    2. Edna Burns
    3. The information I have is: James Long. Mary Fiztjarris (? spelling as read from obit) LONG, born in Ireland, living in New York in 1854. MARY LONG, daughter of above, born in Randolph, New York in Nov. 1854, died 1911, Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri JOHN BUTLER, born County Clare, Ireland in 1839, immigrated to New York in 1860, married MARY LONG in the 1860s when Mary was very, very young. Died in Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri in 1920 KATHLEEN BUTLER, born to John and Mary in Buffalo, New York in 1880. JOSEPHINE BUTLER, born to John and Mary in Buffalo, New York in 1881. CLARA AUGUSTA BUTLER (my Mom) born in Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri on July 12, 1890. Other siblings were JULIA,  MARY and FERDINAND.   These are locations and dates taken from obituaries, death certificates, etc. I do have a copy John Butler's application for Citizenship dated sometime in the 1880s in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, but the date isn't clear. It was among his possessions at the time of his death in Sedalia in 1920. I have applied for final citizenship papers and received three "possible" ones but they tell me there is no way to guarantee it is my John Butler.   Hope someone sees a connection here!   Cheers, Edna in Kansas Edna Kelley Burns A friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart. 3. Hello Joan Have you thought about DNA testing? I would suggest a Family Finder test,www.familytreedna.com. It is my hope that we will eventually be able to link some of our families together in Ireland this way, given the absence of paper records, but we need more people to test. I am starting to develop some possibilities for my own family this way. Interestingly for me I have ancestors SWEENEY and HANRAHAN both from county Clare, most records suggest Moyriesk or Clooney. We do have HANRAHAN cousins in Tulla Clare. HALLORAN and HANRAHAN could possibly be variants, you never know! I have had a second cousin from this line tested, I live in hope we can find someone else out there we similar ancestry that matches us both so that it can help to break down out brick wall. Any SWEENEYs and HANRAHANs from County Clare who see this post please also consider testing! Regards Veronica also in NSW Australia, mother named Joan! We also have some Hanrahan cousins in QLD.

    1. [IRL-CLARE] ROLL CALL <Chicago Torpeys>
    2. Listers, My wife's great grandfather, John Torpey, came from County Cork and settled in Chicago. I do know that the maiden named of the woman he married and later divorced was Donoghue - no forename is known at this time. That is basically all the information I have on him. I do not have any dates of birth or time when he emigrated. I know this is very limited information, to say the least. The woman he married left him and the children. John then left his relatives to raise them. He had 3 sons and 1 daughter - Tim, Joe, Will and Sarah (Sadie) Torpey. I am wondering if there is any connection to my wife's great grandfather. 1. Re: [IRL-CLARE] Roll Call - GORMAN/O'GORMAN
    2. Looking for where in County Clare these Gormans came from: John O. Gorman (born abt 1820) married Mary Quealy in Albany NY Michael Gorman (born about 1827 in County Clare) married Ann/Nancy Murphy Margaret Gorman (about 1830) married Patrick Quealy Margaret's sister, Mary Gorman (about 1825) Also hoping to find the names of the parents of these folks. (Gorman was used in the earlier U.S. records - some of the sons went by the surname O'Gorman.) These Gormans emigrated at the time of the Great Famine, and spent a few years in eastern U.S. states, NY, PA and NJ. These families arrived in MN Territory in about 1855 - the couples claimed farms in Eagan Twp., Dakota County, MN. Mary Gorman never married and was living on the Patrick Quealy and John O. Gorman farms in various censuses. The Quealys came from a farm just north of Lissycasey. A descendent of John O Gorman reported that the family came west as part of a "colony" of County Clare people. If so, the "colony" may have included Bartholamew Daly (abt 1832 in County Clare, claimed farm in Eagan Twp.) and Cornelius Cleary and his wife, Bridget Eagan, and their adult children from Clondagad parish, claimed farms in Credit River Twp., Scott County, MN. In 1870, the John O. Gorman and Bartholamew Daly families migrated to near Perham, Otter Tail County, MN. Another Gorman family that settled in Eagan Twp. in the cluster of Gorman family farms was Patrick Gorman and his wife, Nancy Mehan or Maher. Patrick's brief biography includes: "[he] was born in Ireland in 1831, and when eight years old his father died, and two years later Patrick came to America with his mother. They landed at Quebec and went from thence to Rouse's Point, New York, living in or near the place four years. Our subject resided in many different places in that State, including Binghamton, Great Bend. and New Milford, until 1835, when he removed to Scranton, Pennsylvania, and engaged in railroad work one year. In 1856, he came to this State, located in Eagan town, Dakota county, and for nine seasons was engaged in boating on the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers. He served in the late war from 1864, until June, 1865, in the Tenth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, Company K. In 1870, he bought one hundred and sixty acres of land in [Wheatland township, Rice County, MN], moved his family here and immediately began making improvements." One source reports Patrick's parents as Patrick Gorman and Bridgette. Not sure if he was related to the other Gormans or if he came from County Clare. Yet another Gorman in the MN territorial census for Eagan Twp. was Margaret O'Gorman (about 1834 in Ireland), the wife of Patrick Quigley (born about 1823 in County Kilkenny). 1. [IRL-CLARE] McMAHON
    2. Marg Watson
    3. Dear Listers, My entry in the Co Clare Roll Call is the family of Michael and Anne (nee Collins) McMahon, from Ballycorey in the parish of Templemaley. Five of their children came to the Victorian goldfields: Thomas McMahon married Honora Hartigan in Barefield in 1854, three weeks before sailing for Australia. Also on board were several of Honora’s siblings. Mary and Ann McMahon travelled with Thomas and Honora, on the Coromandel, arriving in Adelaide in January 1855. They later travelled to the Bendigo goldfields in Victoria. Patrick McMahon came directly to Melbourne on the Lady Milton in 1857 and then on to Bendigo. Catherine O’Brien (nee McMahon) came to Bendigo in 1885 as a widow. Her husband was John O’Brien from Cappagh Beg. It is reasonable to assume they would have had a brother Michael, named after their father. Also, each sibling named one of their daughters Veronica. My guess is the five who came out to the goldfields left behind two siblings Michael and Veronica, who perhaps had died or who decided to remain in Ireland. I would love to hear from anyone researching this family, Marg Watson, Bendigo, Victoria.

