Hi Mary Ellen Just a thought, but have you tried searching the National Library TROVE newspapers, in case there was a mention of the families or the Townsend marriage or death? http://trove.nla.gov.au/ "go to digitized newspapers and more" Cheers Joan I was very fortunate to be given a stack of family letters written from 1913 to 1919 from Australia to family in OH who were emigrants from County Clare Drumline area from 1850 to 1900. The surnames of DALY, MURPHY, and PYNE are referenced. DALY family were in Ennis Town, Mills St. area and Smithstown Barony of Lower Bunratty. MURPHY is linked to a daughter of Thomas and Margaret nee FITZPATRICK DALY but have no given name. Her son Michael born circa 1870 was in Sydney in 1914. His last letter to his cousin in Cleveland, OH was 1916 shortly before her death. He talks of WW I and being unable to leave OZ to come to USA or return to Ireland D/T shipping/travel restrictions to leave. PYNE is linked to MURPHY & DALY because of an inheritance of a man with surname PYNE in Clare who expired circa 1916. Michael's mother is to inherit from his will. I have searched through Ancestry and Familysearch for Michael Murphy, his civil birth in Clare. Death in Clare of a man with surname PYNE for above listed timelines without any luck. Do not have his father's given name but had hoped his mother's DALY surname would be listed. Also have been unable to find a marriage record in NSW for Wm. Thomas TOWNSEND circa 1919 to 1945. I know when he returned to OZ after being wounded in France WW I, he was not married at that time. Thus the 1919 start. He expired in 29 June 1955 and is buried at Rookwood Cem. RC section but can find no reference to a wife. Could anyone in Australia with Clare connections have any suggestions??? Mary, There's just to much for one post. I suggest splitting your post into four - DALY, MURPHY, PYNE & TOWNSEND. Then elaborate on each family. Who was the daughter of Thomas Daly & Margaret Fitzpatrick. When and where was she born. Did she marry Murphy? Who was the Pyne who died in 1916. Are we looking in NSW or Clare. There's only one male death in 1916 in NSW. There's so many places to look for William Townsend in NSW. If he enlisted in Australia, you'll find his complete WWI dossier at http://naa12.naa.gov.au/Login.htm. There's 20 marriages of William Townsend on NSW BDM but only one William T. It's probable he married Nellie Lawes in 1923 at Sydney, but it would need further checking. Unfortunately Trove newspaper obituaries generally stop 1954, the year before he died. You could check Rookwood RC cemetery website to see if anyone else is buried in the same or adjacent grave. I'd also check Australian Electoral Rolls on Ancestry. While NSW only start 1930 you should find spouse and possibly adult children living in the same household. Peter
Hi, His death certificate would give his wife and childrens names as well as parents if known. Google NSW BDM to find all the details included on a death certificate. Regards Brenda, Melbourne. Peter~ Yes, we have his COD which does not mention a wife. He was a RR Fireman in the USA before going out to Australia in 1913. He is/was RC but may have changed to C of E. His father was English Protestant/C of E and mother Irish RC. I will have to go the file cabinet but think the hospital was Lipscomb (SP?) and cause was arterial stenosis of which there is a family history. The relative who had the letters in Chicago, said they were donated to Woodsend Historical Society. We have found them such a peak into an Australian family pre and during WW I. So glad that they were given to Oz. The last my Dad knew of him was during WW II when he contacted family to see why he was no longer receiving his RR pension. Nephews checked it out to find that no monies were allowed to be sent to Australia during WW II for fear the Japanese would get it. The pension with back checks started again after the war. Peter~ Good suggestion. I was so overwhelmed with this treasure of letters, that my thoughts may not have been as organized as they should. Also was relying on Ancestry and LDS. Now know there is a Australian BMD on line, plan to use it for other ancestors we're seeking. The 1916 expiration for ? PYNE was in County Clare as best I can discern form the letters re: the inheritance. Thank you so much. Appreciate your input. I realize this is Irish list but... looking at the book listing let me just say that any of Rutherfurd's books are great historical fiction. If you are in to English history Old Sarum --Salisbury, and London are equally as great. Douglas Burnett Satellite Beach FL In a message dated 6/4/2013 3:02:10 A.M. I quite enjoyed Ireland: Awakening by Edward Rutherfurd, it’s quite detailed as to the history and covers down the turbulent centuries of Cromwell, the Ascendancy, and the Famine to the Easter Rising and the Irish Free State. P.J. I really enjoyed Malachy McCourt's History of Ireland Its more like a collection of stories and reads pretty easily and yet covers a lot of time and ground. He more or less keys on specific people and the events around them. On the marriage certificate it states his father was Patrick. On his death certificate it states he was born in County Clare, Waughty Park is how it is written, possibly how it sounded. We are currently on holiday in Ireland staying near taungraney and will visit the research centre tomorrow. It has been suggested by the locals, when I mention the birth place, that it might be Waterpark, the old farm of the O'Gradys of long ago. It is just out of Scarriff on the theakle road. We went to look today, there seems to be a tower there, beside the river, where the playground is today. Is that what people refer to as Waterpark? If it is then it is more than we would have expected from our visit. We only expected to absorb the feel of the area that he came from. We only have one more day in Clare.
