    1. Re: [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] Headrights from Orange Co, etc
    2. Carolyn That is all they had for Orange Co., Va. online. Headright's were 50 acres of land given to the transporter for each person they transported. This system was pretty corrupt and these person would do anything to get the 50 acres. Sometimes they would even transport someone from one state to another just to get the acres when they were only suppose to receive the 50 acres if someone was transport from England or another country to America. Anyway, a lot of the records are good and I was able to find one of my relatives records in the headright lists. I'm sure you could search any state and see their headright list. Just search headright's Georgia or Philadelphia, etc. Good luck Janice Friel In a message dated 4/4/2008 11:31:41 A.M. 1. [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] Headrights from Orange Co., Va. from Ireland
    2. Thought this may help someone. Janice Headrights were grants of 50 acres of land per "head" - or per white male over the age of 16 who transported himself to the colonies. They appear in the Court of Common Pleas in the county in which the land was granted. The attached file includes the headrights copied from the Orange Co., Va Court of Common Pleas in the 18th Century. These headrights function as the only real immigration record for English, Scot or Irish immigrants in that time period. The headright identifies the country of origin and generally the port of entry in the colonies. 17 Feb 1735 John Read John Bourke William Nicholls Oliver Small Richard Warfin George Humphreys William Johnson John McKenery William Kelly Thos. 1. [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] fatherless children Raphoe 1920'30's Confirmation records?
    2. Jackie
    3. Is anyone able to throw any light on this strange one? St Eunan's RC Church Raphoe records reveal my father was Confirmed 1934, the names of 14 other children are on the same page, none of these children's details are recorded, there's not any date of births, or names of sponsors etc. All other pages listing other children's Confirmation give such details. The church secretary says that this is most unusual, she has never come across it before and cannot offer any explanation. I know that my father did not grown up with his unmarried birth mother, it's presumed he grew up with his grandfather or a close relative or family friend in Raphoe. We've thought about the possibilities and as we've no idea where he was born, we've thought that possibly as the War was approaching, children were being evacuated to Raphoe but it does seem a little early. The other possibility which seems more likely is that my father was in an orphanage and with other children of the same age, all were baptised together but as yet we cannot find anything re an orphanage in Raphoe. We have never been able to obtain a birth certificate for my father or a baptism certificate, he does not appear to have been registered at all. Cannot anyone help? The McElhinney family owned the William Street music shop and were also Carters in Raphoe at that time but both families ceased trading and left Raphoe in 1939 thought to have gone straight to England. 3. Thanks everyone for trying- that's really nice. It just seems strange that on an official register such as a marriage record it seems to be stated so clearly that his residence at the time of marriage is Hilhead and it states Parish of Convoy. Makes me think that it must be the name of something other than a townland. Surely the person recording this must have known what towns where in the parish. I also had found a couple of other Hilhead/ Hillheads, but not nearby. Fil in Australia Desperately seeking McDevitt, Kennedy, Cassidy. _____ From: PeteScherm@aol.com [mailto:PeteScherm@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, 27 March 2008 5:50 AM To: filvan@optusnet.com.au Subject: Hilhead/ McDevitt Filomena, == He married in Convoy and lived at Castletorris, one of the townlands [snip] "Hilhead Parish of Convoy". I cannot find a Hilhead in or near Convoy. Can anyone help me? == Castletorrison townland is at the northern edge of Convoy civil parish, and is a bit less than 3 miles NNW of Convoy town itself. I have no idea about Liam's finding a Castletorris on Google Maps. I don't have broadband, so can't access them. But I know from other sources that they are nowhere near being foolproof. And, of course there is no townland of Castletorris (and the village in Castletorrison townland is called, not surprisingly, Castletorrison). I searched the townland of Castletorrison on the six-inch scale maps of Donegal from the Donegal Library - http://www.donegallibrary.ie/ - and click on the Old Maps link. No Hilhead or Hill Head in the townland or near it (but I didn't spend a lot of time at this - the navigation on the computer is slow). There are a couple of Hill Heads which Google found for me. None are in or near Convoy parish. There is one just across the border a mile into Tyrone, near Clady and Castlefinn towns. Some real estate ads which Google found, locate a Hill Head at the eastern edge of Ardara town.....but again, no where near Convoy parish. A few hours browsing the Donegal six-inch maps might yield a Hilhead/Hill Head but, as the maps are indexed by townland, you'd have to start with Castletorrison and just "spread out" from there. As you asked, Hilhead might also be the name of a manor/estate house. The Townland Index maps (which I have) often indicate the names of such buildings, but there's nothing shown in the Castletorrison area. If I come across something, I'll drop you a line. 1. Re: [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] Aerial Genealogy
    2. Liam Martin
    3. Dear Gordon Thank you for your prompt reply and your interest in "Aerial Genealogy". It might be an idea to carry out a test project and place the results on your website. We could then refer to this in the Donegal Family History email lists, which are viewed by thousands of County Donegal, County Derry and County Tyrone family historians around the world. The response to this would provide an indication of how interested the listers would be in having photographs taken by powered paraglider pilots. Test Project "My paternal grandfather William Martin was married to Bridget McSheffrey (b 1865) whose father, William McSheffrey (McSheffry) is listed in the 1857 Griffiths Valuation as "Mc Sheaffry William, Gortnaskea, Fahan Upper, Donegal (1857) Lessor Peter Maxwell Plot 24" Referring to the OS or Discovery Series Sheet 07, William's plot of land lies North of the Burnfoot to Muff R238 route. Should a paraglider fly West to East along the road North of the R238 (the lesser Burnfoot to Churchtown Road) he/she would overfly the McSheffrey plot of land between the North boundry of the Birdstown Demesne and the Burnfoot to Churchtown Road. I am sure such a project would generate great interest in the genealogy community." I have just watched the TV program about the paraglider pilots two flew around Mount Everest - very hairy! There is a network of powered paraglider pilots in the country, and we should be able to cover requests for a lot of areas. Periodically I place images in my Picasa web album- http://picasaweb.google.com/Pelgis Latest update was today- pictures of Rossnowlagh beach, Co.Donegal. Regards GD

    3. Good evening from S.E. Queensland, Australia.I believe my great gandmother Ellen Ferry was from Dunfanaghy - also believe she travelled to Australia with her sister (Ann) and married brother and his wife(John and Fanny) aboard the CARIBOU, arriving in Sydney in October 1859. I also believe that another sister( Bridget)was sent out here(Australia) on the Lady Kennaway, aged 14as an Irish orphan. From the transcripts* believe their father was Michael and their mother, Mary. They were Catholic. If anyone has even the slightest piece of info on the family or their descendants I would be ever so grateful. Proud of my *Irish Heritage, Beverley
