Come on Paddy, I am waiting for you to get to mine. OK, I'll do it for you. :-) John Kelly born Meelick Co Clare served in the 1st Bn 1st Foot Regiment discharged 1843 aged 36. More Militery info. Enlisted at Cashel Tipperary on 15th December 1825 aged 19 years Dischrged at Templemore 25th July 1843. This man was discharged on a Pension of 8p a day, he was suffering from Pulmonary Disease. John Kelly died in Tasmania in 1875. OK, Why am I telling you all this. Well, from the information not unlike that which Paddy has provided, and through a military Genealogist, I was able to ascertain, that this man was my Great, Great Grandfather. The military genealogist came up with the details of four soldiers from Ireland that could have been likely candidates for being my ancestor. You do know how hard it is to sort these Kelly's out. Through a process of elimination we were able to reduce the list to one man who was in the right place at the right time. This John Kelly had a son born in Scotland around 1840, at a time when the battalion was in Gibraltar. John had been asigned to the Depot company after his return from ten years in the West Indies. One of the other candidate John Kelly's had lost a leg and we are pretty sure that my John Kelly had two sound legs to travel on to Australia, as convict Guard. He arrived in 1850 aboard the ship the Nile, and was granted a plot of land in Longford Tasmania. So, Paddy's info is a kicking off point for a military Genealogy search. Oh there is one other thing. If anyone else thinks they own this John Kelly, I would like to hear from them as I am still half a family short. John Kelly had four or five sons when he arrived in Tasmania, and I have only located the family lines of two. Cheers & Best wishes Paul Kelly Melbourne Australia. -----Original Message----- From: irl-clare-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-clare-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Padraig Mor O'Gealagain Sent: Tuesday, 28 November 2006 6:13 AM To: irl-clare@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-CLARE] Clare Soldiers in British Army - BARRY DAVID BARRY Born KILLALOE, Clare Served in 2nd Foot Regiment Discharged 1823 aged [Not Known] Covering date gives year of enlistment.
