    3. Another consideration with these indexes is the fact that, with you still get a name-only listing so you still need to deal with which of three-five-or more Patrick Hogans in the 1868 deaths for Clare might be the right one. Also, transcription errors are common, and very likely someone is going to order the wrong record because even just one number is off in the entry info as transcribed. I did pay the fee at the Registrar's Office in Dublin and copied out all the death index listings for my various surnames. I have yet to order records for any of them. It has not been needed for my research. 3. LOL, the marvels of modern technology are wonderful, arn't they? I can only imagine what would happen if I were doing it. (I am notorious for overlooking the obvious mistakes. I belive this happens when my fingers get ahead of my small brain.) Joseph Sharon Carberry <sm8carberry@comcast.net> wrote: My apologies for the double posting just now, and really bad typing recently. I need to get a new computer, which will be soon I think. I have totally screwed up the Outloook program in my current one. My workaround for that is sending out messages before thorough proofreading. I will try harder in the interim. Sharon C.

    2. The civil indexes are kept by the GRO, not the Church, and have been filmed by the LDS. I think it would be a great volunteer project because the indexes are typeset so there's no difficult reading to guess at. In fact, I wonder if the entries could be scanned by an OCR system and then combined into larger chunks of time, say 5 or 10 years. Eventually, of course, the goal would be to have the indexes span the period from 1864 through, say, 1964, but 5- or 10-year chunks would be a great start, much easier than looking at 3 months at a time. 3. I would also be willing to work on this project. It seems its time has come! I suspect the problem would be there in Ireland, getting permission from the powers that be in the various Churches to have access to the records. Isn't that always the problem? Diane in the USA

    3. Wow, Jan, get out of my head. I was only thinking that this morning. I must say the thought of that is daunting but...not outside the realm of possiblity. (first time I ever had an Australian in my head, I have to say that!). I've been working at my "real job" this week but will catch up this weekend on the list. There have been many good posts this week that I'm looking forward to reading. 2. Hi list & Margaret, Noting the McNAMARAs in your list, I thought it was worth a shot to ask if you have a set of parents: Mary McNAMARA and Patrick FITZPARICK with a daughter, Elizabeth, "Eliza" b. Nov. 11, 1829. Co. Clare. Also, I will be in Ennis, Co. Clare, the end of May. Any suggestions on where I might do a little research for this family? I have compared the surname location on Griffiths list & find Patrick FITZPATRICKs & McNAMARAS in 15 locations. Thank you in advance, Jo Banks ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Paddy, I have photocopies for Clashduff (near Kilkishen) of the series you might be referring to when you said that the colored ink shows changes over the years since the GV. My set of pages, done at intervals between the GV and 1976, has such interlineations which are legible but only show a first and last name of the new property occupier. I have heard that some also has a year noted. These are generally known as the cancelled land books. So far as I know, the Valuation Office in Dublin will readily send those for any townland, but the fee is fairly hefty. I show below the National Archives description for both what Pat Connors described and for the series which I just described. Sharon Carberry "Other deposited Valuation Office records are the Field Books, House Books, Mill Books, Quarto Books, Record of Tenure Books and Miscellaneous Books, which relate to the preparation of the Primary Valuation and the earlier Townland Valuation. In addition, there are Letter Books 1827-94, Letter Registers 1850-61, records prepared under the Finance Act 1910, and Boundary Survey maps and registers relating to the determination and alteration of administrative boundaries 1826-41 and 1854-1925. The Cancelled Valuation Lists, or records of subsequent periodic revisions of the Primary Valuation, are still held in the Valuation Office, where they can be searched on payment of a fee. The annotated copies of Ordnance Survey maps associated with Griffith's Valuation have recently been transferred to the National Archives, where they are not yet available for inspection, but scanned copies can be viewed in the Valuation Office." http://homepage.eircom.net/~seanjmurphy/nai/puboffs.htm#Griffith ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patrick Casey" <pcasey@compuserve.com> To: <irl-clare-projects@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 26, 2007 1:36 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-CLARE-PROJECTS] Project suggestions - Griffiths Valuation > > Pat, > > I have not seen these books but understand that the copies in the archives > in Dublin are full of remarks made with coloured pens and these remarks are > no longer as clearly visible in the microfilmed versions. 3. I transcribed part the Clanwilliam Barony (Co Tipp) at the archives in Dublin in September and they were on film (now on the Tipperary section of my website). I found out about these records at a genealogy conference in Boston at the end of August and found the data very interesting. Yes, some are hard to read, like the tithes, but the info is invaluable. Paddy, you probably saw the original records which I was not directed to at the archives but films give up a lot of info and they are now available through the Family History Library. -- Pat Connors, visiting Port Charlotte FL http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
