Alas, Matt Lauer only set down at Shannon and left immediately for Galway, out of which he flew in order to view the cliffs. Then the rest of the show was done back in Galway city, only until 9 a.m. when he again took off for his next destination in the world (apparently a successful wind farm operation run by a father-and-son team, from the clues given, per my interpretation). No, I did not tape it but this is the first time that I have seen the cliffs in a moving image. Lots of still images on the Web. I have never been to the western coast in Clare (I have been to Spiddal in Galway), because I am usually in Dublin in record offices doing my Clare research. This morning I have been involved with the final stages of interpretation of Clare people in Manitowoc County WI, about which I will soon post after doing this research for the past 7 or so years. Some things are finally coming into focus, but it has taken years of collecting bits of info, getting in contact with descendants, and pouring over the results as I was doing this morning once again. Thanks to everyone who is making suggestions for us to have a great trip. Dear List, In California we are fighting a terrible bill in our legislature that is really anti dog/cat. With the bill there will be no more dogs in one generation. As we are fighting against this bill, I have heard that there are lots and lots of puppy mills in Ireland. A friend's friend has a neighbor who has crates and crates of crammed full of puppies younger than 4 months old come to him. He registers them with a non-AKC registry and has gobs of people come in on the weekends to get these dogs. Anyone hear of puppy mills in Ireland? Thank you for any help. Alanna
Thank you Sharon, I had forgotten that I had looked at that list of Land Holders. I even looked at it after I posted my question. That Batt is mine. He is my gg grandfather. I had thought that I had looked at the Valuations but I was wrong. I was looking at just the index part. Batt is there also. My father left home at age 16. He wrote to one of his youngest brothers all the time. But my father did not always tell the truth. Why? I do not know. It could have been that his brother told me when I paid for my father to talk to him once. There were no phone lines into the area until just before the brother died. Batt's son Martin was dead by 1901 when his wife is shown as a widow in the Census. I will just have to use the information you gave below and what I see in the Valuations. It is sad to not only deal with no information from your relatives, but maybe untruths. My father could have asked his brother, but if he did, he did not save all the brother's letters. A couple that were saved showed that the brother was trying to give me information. Sad that my father either did not care or he decided that I did not need to know. It was understood by my mother and me that communication between my father and his brother was privileged information. Yes, strange, but that was the way it was and what I grew up knowing. And you did not cross my father about things. Thank you. Alanna Sharon Carberry <smc.clare@gmail.com> wrote: Alanna, your inquiry was: Do you know of a land lord "some what" near Cappanagerrah? ...My father talked about walking a cow home and he was not happy with that cow... Anyway, he might have had to go to the landlord to get her. Either he or someone else said that the landlord really liked my gfather and gave him title to the land. My kin were there since say the late 1700's or early 1800's. I am guessing that the handling over of the title would have been sometime from 1864 when he was born to 1921. My father said that there were old towers all over the area. I do not remember if he said that the landlord lived in a "castle" or not." The Landowners list, popularly attributed to 1875, lists these Scanlans as owning property at Cappanageragh, Ballynacally: Bartholomew 9 acres James 30 acres There are at least 5 other men owning similar acreage on that townland, according to the same list: Michael Brown 79 acres Denis Hinchy 14 acres John King 67 acres Patrick McMahon 15 acres Thomas Maloney 76 acres I doubt that any of them were the involved landlord, but, if you really want to the answer and are willing to spend some time on it, then you can research what any of those men had to say about their property or, as I indicated before, just order into your local FHC the right film with the Registry of Deeds indexing for this townland. There is a way to get to the answer but it takes work on your part and, yes, some expense on gas and film rental. I do not know whether you have consulted this Landowners list previously, as you did not mention it when setting out your inquiry, but it has been available on the Internet for over five years. My copy is a photocopy made many years ago from a Porland, Maine library book which I obtained (for free) via interlibrary loan. There are some basic materials, in addition to basic knowledge, which can be kept on hand and prove useful time and time again. Having gone over some other of my hard-copy materials (still have not unzipped my computer files), I see that the major landlords in this area in the early to mid 1800s included Stackpoole and Ross-Lewin, the latter of whom is listed in the Landowners list with his Clondegad residence called Ross Hill being shown as in Killadysert, which seems strange to me. The News Sentinel, Fulton County, Indiana Wednesday, January 5, 1938 Logansport, Jan. 5. -- Matthew MORONEY, 77, one of Cass county's most prominent