    3. Friend’s happy new year from County Clare: The Gathering & Ireland Reaching out Project is about to commence in Ireland & County Clare. Further information to follow. This programme s will have great advantage to us within the Genealogy Community: A lot of People with just Clare Roots will be trying to return to the County but it struck me to ask would there be any advantage if we compiled an index to predominate name associated with individual Parishes. For example if some one said to me they were Durack s I would direct them to East Clare and Feakle. If you were Clune I would guide you towards Clooney / Quin. Barry to the Kilnamona area. Gallery to Ennistymon Area. Would some one take on the co-ordinating of the most prominent names within the Parishes within the County and would there be individual who would feed into the project with their Parish of interest. What I recommend we establish the top 10 or 20 names within the Parish. Remember we have all the records available on the Clare Library site. Tithes, Griffiths, 1901 & 1911 Census. We could then prepare a map showing the results. Just a though. Slán, Larry.

    2. Great idea Larry! I cannot volunteer for this, but it sounds like a great idea. I have O'Laughlins, and a Mary Collins from Co. Clare. Mary might have been from Feakle, but my source for the origin of these people is from a woman whose daughter told me that, if she didn't have a good story to tell, she made one up. Happy New Year! 3. Larry, I know that Clare County Library has plans to produce maps showing the relative distibution of surnames using the Combined List of Surnames data on the website at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/surname_list_combined.htm . It's a very logical step because it "mines" the census, Griffith's, and Tithe Applotment data which has already been collected and tabulated, i.e. what one might call the spadework has already been done. Rainer Kosbi has recently developed a new version of his maps system which would allow him to show the distribution. This has been a long-time objective of the library and it is only recently that they have been in a position to develop this new service. As I understand it the new surname mapping should become available later this year (2013). 3. Hi Larry, This would be a very good idea and great help to people getting started. It would also help tracking down the oldest generations of a family tree. Some years ago I tried mapping my O'Grady family by townland and drew up the results in a spreadsheet that was laid out to roughly match the geographical relationships. I used the Griffiths distributions. It was useful for understanding the distribution of the family and showed they had moved in two directions from their origins around Iragh. I would caution on one thing, families overtime end up leaving their original territory so it would be important not to conflate all the different sources into the one map but rather draw up each separately. At the time I also did some work on the Quinlan/Quinlivan name and discovered that they were clearly divided between the east and west of the county. I thought this warranted some socio-linguisitic explanation but did not have the expertise to do so. I would propose to the Clare Library a more comprehensive view of the task, that is, that they make it as an (annual?) time map showing the movement in the namesakes throughout the county at some suitable time interval, linked with births and deaths rather than just a static record of local frequencies, and if they could add the migrations out of the county both to elsewhere in Ireland and to overseas it would create a great understanding of our migration history both on a micro and macro scale. cheers jon On 02/01/2013, at 12:06 AM, Larry Brennan wrote: > Friend’s happy new year from County Clare: > > > > The Gathering & Ireland Reaching out Project is about to commence in Ireland > & County Clare. > > > > Further information to follow. > > > > This programme s will have great advantage to us within the Genealogy > Community: > > > > A lot of People with just Clare Roots will be trying to return to the County > but it struck me to ask would there be any advantage if we compiled an index > to predominate name associated with individual Parishes. > > > > For example if some one said to me they were Durack s I would direct them to > East Clare and Feakle. > > If you were Clune I would guide you towards Clooney / Quin. > > Barry to the Kilnamona area. > > Gallery to Ennistymon Area. > > > > Would some one take on the co-ordinating of the most prominent names within > the Parishes within the County and would there be individual who would feed > into the project with their Parish of interest. > > > > Slán, > > > > Larry. > > > > =========================== > Try http://www.google.ie/ > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-CLARE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. As a footnote to my last posting. I believe there are few records indicating the migrations overseas from the county. These figures might be better collected by the diaspora from the various points of disembarkation where the county of the immigrant is often recorded, as was done here in Australia. This would require mobilising each local community to trawl their records for people of Clare origins and compile the frequencies of the namesakes. I think this could be done quickly in OZ as so much of this material is on-line. It might be more difficult elsewhere and for other exit modes like joining the British regiments. Perhaps other OZ subscribers who know the materials well could suggest how we could do this and what effort it would take. cheers jon On 02/01/2013, at 12:06 AM, Larry Brennan wrote: > Friend’s happy new year from County Clare: > > > > The Gathering & Ireland Reaching out Project is about to commence in Ireland > & County Clare.

    3. Larry, It seems to me the job's half done. We already have a database in Griffiths Valuation on the Clare Library site which also has the frequency of surnames as well. I'd suggest seeing if that list could be enhanced by adding the capacity to resort either list by clicking on column headings. It's seems a rather simple change. It's done on many other sites. 3. Peter & All, Jim Mc Namara has been working off line developing a research tool with regard to this. I will cut and paste Jim's thought later in the day for Boards views. I have made a New Years resolution, Day job to be done by day, Genealogy is a hobby to be done after work hours. Thanks to all, Larry. -----Original Message----- From: irl-clare-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-clare-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Peter R Booth Sent: 02 January 2013 00:02 To: irl-clare@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [IRL-CLARE] Predominate Names in the Parishes of County Clare Larry, It seems to me the job's half done. 3. Happy New Year to you too Larry This sounds a wonderful project - as someone who is finding nothing but brick walls in the homeland of my grandmother's family it would be something I'd appreciate. Its family tradition that says my Quinns came from Co. Clare, although I can find nothing online anyways to back that up... and then there are the Caffreys, Coyles, Melias, and Gaffneys - and who knows what names link with all of them.. from where I know not (Coyles might be Meath but I haven't found them either).. I wish it were something with which I could help..
