Clare Journal 7 Dec 1876 Constabulary News - Mounted Sub-Constable Smith of the Ennis station has, we are glad to say, been promoted to the rank of Constable, dating from the 5th inst. By order of the Inspector General of Constabulary Court of Inquiry will assemble at Clare Castle tomorrow, to investigate the charge preferred against Sub-Constable Normoyle of that station by Constable O'Neill for alleged insubordination. The Court will consist of Sub-Inspector Wilton (president), Sub-Inspector O'Donel (member), Sub-InspectorQuill (prosecutor). The following transfers have taken place lately in this county by order of County Inspector Henry, viz. - Sub-Constable Charles O'Sullivan, from Kilfenora to Tulla ; Sub-Constable Richard Carroll, from Limerick to Scariff ; Sub-Constable Patrick Burns, from Castlebar to Ennis ; Sub-Constable John Scullon, from Waterford (city) to Ballyvaughan ; Sub-Constable James Ayrey, from Kilkenny city to Ennis ; Sub-Constable Henry Black, fro Tipperary to Kilfenora ; Sub-Constable Martin Moran, from Coolbawn to Kilbane ; Sub-Constable Cornelius Reardon, from Templemore to Ballinacally ; Sub-Constable John Sheridan from Thurles to Ballina (joint station) ; Sub-Constable P. Clare Journal 18 Dec 1876 Sub-Constable James M'Cormink, of the Royal Irish Constabulary, O'Brien's Bridge, County Clare, has retired from the force on a pension of £58. Constable Macnamara, Ennis and Constable Nicholson, Kilkee were amoungst the successful candidates of Dublin last week for the rank of Head Constable. We congratulate both on their advancement. The people of Ennis are well pleased at Mr. Macnamara's promotion and only regret that such necessitates his removal from their town. They will miss his portly form, and as well, his good natured joke, which on all ocasions he had ready for gratuitous circulation, ever new and varied. His courteous and gentlemanly bearing to all while strictly performing his duty at the same time won him many friends. Being four years in the County Inspector's office, the duties of which he was the most efficient in, he is eminently qualified for his advanced position. We feel sure that Head-Constable Macnamara will continue in the future, as in the past, a terror to evil doers and a friend to all those who live within the law. We feel sure that the inhabitants of Kilkee entertain the same good will towards Head-Constable Nicholson. Declan
Curious is the differences in shooting scores between new and old weapons. While in the army at ranges of 100, 300, and 500 yards with an M14, I scored 279 out of a possible perfect score of 300. Anything above 210 was classified as expert so I got a medal for that which I still have.
