Declan, Thank you very much for the work you are doing in transcribing these RIC records. A question: are you transcribing this data by hand or are you scanning the Journal pages and using some kind of optical character recognition software to transfer the text ? I'd be interested to know whether old newspapers such as the Clare Journal can be transcribed in this fashion using a digital camera and inexpensive OCR software. I know that the British Library, for example, is scanning and indexing old newspapers but they are using very-big-budget equipment and software and infrastructures which are way beyond the means of our ilk. If a cheap digital camera/OCR solution were feasible it would leverage the efforts of the zillions of amateurs who are beavering away in the archives and reading rooms. Maybe I'll buy myself an OCR package for Christmas and experiment. If you or someone else who regularly visits the Manse could get a few good shots of Clare Journal pages with a good (e.g. 6+ megapixel) camera and send them to me as JPG files I could have a try. But maybe you have done all this already.
