After leaving it in the "too hard" basket for a long while, I am returning for another look at the origins of Catherine LEADER. Catherine arrived in South Australia as an 18 year old domestic servant travelling from Co. Clare as an "Assisted Immigrant" under a "Remittance Order" on the "Escort" which had sailed from Liverpool on April 20, 1859. According to her marriage registration (July 28, 1863) her father was Martin LEADER, and her age was 21. She died on June 4, 1909, and her headstone gives her age as 67, which matches the age given on her marriage rather than on her passenger record, but not too different. I have so far not discovered any family record of her date of birth, and there are only vague family stories that "She was Catholic", and that "She may have been an orphan, with the family wiped out by the potato famine". Everyone here who actually knew her has now died, and there are few written records, although I have found a couple of photographs. I have found a reference to Martin LEADER in Griffiths Valuation (page 159), tenant of George TROUSDELL in a Townland in Cloghleagh. The land had a rateable value of 14/- and the buildings of 6/-. There are some other references in Dublin, but none I have found in Clare. The 1825 Tithe Applotments do not seem to have a reference to Martin LEADER, but there are many references to a name "with 5 others", or "with 9 others", so he or the family may have been there then. Does this ring a bell and fit with someone's tree or can the wisdom and experience on this list help to point me in a direction to start my search please? Robert SLATER South Australia
