    1. [IRL-CLARE] Free Access to Origins
    2. It does work! I just went thru the process to register and I did not give any payment info. After putting in my demographics, and agreeing to 'terms of service', I was on a page that had my account info that said I had the 24 hours free access. I thought I was at a dead end for the 'free access', but noticed that I had a 'logout' at the top of the page (which meant I was 'logged in') so I clicked on the tab at the top of the page for 'Irish Origins' and I was in without a problem. I did not click on the link to subscribe when I was on that 'account' page because that would have asked me for payment. Kathleen Richmond

    3. Thank you to all who shared their varying experiences with the free-access day at Origins.net. It seems that at some point the free access mechanism was activated. When I returned home last night, I tried again (having signed up in the wee morning hours) and clicked through to the desired databases with no problem at all. Then I spent 3 solid hours of reaping info, which I cannot fully display here due to the terms of service. There were some surprises and there was some info which can serve as a useful overview as I continue my research. I would like to share a little bit with listmembers now, in a question-and-answer format. The three databases which I searched were the militia attestations, the wills index, and the signators of the 1848 William Smith O'Brien petition (this latter database being the one which provides a useful overview of men having the same surname and the part of the county where they lived). This site has a handy way to access surname variants, which reliably bring up good ones; I used that extensively in order to reach all possibilities. Sharon Carberry Georgia 1. What East Clare surnames (of the ones that I inputted) were markedly missing from the databases? HARDGROVE/Hargrove - nothing at all BARRON: one only, Thomas Baron in Corofin, as an 1848 signator of the O'Brien petition 2. What brand new (to me) spelling variant of a well- known East Clare name appeared ? LEDDY Michael Laddy is listed in 1848 as signing the O'Brien petition in Newmarket on Fergus. 3. What happened to the surname NESTOR, which appears sparsely in Clare records but all around the county ? The 1848 O'Brien petition signators named Nestor all signed in/near Ennis: Andrew, John, and Thomas in Ennis, and Michael in Clare Abbey. 4. What unusual Clare surname appeared in only one small locality ? Two (maybe three) men named LUCEY, the only ones listed for the surname Lukey (associated with the Davoren family) were shown in the Militia Attestation database as born in Kilkee: Martin (twice) and James. 5. What surname routinely appearing elsewhere in numerous variations appeared in the 1848 O'Brien petition database as only one spelling (which I assume is the spelling preferred by Clare families) ? The O'Brien signators all appear as ROUGHAN: 15 men in/near Ennis and one (John) in Tulla. 6. Any Kilkishen listings ? Matthew MEEHAN in "Kil--- nr. Six Mile Bridge" in a Militia Attestation file. John GRACE in "Kilkeshan, Co. Clare" in a Militia Attestation file. 7. What insight was there for the Frawley/Fraly enigma ? The will dated 14 Aug 1812 of Owen FRALY residing Knockacarn, Clare, is on file as an abstract. This man may well be the grandfather of the apparent brothers Owen and Patrick Frawley of Lackyle, mid-1800s. A transcript exists of the 1836 will of Rev. Patrick McMahon was handled by Rev. Charles FALY of "Trulla" as executor. The 1848 O'Brien petition signators of the surname included these men signing at Newmarket on Fergus: Frawley: Jerry, John (two), and Martin Fraly: Michael 8. What were the surprise connections between East Clare families (among those which I am researching) ? McNAMARA A grant from the estate of Martin McNamara residing "Kimrrygaul" (Kilmurray na gall, just south of Kilkishen) was made on 20 Aug 1816 to his daughter-in-law Catherine McNamara "alias Donnellan" (referring to her maiden name). McCARTY A marriage license was granted in 1780 to Thomas McCarty concerning Ann Connell, spinster residing Cross, Clare. ----- Original Message ----- From: <RichmondK8@aol.com> To: <irl-clare@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 04, 2006 2:04 PM Subject: [IRL-CLARE] Free Access to Origins > It does work!
