Elizabeth, In case you are interested Brendan Graham's followup book to Whitest Flower is called Brightest Day Darkest Night and it is a great read. Whoops! I have just realised I have a copy of Thomas Kenneally's book "The Great Shame". The great shame is that it has stayed on my bookshelves. :o(( I have just put that on my "to do" list following the reading of Trinity! > > Another book I've read was by Brendan Graham and called the Whitest Flower > He is unusual in a fiction novelist in that he lists his research sources > from the Potatoe Famine and gives quite a graphic history of the Irish > through the eyes of his heroine. > He talks about the Church of Ireland and the Church of Rome (something I > new > nothing of) the Church of Ireland being the original Christian Church > before the British sent in the representatives of the Church of Rome and > subsequently the Church of England. Thank you Wilma. Another book I've read was by Brendan Graham and called the Whitest Flower He is unusual in a fiction novelist in that he lists his research sources from the Potatoe Famine and gives quite a graphic history of the Irish through the eyes of his heroine. He talks about the Church of Ireland and the Church of Rome (something I new nothing of) the Church of Ireland being the original Christian Church before the British sent in the representatives of the Church of Rome and subsequently the Church of England. . He also gives quite graphic detail about the scourge of the famine and the subsequent forced entry into Work Houses and immigration to Canada. It's all centred in County Clare and it certainly fired my interest. It's all fascinating to me! I can feel the eyes of my G.Grandmother boring into the computer screen over my shoulder from the photograph on the wall behind me <gg> and saying "tunder did you hear it", a saying she had as my Mum used to relate when there was a thunder storm in the Mallee. My Mum would be thrilled to see all this if she was alive today! My GG Grandmother emigrated here to Aus. but how is yet to be discovered (whether she came as a servant or on a Bride Ship). I suspect she came on a Bride Ship but have yet to be able to get any literature on that. Thanks again and I certainly will get Leon Uris' other book - Redemption - to read if it's still out there. Hi Elizabeth and all When you have finished "Trinity" must read "Redemption" Wonderful History insight Hooray for Leon Uris Wilma
Hello all, I'm a newby to this list as well as to researching my Irish forebears. I'm very grateful for the link to the Clare Library site because I think I may have happened on Hugh GORMAN my GG Grandfather. He is listed (along with 15 others) on a tithe applotment in Fossabeg - Townland and Tomgraney - Parish. It may well be a long straw because all I know of my G.Grandmother Catherine GORMAN is that her father was Hugh GORMAN and mother Honora MACANARTNEY and that Catherine was born in Scarriff, County Clare in1831. Catherine subsequently came to Australia and was married to my G.Grandfather Joseph HARWOOD on the goldfields of Wedderburn, Victoria. What I would like to know is if there is anyway of confirming the link. I do appreciate that the history of the times made record keeping extremely tenuous. I'm new to Irish history also having been brought up in the Anglican Church and secular schools. Have just started reading Leon Uris' book Trinity. Quite an eye-opener! Thank you for the chance to look! Thanks, Paddy, for the update. How much easier this is now... of course, as always, had to wander around the site, and once again checked the 1901 census for my family. Yes, they are still there, Dillons of Kinturk DED, Cloonbooly. It always makes me smile to see my grandmother, Bridget, aged two months listed as unable to write and not married. She died when my own mother was just 11, but from what I know of her, she had a wicked sense of humour. I'm sure she would see the funny side of it as well. Thanks to Liz Haren and all others who have transcribed the Tithe Applotment records. Muriel, This is a limitation of the Rootsweb listing system in that it sometime chops URLs into two or more bits. You can either go directly to the Clare Library site at www.clarelibrary.ie (where it is listed under "What's New") or you can simply glue the two bits of the URL together by copy-and-pasting and paste the result into your browser. Listers can also post this kind of information on the Clare Library Clare Past" forum at http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/index.php which keeps the URLs intact. Sometime in the last year I found a site with Clare directory listings and now don't know how to find it again. Some years ago we were able to locate a cousin of my husband's living in Lissycasey, met him in Ennis about 8 years ago, and have exchanged notes with him over the years. Now he's not answering our mail and we're concerned. I believe I saw a directory listing for him: Tom/Tommy/Thomas Kennedy in Lissycasey. Yes, this series is extensive enough that one person could not do all the extractions. However, we each could sign up for a surname or two or three. Besides the gen. value, reading as you type will be interesting, more so than the work involved in Tithe Applotment project. The printed nature of the series also eliminates guessing at the surnames and placenames recorded in handwriting in other series.
