    3. Margaret, I think the surname comes up fairly regularly. I'd suggest you search the list archives. Another site I'd check is Clare Library. http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm Sometimes even Googling the surname brings surprising results. Peter

    1. [IRL-CLARE] A Hehir or O'Hehir family from County Clare
    2. Margaret Wise
    3. This is my first query on the mailing list. I would like some information, if possible, about a family name O'Hehir from County Clare. The members of the family that I have some knowledge about are Ann O'Hehir, aged sixty years, Bridget O'Hehir, aged 20 years, Margaret or Mary O'Hehir, aged 19 years and Honora O'Hehir, age unknown. Each one of these ladies were on the convict transport, Earl Grey, and disembarked at Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land. They were convicted of stealing and/or receiving two cows on 27 February, 1849 at Clare. Each was sentenced to transportation for seven years and they embarked on the Earl Grey at Kingstown, Dublin arriving at Hobart Town on 9 May, 1850. They O'Hehir women committed their crime during the height of the Great Potato Famine and, luckily for all but Honora who died on the voyage, their arrival at Hobart Town was the beginning of a new life. Bridget and Margaret married and produced large families. What happened to their mother, Ann is unknown. Looking forward to receiving some information. 3. Hi, Many O'Hehirs dropped the 'O' so you have to look at Hehir and Hare as well as O'Hehir and O'Hare, Hehir is very common in Co. Clare so have you searched all documents that might identify the parish or village - marriage and death certs, cemetery records and inscriptions ann possible newspaper obituary, Declan P.S. 'The Clare Journal' might have had a report on the court case. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Margaret Wise" <madge47@netspace.net.au> To: <irl-clare@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 20, 2013 9:29 AM Subject: [IRL-CLARE] A Hehir or O'Hehir family from County Clare > This is my first query on the mailing list. 2. Terry O'Callaghan
    3. Thanks Diane and Peter for your assistance. Further information on the O'Callaghans and Fennells arriving in Adelaide as follows: Patrick Fennell sponsored my Great Grandfather Patrick O'Callaghan who arrived at Adelaide on the Sir Thomas Gresham ship on 19 March 1854. Patrick O'Callaghan's wife (Johanna nee Hartigan) had arrived earlier on the ship David Malcolm listed as Johanna Hartigan and was also sponsored by Patrick Fennell. It is thought that Patrick O'Callaghan and Johanna Hartigan had married in Ireland before departing for Australia. On the shipping list for the Sir Thomas Gresham ship Patrick O'Callaghan was listed beside John O'Callaghan who is possibly a brother of Patrick O'Callaghan. Patrick Fennell married Mary O'Callaghan on 19 June 1848 at Adelaide and they had 6 children Stephen, Denis Eugene, Honora, Thomas, Eugene and Mary. It is possible that Mary O'Callaghan was Patrick O'Callaghan's sister or a close relative. Mary O'Callaghan arrived at Adelaide on the Britannia ship on 24 October 1846. Patrick O'Callaghan's sponsor to Adelaide, Patrick Fennell, was 25 years old when he arrived at Adelaide on the Duke of Roxburghe ship and embarked with his father (Stephen Fennell age 45 years) and mother (Margaret - nee Downey age 44 years) and siblings on 26 July 1838. Patrick Fennell's siblings that arrived with him were Dennis, Stephen, John, Mary Ann and Thomas. The Duke of Roxburghe sailed from Portsmouth (England). A lot were destroyed in a flood of the Torrens River. Do you have the name of the ship? Were there others from Clare aboard?. When did Patrick Fennell arrive? From what you're saying Mary O'Callaghan married Patrick Fennell and her brother Patrick O'Callaghan married ???. Unfortunately, I think you'll find more in Australian records than you will in Ireland. Look for death records of both couple or you may need to buy death certificates. That should give parents. You can try Clare library, but most of the record only give heads of household rather than family groups. And because births and marriages predate 1864 civil registrations you need to know a townland, religion and parish before looking in Ireland. And in most cases it requires a personal visit to Dublin or paying a local researcher. Also check migration lists at Clare Library on the off chance somebody has transcribed any SA passenger lists. 2. Thank you Diane. I have another branch of family that I traced back to visiting Chicago at that time. I called the Church (St Marys) where the memorial is at and they have no record of anyone being buried by that name there either. I'm not sure how to proceed from here I have so many brick walls and I'm spread thin. Oh another thing I found out by talking to a secretary at the church was that the memorial was paid for by a woman in another town who's last name wasn't Casey, a bit of a mystery. There are other names on it as well. On one side it says "James Casey died Dec. 1868 age 55 yrs", "Margaret Casey died Mar 14th 1913 age 85 yrs" then " Erected by his wife Margaret Casey Born in Parish Killshanney Co. Clare, Ire." on the back side it says "Thomas Lacey under that Michael Lacey" "Ann O'Connel under that James O'Connell 1864 - 1899". Last of all on another side "James F. O'Reilly 1876 - 1854 Margaret T. O'Reilly 1871 - 1948 Esther M. O'Reilly 1905 - 1946" >From all the local sources I have determined that Margaret Reagan/Regan was Patricks mother oh wow I'm sorry I've just discovered on his marriage cert his father is recorded as Daniel Casey so his father is most likely " Daniel at Ballygoonan, Kilfenora, This is what happens when you try to do too many things at once. Warm regards, Clara " John probably went to Chicago in the 1890s for the same reason my grandparents did, it was a boomtown, the fastest-growing city in America after it held the World's Columbian Exposition. Not all deaths were recorded. I'd put more faith in the memorial too. Diane"

Cork. I'm a map freak, so beforehand I bought and for months pored over the Ordnance Survey maps for those areas, having enormous fun planning our daily car trips around the regions. Just last week I unpacked some of my memorabilia from that trip. Among those things were all my Irish OS maps. On deciding what memorabilia I could bear parting with, I found myself saving the maps and discarding much of the other stuff I'd collected and carried around with me as I moved house several times since '84. My point: If you don't already know about these maps, I urge you to consider buying the relevant ones for your trip. They come in several scales. I especially like the 1:50,000 scaled ones -- they have details that I've never found on any maps for the U.S. A Web search tells me that the Irish OS maps are available at http://www.osi.ie/Home.aspx . I believe the Discovery Series maps are in the scale I liked best, and that maps 51, 57, and 58 cover Co. Clare. In a quick Web search I didn't find anyplace in the US that sells the maps, but maybe someone else can suggest a US source.
