    3. Jeanne, You are doing for Foley what I have been doing for the past decade with Carberry, because I know that the Carberrys arrived in Clare no earlier than the late 1700s. The research is extending over a long period of time because there were two main septs of native-Irish Carberrys, one in Westmeath and one in Waterford. My approach has been a differential one: collecting everything I can on the native Irish ones (after learning that the aristocratic ones were Norman English, who were given confiscated Barony of Carbery lands in Cork and then assumed the name as their surname after so many years of being called Lord and Lady Carbery). and then comparing those details with my family's details. Even the latest Leeson list findings are helpful, since the Fox emigrants are shown as being from Ballymaconnel where my Carberrys first appeared in parish records (Fox is a common Westmeath name, not a Clare name, and my Carberrys used Peter and Thomas, which are heavily used in the Westmeath families). This research and anlysis will continue until I am satisfied that I have sufficient evidence to call it. So, I provided some background on the Lukey family, for which I know you have a similar Lukey-Foley connection from the Davoren materials, which, added to Declan's newspaper article on the same Basil Lukey, starts to gel as relevant and also to point to a potentially useful relationship of East Clare to the Kilrush area via the involved landlords or estates hiring local men. If you don't have data to analyze, then the analysis cannot occur. Unfortunately, definitive data in just one record source is hard to come by in Irish genealogy. If you find that it has no ultimate utility, just toss. At this point, though, you might want to find a Lukey will or two , or some other document relating to the second half of the 1700s, to see if you can catch Basil of Cork acquiring or disposing of property in Kilrush, and maybe bringing a Foley from a Cork estate to manage some Kilrush land. Back when we were discussing (offline) the Registry of Deeds films (via LDS), I meant to mention that the placename books may be hard to read as filmed but the surname indexes should be easy since the handwriting is so clear even back into the 1700s. I went to the link and searched the site in a couple of ways. There was a reference to a placename on the homepage in Bermondsey in London, a "Folly (or Foley) Bridge", and three individual's names in the database, with only Margaret Foley named by given name from Youghal, Co. Waterford. The other two included no other information other than who their spouses were, as related to the Lucey family. A search of this website for "Clare" didn't give me anymore indication, either, that these Foleys were connected to mine. How far afield does one look within reason when one knows that one's family must have come from somewhere outside of Clare? > > Jeanne > > Sharon Carberry <sm8carberry@comcast.net> wrote: Lucey and Foley of Kilmichael, Cork > http://www.rickmansworthherts.freeserve.co.uk/webpage36.htm > > Clare Journal 1813 > Dec 27 > Deaths > At Lukeville, county Cork, Basil Lukey, Esq., Attorney, late of Belvoir, in this county, aged 85 years > [posted by Declan Barron in '04] > > Belvoir is the big house on the eastern edge of Kilkishen, associated in the mid/late 1800s with the Wilson family. > > posted by Sharon C. > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-CLARE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > > --------------------------------- > Stay in the know.
