Thanks for the thorough background on the Clare Planning maps, Larry. Farmers sons are not allowed to build on their own farms ? You failed to add that farmers are no longer allowed to cut turf from their own bogs to burn in their own fireplaces. Midnight ramblers in rural Clare may be disconcerted by encounters with furtive figures in pitch darkness in the middle of the bog. They are farmers illegally cutting a little of their turf for the home fire. The uniformed men standing on the edge of the bog with night vision equipment are the GardaĆ, out looking for farmers illegally cutting a little turf for the home fire. You should read the text in conjunction with the maps in order to established what is allowed under the different headings. County Clare has what is called a development plan for the total area: Then the county is sub-divided into: North Clare, South Clare, East Clare, South Clare Economic Corridor, Ennis Environs Plan & Kilrush Plan. All County Clare is now what we call zoned: Zoning dictates what type of development takes place in different areas. Firstly each Village will allow for lands to be developed as housing, community (schools etc.), reserved for infrastructure (road widening, water treatment works) or other settlement land. Generally you are not allowed to build in the Countryside and you are encouraged into the Towns & Villages. Unfortunately the infrastructure are not in place in the villages. Find that difficult to understand , these plans are causing untold grief back here in Clare (Farmers sons are not allowed to build on their own farms).
