ireland I am research John Stevenson born August 18, 1802 Rapahoe, County of Donegal, Ireland married 1st Martha Allen abt. 1825 and 2nd Nancy Ann Eaton November 17, 1834. According to a letter written in 1904 by a daughter of John's, Nancy and John were married in the Rapahoe Presbyterian Church. I would like to try and confirm this information and maybe find the names of Nancy Eaton's parents. Thanks for any help. Connie Cotterill Schumaker [email protected]
Hi Connie, The Raphoe PC records start in 1829. I also am researching STEVENSONS and so have a little on the family you are researching. A friend researched these church records for me for LOWRYS and was able to document STEVENSONS only through 1832. The Baptism records showed: John Stevenson Martha Allen Muntertiney d. Jane born 2 Dec 1830. I believe from looking at the Donfam site that other children may have been born in 1827(Jane), 1833(Margaret), 1834, and 1839(Mary). The Marriage records of Raphoe PC show a David Stevenson, son of John and Mary Ann Stevenson of the Established Church marrying Jane McConnell on 2 June 1831, daughter of Moses and Margaret McConnell of Raphoe PC. Witnesses were Moses McConnell and James Allen and ? Thompson. My Stevensons were probably on the Abercorn Estate which was largely the Parish of Taughboyne, north of the Parish of Raphoe. The records of the Abercorn Estate and its tenants are very good for the most part. Hope this helps. Dear Pete, you too!! I have emailed the source of the ball point pen, BUT feel for sure that my Ellen is the young woman who came to Australia on the Caribou in October 1859( this original info kindly given by R. G. Fairall, of Newcastle), from his help I find Ellen travelled with a sister and a brother and his wife.( Ellen was born in the 1840 and was in Australia to marry in 1863 and was the only llen Ferry to travel in that time frame..I am now trying to get hold of the full extract of details for Irish Orphans to Sydney, as there is a Bridget Ferry mentioned and Ellen's brother named his daughters, one Bridget and two Mary ( their deceased mother) and his son John, after him. All I need on Bridget Ferry is the name of the townland and her father and mothers name, ho, ho, ho - but I believe transcripts do exist with this info HELP----- Thank you all for all your help..., Beverley at Tannum Sands Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 23, 2004 3:06 AM Subject: Re: [DONEGAL] Sallemboough in Donegal in the early 1800's > Beverley at [email protected] writes: > > << the Sallemborough was a complete mistake, I believe..I now am SURE my dear > Ellen Ferry came from Dunfanaghy >> > > Beverley, > > I feel sure that "that" interpretation was beyond even my most ridiculous > proposals <gr>.
