    3. Beryl, It is Breaffy South and North. Barony of Ibricken. Parish of Kilfarboy. Union of Ennistimon. The Electoral District is Miltown Malbay. These are done by Electoral District. So, to find them, you need to look for the Electoral District. Christina. 3. Peter, The map numbers are the Ordinance Survey map numbers. You can get a feel for these by searching places at: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=placeSearch You can pull up a place name like Poulawillin and the parish which is Ibricken. This will give you a hit with links to a map. Click on the map and then hit the plus resizer to get very close. Now you will see the maps divided into property with these numbers. I am not great with maps but have found a few I was looking for using the maps on www.askaboutireland.ie Each page we are transcribing gives all the info on the place name. In the case of Miltown Malbay it says for instance Leagard North Town of Miltown Malbay Main Street I can send you an image off list so you can see what it looks like. You get the large landowners as Immediate Lessors in places. Often the same person. We just added the page for Carrowkeel and the owner was a Sir Edward Fitzgerald. As time goes by you see more place where the owner may be the person living there. Then it says In fee meaning he owned the property. Hope this makes sense. Just woke up. 3. Hi Bernice, Thanks for your advice. The Kilkee and Kilydysart records look as if they could be worth a try. I was also interested in your Crotty reference. Two of my great great grandparents were Timothy BYRNE and Margaret CROTTY. I found the baptisms of some of their children in the Kilrush records (one of the witnesses was Honorah CROTTY) and they were listed as living at Glin/The Glin. I believe that they may have been the family of Timothy BYRNE and his seven dependants evicted in October 1848. I also believe that one of their daughters, Joanna (1842-1927) was living with, and related to, John CROTTY and his family at Lissinaire, Kilmihil, at the time of the 1901 census. The only Crotty in Lissinaire on the Griffith's Valuation in 1855 was Michael CROTTY. It seems possible that he was a brother, or some relation, of my great great grandmother Margaret CROTTY. Does any of this suggest any link with your Crottys? 3. PJ, I've learned something new. I'd never heard of Passenger Lists on Family Search. But I see they are there. Not sure how comprehensive they'd be. I'd recommend you check Find My Past for Passengers Leaving UK 1890-1960 and also the submitted migration extracts at Clare Library site. You might also try Googling "Cymric 1912" I don't think any site can claim to have every record and there will be errors, omissions and deceptions. I know a lot of Ancestry transcribers dittoed down the whole page, so everybody appears to come from the same place. You need to look at the images. And there are often two or more records. In my own case, I couldn't find an arrival in Australian lists but I did find him in Find My Past's departure lists. Peter

    1. [IRL-CLARE] Missing shipping lists
    2. Brenda Pilson
    3. There are a number of reasons why someone would not show up in shipping records. 1. Records were lost or destroyed or became illegible 2. People didn't have passports and didn't have to prove identity so may have travelled under another name. If a child travelled with another family maybe he was listed under their name. I am missing 2 ggrandmothers arrival into Melbourne in 1850's I suspect 1 travelled with her sister under their mothers maiden name & the other is on a passenger list that did not survive Regards Brenda On 22/01/2013, at 4:58 PM, Loralee Wellington <teacher.mom@sbcglobal.net> wrote: > But why would he not be listed on any ships lists? >

    1. Re: [IRL-CLARE] Potential misleading passenger-list entries
    2. Peter, To clarify, the image I gave the URL for was at Ancestry, and I found it easily. It was for an image of the original passenger list, not a transcription. Ancestry's description of the database is: "About Boston Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1943 This database is an index to the passenger lists of ships arriving from foreign ports at the port of Boston, Massachusetts from 1820-1943. The names found in the index are linked to actual images of the passenger lists, digitized from National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) microfilm series, T843 (rolls 1-454) and M277 (rolls 1-115)" But I got my original photocopy of the list back in the 1980s, when I spent hours at the NARA archives in Fort Worth, Texas, scrolling through reels and reels of microfilm. It's a huge photocopy, but I keep it because it was such a wonderful find at the time. So, the "do" was not a transcriber's work, it was the work of the person who originally wrote the passenger list. About Familysearch.org's passenger lists: I went back and tried to find this particular list by various search terms, and didn't find it. So I don't think their database has the same coverage as Ancestry's. PJ > I've learned something new. I'd never heard of Passenger Lists on > Family > Search. But I see they are there. 3. Sorry Pam. Family belief is that our McGraths came from Kilrush. However, I have just discovered that there is no trace of them in the St. Senan's records. We do have early documents stating that they were from Clare but we have not been able to find any shipping arrival records that might give us more detail. I will let you know if we make any further progress on the Kilrush issue. 2. Christina Hunt
    3. We have added Leagard South (ca 1863) to the Land page for the Clare IGP archives. You can see the page from the Land index. http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/clare/land.htm The asterisk * means that on the original the name above was scratched out and a new name was written above. This means a new tenant came in for whatever reason -- maybe death or moving. That is what makes the canceled books interesting. Regards, Christina

