Thank you, Pat. I now have enough information to make a sensible decision. While I have enjoyed the interaction on the traditional Clare list for many years (again my thanks to you for that opportunity), I will now be putting my efforts in another direction, since there is an undisclosed size limitation which impacts me considerably. My postings can easily exceed the size limit, and also I cannot continue when a list administrator cannot be candid about that and other changes made. I am anyway in the process of transferring my notes of Dublin Archives material into computer files to donate to the Clare Library. Again, I find myself admiring the efforts which precede mine, such as that of yourself, Pat, and of Cathy Joynt Labath, to have spent so many hours doing just that and putting the info on the Web so that others can benefit. It is such a grind to keep doing all that typing. At least I for the moment do not have to also figure out how to construct a website and do the maintenance, including cost factors. I find it pitiful to see all the postings on Rootsweb lists about how long people have been searching on Ancestry.com and not making progress. I need to distance myself from those. Perhaps I will not miss the interaction on the old Clare list. It really is a bunch of "help me" pleas to which I can only donate time, over and over again, in tutorials on how to make progress. The last thing such people want to hear is that the key to their success lies in becoming knowledgeable. Far too many of those posters just want instant answers and do not care to reciprocate. Not my kind of folks. My fascination with Clare history and the saga of the diaspora remains as strong as ever, and I will continue those pursuits. For those who can make use of actual data and who put the effort into analysis, watch this space and keep up with what the Clare Library places on the 'Net, because there can and will be so much more. The list admin can set the maximum size in his/her list tools. There is no limitation. If an email is sent to a list that exceeds the set size, then the list admin will get a message to look at the message. He/She can then decide to send it to the list or not. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

Genealogy community can help provide a dignified re-interrment of immigrants exhumed from Staten Island Quarantine Cemetery, buried from 1799-1858. Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries of Staten Island NY has sent a plea for letters of support for the proper re-interrment of the immigrant remains that were EXHUMED from a municipal parking lot once the site of the NYC Quarantine Hospital/cemetery. This particular NYC Quarantine station operated from 1799-1858. The immigrants who came to the USA during this time as well as those with disease living in the NYC Metropolian area and were ill (as many were) passed through the S.I. Quarantine Hosp and ultimately many died and were buried at the cemetery now a MUNICIPAL PARKING LOT. These human remains were EXHUMED in 2006. They are now held at a facility located in Brooklyn in storage boxes. Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries has offered a large section of a historic cemetery that we maintain for the proper reinterrment of these HUMAN remains. Without letters of support from you the genealogy community, these remains will be PUT BACK INTO THE PARKING LOT! Paved over once again and forgotten. Please, we ask that you take 1 minute of your time, send a letter of support to: SICemetery@aol.com . Support the reinterrment to Staten Island Cemetery. Time is once again running out for these unfortunate travelers. We in the genealogy community have accumulated their information, now we must provide to them final dignity. Your letter of support could make this possible. Please send a letter of support today to SICemetery@aol.com Thank you. Diane

Thanks, Don, for the info. Could the 40 KB be the old limit and the new one is 30 KB ? Sharon, mailing lists I admit I do not understand well, at least not as well as I understood the old lists. Messages that bounce to admin show a couple of telling things: 1. If over 40KB the message bounces to admin for approval. 2. But it does no good to approve such a message because everything after 40KB shows up as garbage, you know, XXXXXXXXX endlesly. I haven't seen RW lower the setting to 30KB, BUT up to 40KB the admin CAN limit the length of a message to 10, 20, 30, 40, etc. which is independent from the default set by staff. Good morning, intrepid list administrators, Could one of you tell us about any size limitations on postings to this Rootsweb list ? Are there any that Rootsweb has set ? Do the list administrators have the ability to set one ? Thanks. My interest is more than academic but not related to this particular list. Good Morning All: I just want to "flag" The Guardian Guide to Family History available free with today's(14.04.07) newspaper cost €1.80 or £1.40 This is a 90 page small compact guide which claims will help you to discover your roots. It starts with the bare bones-a concise, step-by-step guide to get you started. Also show how to read the hidden clues in Victorian photos and heirlooms. Then, Mary Braid puts theory into practice, tracing her own family back six generations in just three weeks. If you want to did deeper, you are introduced to specialist archives. And once you know your storey, Blake Morrison shows you how to tell it to others. Happy searching. Larry.

You're right, Jeanne, with the "....Those in Clare who would research areas in the US, and wherever else the Diaspora landed, could benefit from our knowledge, too....". Sharon has just posted that interesting note on the Clare Past forum ( http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/ ) about people with Clare names who came from Canada and fought in the American Civil War. Left me wondering whether one can work back from those names to their Clare origins. Those in Clare who would research areas in the US, and wherever else the Diaspora landed, could benefit from our knowledge, too. It's a win-win situation, folks. Thanks for this, Paddy. I've signed myself up but haven't posted anything yet. When I do, I'm sure I'll pepper my post with plenty of questions for those Clare men and women back home who know things only the locals could know. But I also hope to share in the same way. Those in Clare who would research areas in the US, and wherever else the Diaspora landed, could benefit from our knowledge, too. It's a win-win situation, folks. Once again, that wonderful institution, Clare County Library, has offered Clare researchers the world over another juicy course in its constantly-updated buffet. (Hmmm. I sound hungry, don't I?) Partake and enjoy!!!! Happy Easter!
