    3. Hi Maureen I have got a couple of certificates from Letterkenny. I have an 1862 Presbyterian Marriage certificate that gives the details up the top of parish, year, County. Then it (starting from the left) lists entry no, When married, Name and Surname of both parties, Age, Conjugal condition, Rank or profession, Residence at time of marriage, Fathers name and surname, Rank or profession of father. Then at the bottom it has the place of marriage, celebrant and names of married couple and names of witnesses. I have an 1883 Death certificate. It has the Superintendent Registrar's district at the top, union and County. Then it has (left to right) entry no, Date and place of death, Name and surname of deceased, Sex, conjugal condition, Age last birthday, Rank, profession or occupation, certified cause of death and length of illness, Signature qualification and residence of informant, when registered and signature of registrar. I have death certificates also from 1877 and 1902 that have the same line up. These were all obtained from Letterkenny and are events in the Convoy area. Hope this helps. I am just wondering if it is worth my while to try and purchase these certificates. Also I have been able to look through the Griffith Valuations for Dunfanaghy from 1850's till 1920's at the Family History Library, but was dismayed to find that the pages have no dates on them, and whilst I was hoping to be able to pin down a death date for my Madgy McCole by when she was crossed off the GV book and handed on to her son in law, I found the page but it had no identifying year. Has anybody got any tips on how to decipher the information on these films. 3. Hi Filomena, many thanks for that, I guess the marriage certificate is more the one to go for, I had hoped that the death certs would have details of the parents or at least the father. I have paid for searches for marriages for a couple of my ancestors, but just have never had luck in finding them. I suppose prior to 1864 the certificates didnt survive. 3. Hi Maureen, Civil registration for all events started in 1864. For non-Catholic marriages, civil registration started in 1845. Be aware that very few who were born in the early-mid 1800s knew their date of birth or age. If you go looking for a birth registration using age at death (given on a death registration) allow a generous error bound on the year of birth. All the registrations survive. 3. Hello Bob and Boyd! Just wanted to let you both know I appreciate your efforts to help me with the look ups and suggestions. Thanks for the welcome to the list also. I am hoping to verify the parents of George Boyd Allen soon, but have not had a reply from my contact to that query as yet. It does seem quite likely that George's parents could be Andrew and Sarah with Sarah possibly being Sarah Ann. The information for George's parents would have come from the death cert. His wife died before him, so it is possible the informant (a son) made an error. I will be away for the next week or - so if you don't hear from me, that is why. 2. Yes Paul, that is exactly what I mean. It is only open on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm, and also two mornings though I am not sure which ones (Monday and Thursday, I think), or the times, as I work and only ever use it in the evening. However, I do have Diane's number and could phone and ask her the days and times. Also, if you DO wish to use it, there are only two Microfilm readers and so you would need to book it. I would need to ask her which number you can do that on. Btw, it is an excellent resource with almost all the main records available for Derry, Donegal and Tyrone. I am currently writing a Genealogy Guide to Donegal for distribution to TICs, hotels, museums and libraries, so if you pick it up when you are here, you will know what is available. 1. Re: [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] ALLEN in Lifford
    2. Hi Judy, Well, you may be very lucky here since I live in Lifford, I am interested in all things Boyd and I do the odd bit of research for folks on these Lists. A quick look at my BIVRI discs shows the following: ALLEN, Birth Gender: Male Birth Date: 22 Oct 1867 Birthplace: 331, Castlefin, Don, Ire Recorded in: Donegal, Ireland Collection: Civil Registration Father: Andrew ALLEN Mother: Sarah BOYD Source: FHL Film 101156 Dates: 1867 - 1868 He must be a brother of your George Boyd Allen. The interesting bit is that he was registered in Castlefin which is the other direction from Legnabraid and Coolatee outside Lifford. Also, as it is 1867, I will be able to check this birth record in Derry FHC and see where exactly your folks came from and which church they attended thus opening up more avenues for research. Unfortunately a birth in 1857 is too early for Civil Records so we will not find George there. He may however be in church registers when we find out which church. Here is a baby girl probably born dead as well: ALLEN, Birth Gender: Female Birth Date: 29 Jun 1869 Birthplace: 339, Castlefin, Don, Ire Recorded in: Donegal, Ireland Collection: Civil Registration Father: Andrew ALLEN Mother: Sarah BOYD Source: FHL Film 101191 Dates: 1869 - 1870 It is not too early to find a marriage but there was none in my BIVRI discs. Have to rush off to work now but Will see what else I can find later. I am new to the List and helping my cousin to find her mother's family. From a birth cert of their child, George ALLEN in 1890 In Queensland Australia, it was stated that George Boyd ALLEN was born about 1857-60 at Lifford County Donegal. His parents were Andrew ALLEN and Annie BOYD. In 1886, he married Davidina MUNRO in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. By 1889, they had a child in Queensland, but I can't find their immigration to Australia as yet - so between 1886 -1889. Is anyone able to check for the baptism or birth for George Boyd ALLEN around 1857- 1860 in Lifford please. Griffiths Valuations showed: Allen Andrew Legnabraid or Cunninghams Town Clonleigh Donegal Allen Rep. Anne Town of Lifford Clonleigh Donegal Blacksmiths Registered in Donegal Ireland 1833 - 43 Andrew Allen at Collatee Don't know if this is significant, but would love to hear from anyone who is related or can help to find more details about the family.
