    2. Barbara at [email protected] writes: > Would anyone on the list know where I could purchase a copy of the Ordnance Survey Memoirs for Co. Donegal, Vol 39? < Barbara, I have often encountered mention of the Ordnance Survey Memoirs in correspondence, and have always assumed that the "memoirs" is actually a reference to the Ordnance Survey Letters produced by John O'Donovan et al during their Survey work. Your vol. 39 causes me some concern, however. The general compilation of the OS letters was done by Rev. Michael O'Flanagan in Bray, Co. Wicklow, in 1928. Only 42 volumes were produced, and not all counties are represented. My listing for the books show vols. 38 and 39 cover Westmeath, whereas Donegal is complete in volume 7. I cannot give you specific information about the Donegal book, as I have not yet requested it through Interlibrary loan. But I have received several other county books, and except for one, they were all from the original Bray publications.....via Multigraph [I remember it well <gr>], single side of paper printing, with accompanying sketches and maps as line-drawings. All of these 42 volumes (covering 29 counties - Antrim, Tyrone and Cork were not published....at least, at that time) should be available through Interlibrary loan, although I've been waiting a few months for a couple of them. It would certainly help if you could request them through a library (or library system) which is a member of OCLC. As you have discovered, they are not "readily available". But they are wonderful reading. As a friend said, "They're a hoot !!!!". Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

    2. My great grandmother was Nancy (actually Anna) O'Donnell. She was from Inishfree Island but married Patrick Gallagher from Burtonport around 1875. Her sister Nora married Patrick's brother Charles, and they settled in Burtonport. The latter had a daughter Nora who maried a Frank O'Donnell, but I don't know of a James. Nancy also had a brother John O'Donnell who had a son Anthony, but I think he settled in Dungloe. My cousin got a lot of info about our family from a Jimmy Frank O'Donnell in Butonport in the 1950's, but he was in his 80's then. You know there's a Jimmy O'Donnell who runs O'Donnells Pub in Burtonport now. You might write to him. My other thought would be to write to Patrick Campbell, who grew up in the area and has researched and written several books (Memories of Dungloe, Death In Templecrone). I believe his e-mail is [email protected] Good luck! Maureen Los Angeles
