    3. Hi, Clare Journal 30 May 1831 Francis Macnamara, Esq., of Aranview, has been appointed a Magistrate in this county. Capt. McDonald, of the 5th Foot, stationed at Clifden, and Capt. Spence, of the same Regiment, stationed at Ennistymon, have been appointed Magistrates of the county Clare. Captain Studdert, R.N., of Kilrush, is appointed to the Commission of the Peace. A large number of men, embodied in Dublin under Sir John Harvey, for the Police in this County, have reached here. Fifty of them are now in Tulla, under the immediate command of Mr. Colthurst, Stipendiary Magistrate. Yesterday, while several persons were engaged making bargins, and marking out portions of the bog of Doora, to cut turf for the present season, a man, dressed in woman's clothes, went in amongst them, and warned them off, cautioning them not to give more than half the price that was paid for the ground last year. The order was immediatly obeted. Extract of a letter, dated Kilrush, May 27 1831 It being so long since you have heard from this part of King Terry's territories, that I believe you suppose we are in a state of repose; but I assure you the contrary is the case .......... Crofton Moore Vandeleur, Randal Borough, and Joseph Lucas Cox, Esqs., ........... Cooleen Lodge, beyond Carrigaholt, the property of Robert Cox, of Fairy Hill, in the County Tipperary, Esq., a Magistrate for this County, was demolished, furniture &c., destroyed. ........ Mr. Borough, Mr. Carey, C.C., and a strong force of Police and Military are escorting through the street a party of Terrys to Ennis Gaol .......... R. Borough, Cappa Lodge, Esq. Extract of a letter, dated Knock, May 25 1831 ........ the house of John Culligan, of Benvoran, in the parish of Kilmurry, was knocked down and himself sworn to give half his land to a person who had some years back possessed it. On the same night the house of Patrick Culligan, of Carhunisky, in the same parish, was visited, but not finding him at home, all his Sunday clothes and those of his wife were cut to pieces. In the parish of Killofin, several houses were searched for arms, and two men, named Molony and Frs. Healy, cruelly beated. On Saturday two remaining houses of poor Cotter, of Lack, in the Parish of Kilmichael, were destroyed; fortunatly Cotter was not on the lands, for when his dwelling house was a short time back destroyed, a humane neighbour anf friend, John Pyne, of Tullycrine, gave him and his family shelter in an out-house. These heartless legislators, however, not satisfied with the mischief already done, seized two of Cotter's labourers, placed them on their knees, and with guns at their breasts swore them to go to Pyne and tell him that Lady Clare ordered him, on pain of death, to turn Cotter and his family out. ........ visited, amoungst others, Mr. Thomas Studdert, of Danganelly, ...... attacked the house of Mr. Gilbert Standish O'Grady, of Faunus, in the Parish of Killimur, and after breaking all the windows ...... Clare Journal 30 June 1831 On Thursday night last, the house of Giles Talty, near Miltown, was attacked, when they beat him dreadfully and took away his daughter. The moment Captain Roberts, Chief Magistrate, heard the circumstance hi instantly proceeded to Miltown, and took the imformations of Talty. Having asserted that the lads had taken her twords Kilrush, he proceeded there and having called on Lieut. Carey, C.C.P., who accompanied him, and after some pursuit they seceeded, in the morning, in finding the daughter, but unfortunatly the man that took her away got imformation of the approach of the police and made off. We are happy to say Captain Roberts has suceeded in arresting three of the gang. ......... a man named Thomas McMahon, who was arrested ..... murder ..... bail ..... was found on Sunday last, in the lake of Kyle, near Cullane, with a rope around his neck, to which was attached a large stone ........ not his own act. The body of McMahon was found floating on Sunday, by Mr. Bridgeman, who had been boating on the lake. ........
