    3. Yes, I have suspected that others are experiencing the same poor results that I have from providing information to some "help me" posters. Worse still is the experience of seeing such people then claim to have discovered the info on their own or outright ignore a limitation placed on dissemination of the info. On the average, though, the theory is that upping everyone's game improves the sport in general. However, when I seem to gush during communicating thanks for something, I do so not as a natural effusive type but to balance out the other type which provides no feedback. Now, onto other things. My laptop is due to arrive today or tomorrow. A whole new era in data collection is at hand but first I have to transfer my current computer files to the new one. The last time I had to do this I hired a computer guru to come to my house and burn the files onto a CD, which the next computer could not read well despite having a compatible Windows OS. I want to do better this time. My son, the budding computer guru, has told me that I must copy and paste all the contents of the emails which I have store in my folders on the left- hand frame of the Inbox screen) into a/several document(s) in my word processing program, which I then can put in a folder for burning onto a CD with a particular command. That will take a huge amount of time. Is there a way for a computer simpleton to do that more easily ? Also, is there a command to get the contents of folders already in "My Documents" onto a CD, without creating an intermediate folder to collectively hold a number of such images and text files ? Shouldn't there be a way to burn photos in "My Photos" directly onto a CD and that way would also work for contents of files stored in "My Documents" ? Please communicate in the simplest, clearest language possible, but thanks in advance for all suggestions. 3. A friend said I should invest in an additional hard drive that plugs into the USB port and store all of my genealogy there. If the lap top crashes, then I still have all of the records. I also plan on placing my records on CD in addition to the 'flash drives" a.k.a "thumb drives" I use. I need something small, so in case of emergency, I can grab it and exit with my records. 2. Sharon Carberry
    3. To everyone who posted here or emailed me: What a great response ! Every bit of that is helpful. In addition to the people who posted here, I need to mention Aggi-Rose Reddin, Bryan O'Halloran, and Paddy Casey who directly emailed me. This is my thinking at present: 1. External hard drives have been a very good thing for family historians because we cannot entrust our data to one single machine. 2. Burning onto CDs or DVDs is a good thing if you know something about file structure and computer programs. Ditto for flashdrive/jump drive/thumb drive. I have all those things at hand here at home but I am leary of file/program incompatibility because of my prior experience doing this. The offers of direct, step-by-step aid are really appreciated. 3. My first approach will be to upload my files to Doug's suggested XDrive, because I am very familiar with uploading and that is the least hardware-dependent way of accomplishing my goal. However, if that doesn't work, I will rummage through my extra cords and see if I have an Ethernet cable in that mess next to my current tower. That would work for the networking idea which Paddy sent me off-list. So, I am all set. The new computer did arrive yesterday, and I did pick up my son from his campus so he is here with me for this process. He showed me how to open it (I was trying the hinge side) since he also has a Dell. Then it was late and time for bed. Now I am doing my thank-you's. I will next make an on-topic posting to this list because I had an interesting time today assisting an Australian resident who could not read a NYC marriage license, which was easy for this ex-New Yorker. Then I will try turning on my new computer and get into it. I hope this has been as educational for you out there as it has been for me. Genealogy is all about data, and we must keep up with not only how to capture it but also how to preserve it. It really helps to have an online community to pool collective knowledge. You're the best. Sharon C. 3. I must contribute a funny (true) story here. I regularly and frequently back up an image of my computer's hard disk to an external USB hard disk and keep the external disk in a vault in a bank 300 yards from my home. The ultimate secure arrangement, right ? Belt-and-braces, right ? Well, last year we had some prolonged thunderstorms with flash flooding of the village and the bank vault was flooded, albeit not up to the level of my drawer. Of course, it wouldn't have mattered if the external disk had been saturated and rendered unusable because I had the original at home, but I just thought it was funny that not even a bank vault is safe. Now I have a third set of backup CDs stored at a friend's house................ And so it goes on. Paddy

    3. I would suggest a large capacity external disk drive. They have really come down in price. I have two and have yet to reach any limit on the first. They are easier to organize and harder to misplace. I for one want to thank you and the rest of the listers for giving me a glimpse at my Irish family living and those passed into history. I am a richer person for your efforts and thoroughly love watching the history posted daily on the list. God bless each and every one who dedicate their lives to making us all better people for your efforts.
