    1. Re: [IRL-CLARE] I wish I had an Alanna....

    3. I was some place and happened to talk about family history and a couple said that they were stopped by a problem.  I asked what it was.  Seems that a family only had money to send one person away.  They chose their son.  He sailed away and was suppose to get off at some US location.  For some reason as too many people were trying to land there, so he was refused to land and being a child, how could he defend himself?  He went on and was "dumped off" some place in Canada.  A couple living there was kind enough to take him in.  He took their last name and forgot his original name.  Whether he really forgot, they did not know.  He was a young child and may just have forgotten.   When people left, they did not have time or money or could not read/write back to their home.  And how would anyone deliver it to Ireland???  I think that happened a lot in my family.  Or there could have been a resentment that they had to leave their home.   I knew that my grandmother's father was a Callahan and was in MO, USA.  I found a couple of people, before all the Census' opened, who knew who his parents were and his grandfather.  This grandfather came from Ireland and his wife from PA, USA.  No way to know where in Ireland and where she came from or her name.  Unless someone knows, Irish records do not help.  But the year for them would have been in the 1700's meaning no records. To: [email protected] Date: Monday, May 16, 2011, 7:12 PM Ah yes!! We too only have sketchy information about great grandfather William Francis Quinn who came from Clare in 1868 at age 6. We can find nothing about him until he married in North Andover Mass in 1884.  His parents were Henry and Annie Melia Quinn. My mother used to say they were from Cork although my siblings claim that it was corrected to be Clare... Maybe the Ennis area. Of course all the census and other records say only Ireland... I started the genealogy of my family shortly before my Father died in 1966, unfortunately he knew little of his Carmody family, I guess from what hi Father had told him. All he actualy knew was the Carmody's came from Clare, but no location. I managed to finally find my grandfather's place of birth on British census, DENIS Carmodyand found his parents, Denis and Johanna Carmody saying his Father was born in Cork, 1825, Mother in 1826,Cork, but no maiden name for her, of course you know that is little info to go on. This was back around 1999, after trying to find some info over 30 years, I "finaly had that, and thought it would be easy from there.HAH! I am still looking for where in Cork, have written to churches and got either no response or names of other than the name I am looking for, which is Carmody,Carmoody,,Karmody,Kermedy, depending on who is checking and how it sounds to them, I guess. I have a friend, in Kanturk, who has asked the RC church for info several times even after I wrote with donation and got no answer. She has been given the run around by the ladies who answer the phone in RC church of Kilbrin, more than 6 times, priest not available, leave a message, or told no records available there. She has even driven up from her home, to find the office closed. I am trying basically to find the info on Carmody family, who did have a young man Patrick Carmody born  and baptised the in about 1845, which I also tried to get the info about, as I suspect he may be a cousin,or uncle of my Denis Carmody, who would be my great grandfather. ( I hope someone understands this) I suspect after much searching of Griffiths and the tithes papers that the orignal Carmodys' who wound up in Cork for work , came possibly from Tulla, Kilkee, or Kilrush, maybe even Ennis.since they do hav a main street named Carmody. Since Griffiths and the Tithes books do have Carmody' s in that locations how would I find th families or those listed? A researcher I hired 10 years ago has had no luck either. Suggestions appreciated. I did manage to get  copies of phone books for both Clare and Cork and wrote each Carmody a letter , got  three answers out of hundreds sent, with no matches, have joined sites and genealogy  sites even Ancestry for awhile and No match to my family at all.
