Hi Jeanne, thank you, but I simply asked for this as a backup in case I missed anything. I'm a great fan of www.failteromhat.com and refer to it often. I actually did have all I needed re Griffith's for my great great grandfather.. I'm one of the lucky ones, but how I'd love to find out the exact date of his marriage, his baptism, etc. Family still live on the same land that he did, and from one of his sons, my great grandfather down, I have been able to find quite a lot, with help from some very kind souls such as our own Larry Brennan. I have conflicting dates for his marriage, but eventually it will all gel. www.seanruad.com is another well used site. Thanks for the advice though. I'm sure others can benefit from it as well. Alice, You have to remember that the www.seanruad.com townland index as townlands were spelled in the 1851 census. There are two other townland indices for two other years. It is not uncommon for the enumerator to occasionally misspell a townland name. In 1901 my Macs townland was written "LAcarrow Lower" and in 1911 it was written "LEcarrow Lower", so mistakes do happen. In 1851 the townland index has it as Lecarrow Lower. However, for the land revisions records, the Irish names of the townlands are used. You really just have to know what the name is, or you need to be very creative. Lecarrow Lower becomes Laccaroe, and Cloontyconnaught becomes Cloutha, Clonty, and finally Clounty as it is known today. Also, town names are completely capitalized and written with a T at end, e.g.: "Feakle" (townland) and "FEAKLE T." (town). Sometimes Bally or Balli is spelled different so if you select "Starts with" and only type Ball and select the county or PLU you will get a list of all and will more than likely see your townland of interest. Hmmm. Well, I'll get into a second window and walk a search through and see if I can talk you through it. I hadn't noticed anything strange the last time I used it, which was just this week... I'm going to search for the townland my great-grandmother came from, Erribul, in the RC parish of Kilfiddane, which was also its civil parish-- but keep in mind that isn't always the case. I'm going to pretend that I am uncertain as to the spelling of the townland. It will make this a better example of how to search this website. Step 1: Type in er in the townland field under SEARCH DATA. Step 2: Make sure the spot next to townland is ticked under the column SORT BY. Step 3: Choose AT BEGINNING OF FIELD under SEARCH METHOD. This column is important to be aware of, especially if you've typed in an entire place name, but you have spelled it incorrectly. That may be why your results aren't what you expected. Step 4: Because I've chosen to use only the first two letters because that's all I am certain of, I want to limit the search by as many other criteria I can. So I'll choose Clare in the county drop-down menu, and I'm going to click on Submit. If I don't know how to spell the townland, I probably also don't know any other information. Hmmm. Well, I'll get into a second window and walk a search through and see if I can talk you through it. I hadn't noticed anything strange the last time I used it, which was just this week... I'm going to search for the townland my great-grandmother came from, Erribul, in the RC parish of Kilfiddane, which was also its civil parish-- but keep in mind that isn't always the case. I'm going to pretend that I am uncertain as to the spelling of the townland. It will make this a better example of how to search this website. Step 1: Type in er in the townland field under SEARCH DATA. Step 2: Make sure the spot next to townland is ticked under the column SORT BY. Step 3: Choose AT BEGINNING OF FIELD under SEARCH METHOD. This column is important to be aware of, especially if you've typed in an entire place name, but you have spelled it incorrectly. That may be why your results aren't what you expected. Step 4: Because I've chosen to use only the first two letters because that's all I am certain of, I want to limit the search by as many other criteria I can. So I'll choose Clare in the county drop-down menu, and I'm going to click on Submit. If I don't know how to spell the townland, I probably also don't know any other information. Alice, Not sure what you meant by incorrect. Entering a townland name did not work like it usually does. But just entering a county name gives all the townlands alphabetically and you just have to sort through them. He and his brother, John, was also a priest in Brooklyn. They are buried in the same cemetery in NY as my grandparents. Their sister, Margaret, married a McInerney. Good Evening All I am looking for info on Mathew O'Brien and his wife Mary Scully. Mathew emigrated to the US/Virginia/Lynchburg about 1839/40. His children came later and it is reported his wife died in Ireland. The baptismal register for the three children born in Ireland have him there until Sept of 1839(9 mos before last child born). I have who I believe is him on the 1840 census for Bedford County Virginia. This data was suppose to be as of 1 June 1840. Going back to the Baptisaml Registers the children were baptized in what is today known as the ecclesiastical Parish of Bodyke-Tomgraney. The priest recorded the family's address as Knockbrack which is a subdivision of the townland of Drummod. Once in Virginia Mathew married Minerva Litchford and their first born was my Great Grandmother--Elizabeth Catherine O'Brien. If I am fortunate that anyone out there has info on this family I would certainly appreciate it. There are about 5 of us descendants working on this and I am headed to Ireland this fall to see if legwork can replace money and find out anymore about Mathew.
