    3. Judie, Would you check your 1901 census data about John & Maria Moloney and Mary Pilkington? Unless I've hit a wrong button, I couldn't find any of them. Let me know of any variant spelling or age differences. I did find a John and Maria in 1911. Did he retire to farming? Peter

    3. Judie, No specific details, but a few suggestions. Firstly, were Michael and Hanora in 1901 and 1911 census. That should confirm how many children and how many living. Secondly, with the scarcity or records you need to get maximum advantage from every little clue. Irish Civil Registrations rely on registration district rather than townland or parish. So get a district for births of Marian and John. It could be they married in the same district. Look for any other Moloney event in that district. Also you don't get spouses on marriages. 1911 census will tell how long they've been married, so give and idea of the year. Find John and then search for Maria using that date and district. That should give her maiden name. The same with Marian. To me it looks like her married name was possibly Pilkington. Check that in 1901 and 1911 census. Also try find their marriage and any other children. Using Civil Registrations on Family Search you should conceivably be able to find deaths of Michael and Hanora and also marriage for their grandchildren That will give a wider array of details on which to expand your search. Use those details to check for submitted trees on Ancestry. It seems a lot of work, but it does produce rewards. And much more satisfying when you do it yourself. Unfortunately it doesn't always lead to reconnecting with relatives. Peter

    3. Tony, Do you have the exact shipping details? Have you looked for original documents rather than just extracted index data? I believe they are in Victorian State Archives. I live in Sydney, so have never been able to access them. I've seen the NSW equivalents which are brilliant sources of data, especially for assisted immigrants, which most were. Depending on the date, early Port Phillip (Melbourne) arrivals were kept in Sydney. There are two sets of papers, the shipping line and the papers relating to assistance. NSW Archives has recently digitised the shipping papers. But you need to look at both. Many you will find on Ancestry. Somewhere in all of that you should find an townland and perhaps names of parents or relatives in Australia. Peter

    3. Could anyone on the list offer me any suggestions or information on the following? Anthony McGRATH and Ellen McNAMARA. They lived in Clare. The family belief is that it was Kilrush. They had five children who migrated to Australia in the 1850s and married there. These were: c.1819 Susan (m. William Doherty) c.1820 Patrick (m. Catherine Normoyle) c.1824 John (m. Mary Watson) c.1830 Jane (m. John McNamara) c.1838 Bridget (m. Michael O'Grady) It is believed that there were other children who went to the USA. Tony O'Grady Melbourne.

The townland is undoubtedly Knockballenameath, located less than a mile east of Parteen, likewise lies along the north bank of the Shannon ......and also in St. Patrick's civil parish. I'm not sure about the "registrar's District of Cooleycasey". I don't know anything about these districts, but the townland of Coolycasey is located in Kilfinaghta civil parish, about 7 miles to the NW of Parteen and Knockballenameath. Seems quite a distance to me. Pete - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts </HTML>

    2. The Tithe Applotments on the National Library site don't show any Anthony McGraths in Clare but there were 4 McGrath entries for Kilrush--James, John, Connor, and Michael (1826), perhaps relatives of your Anthony. There were four McNamaras there too. Best bet to look for the younger children's baptisms on the Kilrush/St. Senan's records, filmed by the LDS back to 1827. 3. Would there be a list or something similar re: Public House ownership in the mid 19th century in Ennis Town?   I am seeking information re: a Margaret (Fitzpatrick) DALY who is listed as having a Public House in 1856 on Mill St.  This could be my g g grandmother.   On the 1864 Civil Birth Certificate for Helena Mary TOWNSEND, the first child of my g grandmother Honora  (DALY) TOWNSEND, the birth address is Mill St. and the person reporting the birth is Margaret DALY.  Would like to know if this is the same woman.   Also, Pub probably long gone, but on our next trip over, would like to check this area out.  Since this is in a town, an actual address might be listed for a place of business/Pub at that time.   Mary Ellen Chambers