    1. [IRL-CLARE] Potential misleading passenger-list entries
    2. Hello List, Many of you have probably come across a case like this one, but I'll post it to illustrate some challenges I've had with passenger-list data. This is a page from a voyage on the SS Cymric, leaving Liverpool 1912Aug17 arriving Boston 1912Sep5. http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=8745&iid=MAT843_183-0212&fn=Julia&ln=Plunkett&st=r&ssrc=&pid=1589587 Sorry, but I can't find this voyage at Familysearch.org First, notice all the "do" meaning "ditto" entries on the page. The recorder was obviously allowed to use this shorthand freely, and in this case did so. It might have been used especially when the recorder was in a hurry, which would make errors more likely, resulting in a piece of information being erroneously recorded as the same as that on the line above. Now notice lines 21 and 22: "Plunkett Kathleen, do Julia." These are my ancestors. Julia Plunkett was born in Kingstown, Co. Dublin in 1888, the daughter of Andrew Plunkett, who died two weeks after Julia was born. Julia's mother later married John Carey, and their daughter Kathleen Carey was born in 1892. Kathleen was in fact Kathleen Carey, not Kathleen Plunkett. And in the "nearest relative" column (11) Kathleen's father is falsely listed as "John Plunkett." I've come to believe that these Plunketts and Careys often used whichever surname they thought would create the fewest questions from officials. Julia and Kathleen were bound for Julia's brother Thomas Plunkett's home in Lowell, MA (col. 18). I've wondered if Kathleen decided to use the Plunkett surname just to make sure it was clear that she was heading to a close relative already resident in the US. Could there be another explanation for her not using her birth surname? I've also been told that some (perhaps many?) Irish people were accustomed to giving false information to authorities out of an abundance of caution and a fear of official malfeasance. Surely some of them carried this practice/secretiveness with them as they traveled away from Ireland. An example I've been given is a person's claiming to the Irish census-taker/collector that she did not read or write, when in fact she did. Does anyone know how an older passenger list was prepared? Was it usually made on land beforehand, perhaps when the booking was made? Or was it made as passengers boarded the ship prior to departure or even after departure? Some time ago I asked the Ellis Island people what a black line through a passenger-list entry meant. I was told that it meant the passenger did not make the voyage. That would suggest that the list was prepared beforehand. I've just sent an email to historycenter@ellisisland.org asking for information about the process. PJ, in Texs

    2. Peter R Booth
    3. Catherine, The basic difference between Digest and List mode is that Digest put a number of posts into one email. That means you have to snip your replies so that you don't repeat everything and focus on the specific message of interest. It also means you have to watch subject lines when replying. You'll see that I've changed the heading to reflect name, date and location. As to your query, strange as it may seem, I think you may find more data in Australian shipping records than looking for Irish BDM records. I can't comment on Darby and Jeremiah being the same person, but the place for SA immigrations is The Ships List. You find it using Google. The search facility seems to have been updated just last month. Although Moloney from Tipperary is for another list, you might like to try Tipperary Immigrant Index. Before 1855, Victorian arrivals were centrally recorded in Sydney. If you check NSW Indexes Online you might find images of he shipping record. This and a second image may also appear on Ancestry. It's important to look at both. I prefer teaching people to use Google to search for sites and results. An essential site with links to all Australian sites is Coraweb. I've been using it for nearly 15 years, and I haven't yet visited every site listed. Peter

    3. My thoughts are vague on this info and it will take a little digging to find out when the following occurred. Some of our Crotty family records that we thought should be registered at St Senan, Kilrush were actually recorded in the Kilkee church records. Maybe you need to broaden the search to neighboring churches of St Senan. Bernice Hassett
