    3. My great grandfather Patrick O'Callaghan and his wife emigrated from County Clare to Adelaide, South Australia, during 1854 and they were sponsored under an emigration scheme by Patrick Fennell who at the time was married to Mary O'Callaghan and they lived near Adelaide. I would like to know more about the O'Callaghans and the Fennells particularly their families in Ireland as I have been unable to identify where they lived in County Clare, their parents, or how Patrick O'Callaghan and Patrick Fennell got to England to catch their ships to Australia. 2. To narrow down where they came from in Clare, look on the Tithe Applotments on the National Archives site and the Griffith's index on failteromhat.com for civil parishes that had those surnames. Then note on a parish map of Clare where they seemed to cluster. Then convert to Catholic parishes on the Irish Times site and check the status of records in the likeliest parishes. Many have been filmed by the LDS and some have been transcribed on the Clare Library site. Even if you don't find your ancestors' names in the church records, you'll likely figure out about where in Clare they came from. 3. Terrence, You've done well if you've found immigration papers to South Australia. A lot were destroyed in a flood of the Torrens River. Do you have the name of the ship? Were there others from Clare aboard?. When did Patrick Fennell arrive? From what you're saying Mary O'Callaghan married Patrick Fennell and her brother Patrick O'Callaghan married ???. Unfortunately, I think you'll find more in Australian records than you will in Ireland. Look for death records of both couple or you may need to buy death certificates. That should give parents. You can try Clare library, but most of the record only give heads of household rather than family groups. And because births and marriages predate 1864 civil registrations you need to know a townland, religion and parish before looking in Ireland. And in most cases it requires a personal visit to Dublin or paying a local researcher. Also check migration lists at Clare Library on the off chance somebody has transcribed any SA passenger lists. Peter
