Lyn, I keep saying, you'll probably find more detail in Australian records than looking pre 1864 civil registrations in Ireland. Presumably from his Australian marriage and death records you have Michael John Grady born c1831 with father Patrick. I'd first try to pin down migration records. If it's NSW, use Indexes Online. If it's SA, try The Ship's List. You might also try convict records if that's a suspicion. If you have an Ancestry subscription or can get access via a local library or FHS centre, an historical records search should find him. All the above sites can be found by a simple Google search. Otherwise try my favourite Australian site www.coraweb.com.au. Make sure you look at all original images. NSW Indexes online has them digitised. Ancestry has two different images. Don't believe their transcriptions. Look at originals. You should find lots of extra clues. And make sure you try O'Grady as well. Look also who, if any, might have accompanied him. There may also be some clues in naming patterns of his children. Many things to consider. And a bit of work to be done. Peter