residents, a pioneer of Harrison township and former treasurer of Cass county, died at his home, two miles east of Lucerne at 6 o'clock Tuesday morning. Death occurred at his home, "Forest Lodge" following a brief illness. He had been a life-long resident of the farm on which he died. He was born in 1860, the son of Matthew, and Marguerite (MANIX) MORONEY on November 8. At that time the county was more or less a wilderness and the home was a one-room log cabin. Mr. Maroney, a strong member of the Democratic party, was elected to the office of township trustee in 1905, serving in that capacity until his election as Cass county treasurer in 1907. He was re-elected as treasurer in 1911. His parents, natives of County Clare, Ireland, came to America in 1850, landing in New Orleans. They stopped at Memphis, Tenn., Cincinnati, O., and Hagerstown, Ind., before coming to Cass county. On arriving here the elder Moroney cleared the land and made a productive farm from it. He died in 1876 at the age of 56, his widow living until 1896. After the death of his father, Matthew Moroney, continued to operate the farm and became regarded as one of the progressive men in the community. He married Mary BACKUS Nov. 9, 1881. Mrs. Moroney died in 1906. She and Mr. Moroney were members of St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic church at Lucerne. Mr. Moroney also was a member of Elks lodge and K. of C. in Logansport. The body was prepared for burial at Kroeger and Son funeral home and removed to the residence where friends may call. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday from St. Elizabeth's Catholic church in Lucerne with Father Charles SEEBERGER, of Kewanna, in charge. Burial will be in St. Vincent's cemetery here. Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. William SHANLEY, Kewanna; Mrs. Peter PIERCE, Logansport; Mrs. Rose FAYLOR, at home; Mrs. W. S. FLACK, Mishawaka; Mrs. Mary McDOWELL Indianapolis; three sons, Matthew, Jr., Bethlehem township; Charles, Harrison township; Richard, of South Bend, and six grandchildren. online at: http://www.fulco.lib.in.us/Tombaugh/Obituaries/Html/1938.htm --------------------------------- Ahhh...imagining that irresistible "new car" smell? Jennifer, I am interested in the O'Loughlin surname. My ggg grandparents were Michael and Honora O'Loughlin. All I know is that they lived in Co. Clare. Any possible connection would be of great help to me. I have hit a major brick wall with all of the ancestors back in Co. Clare. Thanks for all your work! The below message, already posted this morning, was done as a reply to Paddy Casey but appeared in my inbox as a reply to Alanna. Sorry for any confusion, but my new Gmail program is causing some issues. It also took me far too long to do a reply on the St. Patrick's parish inquiry because I could not accomplish a simple cut-and-paste. I may have to switch my address again and use a different inbox. Some additional info on a Protestant church in this civil parish: Kilquane of St. Patrick's North A chapelry, in the barony of Bunratty, county of Clare, and province of Munster, 2 miles (N.) from Limerick, on the north side of the river Shannon; containing 2028 inhabitants...On the river Blackwater, which runs into the Shannon, are two large flour-mills, the property of S. Caswell, Esq...The seats are Spring Hill, the residence of P. McAdam, Esq. ; Quinsborough, of Martin Honan, Esq. (formerly the residence of Lord George Quin); Whitehall, of Capt. R. Kane; Fairy Hill, of E. Burnard, Esq.; Thomas Island, of J. Tuthill, Esq. ; and Cottage, of R. Rodgers, Esq. It is a perpetual cure, forming with Singland, or St. Patrick's South, the rectory of St. Patrick, in the diocese of Limerick, and part of the union of St. Patrick and of the corps of the treasurership of the cathedral of Limerick. The tithes, amounting to £184. 12. 33/4., are payable to the rector ; the curate has a stipend of £75, and £12 per ann. from Primate Boulter's augmentation fund. The church is a neat building with a tower and spire, towards which the late Board of First Fruits granted £700 in 1819...The parochial school is chiefly supported by the rector, who allows £10 per ann. and discharges the rent of the school-house ; and at Parteen is a large national school, chiefly supported by a grant of £30 per ann. from the Board. The school-house, erected by Mr. Honan in 1833, consists of a centre and two projecting wings, and contains apartments for the master and mistress. The ruins of the old church still remain in the burial-ground. Samuel Lewis description of 1837 , on Clare Library's site http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/kilquane1837.htm Note that there is large Caswell family history website, in which the current Canadian branch traces its line back to Blackwater. I don't have a link for that handy right now, but, if interested, just Google with key terms. Also note that "Carbally" in the marriage record is Corbally, the one close to Kilquane. According to the Brian Mitchell book on churches and graveyards of Ireland, the "established church" building was on the townland of Parteen, and the only graveyard for St. Patricks civil parish was on the townland of Kilquane. One last thing to note, a Dennis Canny of Ennis made quite a name for himself in the early to mid 1800s; some of that should come up with Googling. You might also want to do some follow-up with the biographical notices microfiche having the Rose ffolliott (copyrighted) data, which I mention a lot but which is not online.
