    1. [IRL-CLARE] AUSTRALIAN IMMIGRATION RECORDS
    2. Peter R Booth
    3. People need to be aware of the difference between Indexes and Digitised Images. About two years ago NSW released digitised images of original records for Assisted migration. And despite their site saying 1838-1896, there are actually images from 1828. Queensland Archives have recently done the same, but I'm not sure if they've finished. South Australia don't yet have images, but they have recently updated search facility on The Ships List. Unfortunately, unless something has happened recently, there are no online digitised images for Victoria. So I'm guessing you can only view them at Victorian Archives Office. For NSW, Ancestry has two sets of images. One is the same source as NSW archives, but the other has much more data. You need to look at both. Just don't believe their transcriptions. Almost every one I've seen has dittoed the top place of origin to everybody else on the page. Also note that until mid 1850's everything was centrally recorded in Sydney. So check NSW archives for early arrivals in Victoria or Queensland. Peter

    3. Jackie, Did you see a reply to a similar question yesterday? You might like to check the archives. The answers should be in immigration indexes. The trick is that up to 1855 they were all recorded centrally in Sydney, so appear in NSW State Archives. These are now digitised, so you can look behind the indexes. If you can access Ancestry either via subscription or free access at a local library or FHS centre, you should find a second set of images with even more data. For the benefit of all, can I say that a good way to learn about available resources and solutions is to look at responses to posts of other people. Peter in Sydney (Happy Australia Day)

    2. I don't see Coleman in either the Tithe Applotments (nationalarchives.ie) or Griffith's Valuation (failteromhat.com), so your best bet may be to print out the names of the civil parishes in which Maloneys and McGanns both appear in either the Tithes or Griffith's and then search the corresponding Catholic parish records. 3. Lyn, If you follow my suggestions, you will find a Michael Grady arriving 1854 on both NSW Indexes Online and on Ancestry. My worry is the gap in both time and distance between 1854 arrival in Sydney and 1862 marriage in SA. You should check NSW BDM for possible marriages or death. As I said, Ancestry has two images. Both have mistranscriptions and both have extra data. Look at both. I believe he came from Kilfenora in Clare. He might also appear in emigrant lists at Clare library, but I don't think that will have much detail. I don't want to suggest possible answers based on family stories and be found wrong. He could have arrived as crew in Adelaide the week before his marriage. They may even have met on a boat. There's lots to check and eliminate. I also want you to enjoy the thrill of discovery and the reward for effort.. Peter

    3. Lyn, I keep saying, you'll probably find more detail in Australian records than looking pre 1864 civil registrations in Ireland. Presumably from his Australian marriage and death records you have Michael John Grady born c1831 with father Patrick. I'd first try to pin down migration records. If it's NSW, use Indexes Online. If it's SA, try The Ship's List. You might also try convict records if that's a suspicion. If you have an Ancestry subscription or can get access via a local library or FHS centre, an historical records search should find him. All the above sites can be found by a simple Google search. Otherwise try my favourite Australian site www.coraweb.com.au. Make sure you look at all original images. NSW Indexes online has them digitised. Ancestry has two different images. Don't believe their transcriptions. Look at originals. You should find lots of extra clues. And make sure you try O'Grady as well. Look also who, if any, might have accompanied him. There may also be some clues in naming patterns of his children. Many things to consider. And a bit of work to be done. Peter

    3. Hi all, hope someone can help find the roots for this family as we're travelling to Co Clare from Australia in May this year and would like to absorb the countryside of his birthplace (if we can find out where it was!). Michael John Grady born about 1831 arrived in SA sometime before his marriage to Mary Anne O'Loughlin in 1862. He put Patrick as his father's name. He later became known as O'Grady. Family knowledge has it that he was born in Waughty Park county Clare but is there such a place, is it Aughty? He also said he landed in NSW and found his way to SA. If this is true, he may have been a government sponsored immigrant and had to work two years before being released. He possibly landed in 1854. Alternatively he may have been a convict (haven't found his name on the list) whatever we have little to go by. He was a labourer / publican. He and Mary Anne settled in Macclesfield in the Hills, sheep and wheat country but by 1874 moved to an industrial/workers' suburb of Adelaide called Thebarton with a family of 11 or 12 children. Nearby was a brewery and many small businesses. Knowing names may give a clue, there were names like Michael, Denis Francis, James Francis, Elizabeth Ellen, Patrick John, William, Edmund, Lawrence and Michael John. His fourth son, publican and bookmaker/horseowner. Michael John born 1874 is husband's line, he married Nora Mary Durkin in 1907 and only had 3 sons including my father in law. My research found that during land clearances in Ireland many families were pushed into the woods of the Aughty, am I correct? If I was to visit, would I see any of the ruins of the villages in the Aughty? regards, Lyn O'Grady