    1. [IRL-CLARE] FW: Rankings of names per parish - Surname Mapping County Clare
    2. Larry Brennan
    3. UPDATE: Clare County Library have confirmed that they have been in a position to develop this new service. As I understand it the new surname mapping should become available later this year (2013). Jim Mc Namara has forwarded the following information: Grenham Irish Ancestors CD also has a tool to intersect surnames. It is not on the site but does provide the parish names where two surnames are found together and the number of families each. Here is an example of what is on Irish Times site. : http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ and then: - Click on Roman Catholic Parish Maps - Select the county of choice then the RC parish of choice. You will then see the record references. Under the references you get a link to click on that reads: - "Click here for a listing of placenames within this parish." Then you get a listing of the civil parishes with the RC parish, you click on the civil parish. The more is the adjoining parish names, Map ID number, and references you can buy for not much money. I would suggest that the web site is all you really need unless you want to find where two families are in the same parish. I haven't found that in the website yet though it may be there. I've done surname ranking by filmed parish records for Feakle (Marriages & Baptisms, 1860-1880) and for Scariff & Moynoe (Marriages 1852-1881) [Baptisms not complete yet for Scariff/Moynoe] Here is the table for Scariff marriages which I've posted online at Clare Library site. This was a complete transcription and may not be perfect but all records were transcribed though some names in any record may have been unreadable. There is also an all persons-placenames index here. http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/bmd/marriage_rec ords_scariff_moynoe_rc.htm Marriage Records for RC Parish of Scariff and Moynoe, 1852 - 1881 Ranking of Spouses' Surnames 30+ McNamara-MacNamara-Mac-Mack (32), Minogue (31) 25-29 Tuohy-Toohey (26) 20-24 Obrien (23),McMahon (22), Molony-Moloney (22) 15-19 Burke-Burk (16) 10-14 OFarrell-Farrell-Farrel (13), OCalaghan-OCallaghan-OCallahan-Calaghan-Callaghan-Callahan (11), Hogan (11), Corbett (10), Sheedy (10) 5-9 Brogan (9), Griffin (9), Noonan-Nunan (9), Rogers (9), Roughan (9), Conway (8), Malone (8), Slattery (8), Bleach (7), Dillane (7), Ryan (7), Doudle-Dowdle (6), Morony (6), Reeves-Ryves (6), Coffee-Coffey (5), Collins (5), Crotty (5), Dillon (5), Durac-Durack (5), Flanagan-Flanigan (5), Fennessy-Fenessy (5), Guerin (5), Hackett-Hacket (5), Haran-Haren-Harran-Harrin (5), Kennedy-Kenedy (5), Mulcahy (5), Riordan-Ryordan (5), Torpy-Torpey (5) 1-4 Boland (4), Brady (4), Cooney-Coony (4), Curran (4), Curreen (4), Dinan-Dynan (4), ODonnel-ODonnell (4), Flannery (4), McGrath (4), Hart-Harte (4), Jones (4), Kelly (4), Madden (4), Mungovan-Mungavin (4), Sullivan (4), Walsh (4), Balton-Bolton (3), Beston (3), Broderick (3), McCarthy (3), Clancy (3), Cleary (3), Duggan (3), Gleeson (3), Hayes (3), Horan (3), Hynes (3), Keane (3), Lynch (3), Power (3), Reddan (3), Sheridan (3), Smark (3), Tracy-Thracy (3), Bolton (2), Boyce-Boice (2), Brislane (2), Bunch (2), Canny (2), Carolan (2), Carroll (2), Conry (2), Craven (2), Daffy (2), Danaher (2), Davis (2), Dooly-Dooley (2), Doyle (2), Dwyer (2), Egan (2), McGennis (2), Goonane (2), Goony (2), OGorman-Gorman (2), Grogan (2), Guilfoyle (2), Halloran (2), Hanrahan (2), Hickey-Hickie (2), Kilfoyle-Kilfole (2), Leonard (2), Long (2), Melody (2), Miniter-Minniter (2), Mylan (2), Patterson (2), Perrill (2), Nugent (2), Reidy (2), Salmon-Sammon (2), Scanlon (2), Shanahan (2), Sheehan-Sheahan (2), Steward-Stewart (2), Ward (2), White (2), Wiley-Weily (2), Aburton (1), Barrington (1), Bennet (1), Bordman (1), Breman (1), Bugler (1), Campbell (1), Cosgrave(1), Costelloe (1), Comber (1), Connors (1), Culligan (1), Curry (1), Curtin (1), Darcy (1), ODea (1), Delany (1), McDermot (1), Dolan (1), Donnellan (1), Downes (1), McElligott (1), Finlay (1), Fitzgerald (1), Fitzpatrick (1), Flemming (1), Flynn (1), Garvey (1), Gaynor (1), Grady (1), Grennan (1), Gunning (1), Hagerty (1), Hallinan (1), Hannon (1), Harhan (1), Hartneidy (1), Hehir (1), Hennessy (1), Hill (1), Hopkins (1), Houragan (1), Keogh (1), Kerns (1), Laurence (1), Lenihan (1), Lohan (1), Lyddy (1), Lyon (1), Malley (1), OMara (1), Mason (1), Morrissy (1), Mullen (1), Mulley (1), Mulvihill (1), Nash (1), Navers (1), Neylan (1), McNurry (1), Parker (1), Purcell (1), Quigley (1), Regan (1), Ringrose (1), Rochford (1), Ronan (1), Scott (1), Shaughnessy (1), Shea (1), Skehan (1), Thornton (1), Tobin (1), Tubs (1), Wall (1), Watson (1), Welch (1) Here are the tables for the Feakle marriages.baptisms from the same site: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/bmd/marriage_rec ords_feakle_rc.htm SUMMARY, not sorted: Feakle RC Parish Marriage Records, 1860-1881 Title: Marriage Records for Feakle R C Parish Type: Marriage Records Dates: Sep 21, 1860 through Feb 24, 1881 (Complete) Place: Feakle Parish Main Family Names: (See alphabetical list below for complete list.) For example, towns & townlands as found in the main records: - 1820s Tithes - 1830s Tithes - 1851 Townland index from 1851 census - 1855 Griffith's Valuation - 1885 George B. Handran's Townlands in Poor Law Unions (my favorite as each SRD-Union is only a few pages and is subdivided by E.D., Barony, then Parish, then the townlands in the parish) - 1901/1911 Townland index from 1901/1911 censuses (not sure these are available but could be pulled out manually. I would expect this to be held by NAI but may be non-existent.) I tend to do this in a rough fashion for my area of interest when I transcribe a register just to have a list of possible placenames. Sometimes, even estate names are found. Lewis Topographical Dictionary could also be used as a source. There are other sources too such as Pender's census and even directories could be used. Even townlands mentioned in petty sessions; court records though incomplete provide a view into how people spelled the townland name at various times. Some are recorded in parish records too and can wildly vary in all the sources such as Feakle-Feikle-Teakle; Cloontyconnaught-Clounty-Clonty-Clontha; Lecarrow Lower-Lacarrow Lower-Laccaroe Lower-Lakaroe-Lackaroe-Lackarow. Some townlands disappear too over the records and are only found in older records and early civil registration.

