    3. Sharon, Thanks for your guidance with regard to the above. I may be some way to blame with regard to the current posting. Eric is the treasurer of Clare Roots Society and has done great work since becoming treasurer. I have been pushing local member here in Clare to engage with the list in order to help and get help from the Clare Diaspora. Only last week at my presentation to this group I again opened up the details of Rootsweb.com to the group. Please be patient ( enduring trying circumstances with even temper, tolerant: understanding) with current entries and if people can help please add to our knowledge back here in Clare. In addition I would hate to see this current exercise to turn into a protracted battering match. Lets all keep up the good work. "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country". King regards, Larry (back home). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharon Carberry" <sm8carberry@comcast.net> To: <irl-clare@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 11, 2006 10:17 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-CLARE] Carroll guidance and look-ups >I am trying to sit back and not say anything, because this is the season of > good will. 3. Good to know more about Eric's inquiry and its origin, Larry. I want to support your efforts at stirring interest among Clare residents in pursuing their family history and in using the Internet to connect to us who are Clare descendants no longer in Ireland. In this instance, the info being posted was so piece-meal that injecting encouragement to consult a pro is really the nicest thing that I can do. Those who have done Mass. research are familiar with the good facilities and with the ones which are not much worth the effort. I have heard complaints about the Mass. Archives for years, so I have avoided the place myself. One of the best facilities, the New England Historic and Genealogical Society in downtown Boston has not been mentioned - with three floors packed with films and books, as well as helpful staff members visible at all times, it is an excellent place to use. Just as descendants outside Ireland tend to rush to use the Heritage Centres when first wishing to know more about their Irish ancestors, current residents in Ireland may place too much importance on these Rootsweb lists as a source of useful, perhaps even comprehensive information. I am, as often posted previously, a proponent of a family historian reading up on the jurisdiction involved in research. Just as there are great books on doing Irish research, there are excellent guides on how to approach gen. research in the U.S. I am listing some of those below, in case the Clare Library may wish to include one in its collection for the benefit of Clare residents. I think these Clare lists are a wonderful resource when, after knowing the basics of research in a particular place and having done initial research, a family historian needs to compare notes with others in order to better evaluate data and determine what next to consult. I also happen to know how very knowledgeable and motivated a researcher that Dennis Ahearn is, although his rate is a bit steep. One efficient paid search may be worth the expense, rather than following well-intentioned leads here and there over a period of time. With that I will get off my soapbox. Sharon C.
