Clare Journal 11 Aug 1842 New Arms to the Constabulary The Constabulary of this county have been served out with very neat new percussion carbines, and the old flint ones have been taken into store. The new ones are about an inch shorter in the barrell, but the bayinet is more that two inches longer than the old ones; the carbine has a spring attached to the back of the barrel which effectually holds on the bayonet, and also a spring attached to the bayonet which secures it in the scabbard and prevents it being easily drawn out except by the wearer. - Longford Journal. Clare Freeman 16 Oct 1858 Mr. Chartres Brew Most of our readers are aware that Mr.Brew, whose affecting narative of the burning of the Austria has excited such general attention, and which will be found in another column, is a native of this county and son of the late Tompkins Brew Esq., and nephew of William A.Brew Esq., J.P., Ennis. Mr. Brew, who had such a providential escape in this instance, was appointed to the constabulary a number of years since and was stationed in Kerry and afterwards in Clare. When the war with Russia broke out, Mr.Brew went out in the Commissariat Department, and was amoung the last of the British forces that left the Crimea. In that campaign he discharged his duties in a very satisfactory manner. On his return he resumed his rank in the constabulary, and was stationed in Cork when he recieved a telegram from Dublin Castle a few weeks since requiring his attendance in Dublin where he was informed that the Government had resolved to organise a police force in British Columbia, and, considering him a fit and proper person to take charge of it, he was offered the appointment. He immediately proceeded to London to recieve official instructions from Sir. E. Bulwer Lytton, Secretary to the Colonies, and it being necessary that he should proceed to his new sphere of duty at once, he took passage in the Austria, it being the first vessel ready for sail. We refer our readers to his own narrative for an account of what subsequently transpired. We sincerely congratulate Mr.Brew's friends in this county on his remarkable preservation.