I just transcribed the townland of Poulawillin ca 1863. http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/clare/land.htm The film goes later than 1863, but I only copied this one section for this Townland. You can compare changes against the 1855 valuation: www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/griffiths_parish/kilfarboy.htm More to come... Christina http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/

    3. From 1901 census, James Sullivan was born c1838 and Mary O'Brien c1841. I've previously posted that James Sullivan married Mary O'Brien on 9th Feb 1864 in Milltown Malbay. His father was Thomas Sullivan. Her father was Michael O'Brien. But I don't have the mothers. I've just received the following new information on baptismal sponsors of the children of James & Mary. One would suspect that any Sullivans or O'Brien sponsors might be brothers or sisters, or other relatives of James and Mary. Baptism Year Sponsor Given Est Birth John 1871 BELLETT Catherine 1853 Bridget 1866 HENNESSEY Bridget 1848 John 1871 McCARTHY Michael 1853 Thomas 1865 MORIARTY Michael 1847 John 1869 O'BRIEN Connor 1851 Thomas 1865 O'BRIEN Margaret 1847 Bridget 1866 O'BRIEN Patrick 1848 John 1869 SULLIVAN Margaret 1851 Patrick 1874 SULLIVAN Mary 1856 Patrick 1874 SULLIVAN Thomas 1856 Mary 1877 WHITE Patrick 1859 Mary 1877 HEHIR Catherine 1859 Ann 1880 Patrick 1862 Ann 1880 WHITCOMB Mary 1862 I've assumed sponsor had to be over 18 and estimated birth dates accordingly. I wonder if anyone can recognise any of the sponsors and possible links to Sullivan & OBrien families in the area. I know Michael Moriarty married Ann Murray and came to NSW. He also sponsored the 1885 migration of my Bridget Sullivan b1866 to Sydney. I don't know if he has a direct family connection. I'm working through looking for submitted trees, civil registrations and census records for each of the sponsors, but it's a slow process and I'm not having much success. Peter Booth

    1. [IRL-CLARE] From Larry Brennan: Need Help with Burial Information
    2. Christina Hunt
    3. This was bounced for unknown reasons so I am resending it to the list. admin -------- Original Message -------- Subject: FW: FW: [IRL-CLARE] Need Help with Burial Information Judie, I asked Paddy Waldron who is a member of Clare Roots Society and familiar with the East Clare area to comment on your request. In addition he has recommended forwarding your queries to Michael Mc Namara in East Clare which I have done. Regards, Larry. Hi Larry I eventually found Rea Mason (mistranscribed thus) in 1911 with his widowed sister at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Limerick_No__3_Urb an/Denmark_Street_Lower/628508/ She was at the same address in 1901: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Limerick/Limerick_No__3_Urb an_District/Denmark_St__Lower/1499326/ and I think I found him in 1901 at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Limerick/Limerick_Urban_No_ _2/King_s_Island/1498400/ Bridget was widowed but still called Mason in both censuses, so presumably married someone with the same surname as herself. A labourer who died in the workhouse is unlikely to have a tombstone, or at least unlikely to have an inscription. As a single male he is likely to have been buried on Bridget's instructions either with their parents or with Bridget's husband, but he is unlikely to have had his name added to the relevant inscription, if there was one. Not surprisingly, he doesn't seem to have an obituary or funeral report in the Limerick Chronicle at http://www.limerickcity.ie/Library/LocalStudies/Obituariesdeathnoticesetcfro mTheLimerickChronicle/ The Limerick Leader 1905-2004 is now at irishnewsarchive.com and should be checked for the relevant week, just in case it has a death notice for funeral report. Mount St. Lawrence is the only graveyard with registers that he's likely to have been buried in, and he definitely isn't recorded there in the month given for his death. As he was from Denmark Street, there may have been a funeral mass in St. Michael's, but I doubt they were keeping death registers back then. There are lots of other graveyards in and around the city where he might be buried - Killeely, King's Island, Kilmurry, etc. \pw On 2013-01-02 23:26, Larry Brennan wrote: > Can you throw any light on attached. > > Larry. > >