    1. Re: [IRL-CLARE] ROLL CALL: MALEY GREEN/E
    2. Hello All! My gg grandmother and grandfather are married in New Haven, CT 22 Jun 1862: Mary MALEY and John GREENE. Mary MALEY shown as "Maley (Melia)" (exact) on her death certificate. Both listed as being from "Clare" on daughter's death certificate. Mary b. 1840-45 John b. 1839-42 Questions: When did they come over? Where to, exactly? What townland did they come from? Do I have any other living descendents from this line? Have done the usual research, looked the usual places. Problem is that the names are so common, when I find a Mary Maley/Melia, or John Green/e, I haven't found a good way of sorting out who's mine and who isn't. ----- Original Message -----

    3. Hi Joan Thank you for thinking of me, I did visit this graveyard many years ago and all here are in my family tree but regrettably none of them are in my direct line. I have included photos of the graves in the story of my family history but what a wonderful resource, I have also included photos of buildings which my ancestors would have known before they left Tulla about 1850. my great great grandfather Patrick Rochford was a hotel keeper and a photo of his pub is also included. I still have 'cousins' in Tulla and they have told me that the pub was known as 'Rochfords' for around 100 years after the family migrated, in fact up until it ceased to be a pub and in one of those six degree of separation things, the husband of my closest 'cousin' runs a pub in Tulla now all the best Patrick

Joan in Constitution Hill, NSW G'day All, and Thanks Christina Hunt for this opportunity and too for being such an astute IRL-CLARE list administrator, your work is very much appreciated... My, Our Family's quest for many a year has been a cailín by the name of Bridget MCINERNEY Our Bridget, at an age of 23, whilst living with her nearest relative, a brother named Michael, was tried in court in County Clare Ireland for the crime of stealing a cow, which was alleged to be either exchanged or sold for a candle-stick from an un-named person, her court hearing was on June 16 1849, and she was sentenced to 7 years incarceration in Tasmania. Our Bridget was transported on the ship Earl Grey, departing Dublin, December 17 1849 with 236 other women convicts and 76 children for the 143 day voyage to Hobart in Tasmania, embarking on May 9 1850. Once arriving it is presumed she was placed into the Cascades Female Factory to await selection by settlers and free persons to serve out her time as quite possibly a servant. Hobart was a rugged place in those days, indeed there were 48 breweries alone in town, a coastal and important Port of the antipodes reached mainly by sea they had many boat-builders and many ship wrecks. Sadly that is all the information I can provide, after years of researching there's not any scant bit of information left that I can research, the pot is bare... Ggrrrr I'm hoping someone else might be researching this specific McInerney family [I think searching for Smith's might have been more rewarding - LOL!!] quite possibly a bloke called Michael McInerney who had a sister Bridget, who was transported to AU ??? Best Wishes All, thanks for reading my quest details... Don Johnston in Melbourne AU

I am not familiar with "free" Irish genealogical sites, except those on Genuki; not that I want all my information for free but as I'm not doing this research for myself, but for our local historical society, I don't want to have to spend any more than I really have to. 1. Re: [IRL-CLARE] ARTHUR, ROACHE
    2. Diane Kennedy
    3. My great grandfather was Charles Arthur, he was born in Barfield in County Clare in 1854. (Civil parish of Doora, Kilraghtis, Templemaley) He and his brother James were both baptized in the RC Parish of Doora/Barfield. He arrived in the US in 1865 at Castle Garden. No family members were listed as traveling with him. His mother was Bridget Roache born about 1833, we believe her husband's name was Michael Arthur. As to date no marriage record has been found. There was another son,John, but no idea where he was born. Bridget settled in NYC, remarried. She died in 1884 leaving a will that stated she had three sons, Charles and John living in NYC and James who was reported to be in Australia. Bridget's obituary stated she was from County Clare. Her death certificate states her father was Thomas Roache and her mother was called Bridget. It is thought Bridget was a widow when she arrived in the US. But after 20 years of searching no boat record has been found. It is believed that she arrived about the time of her son Charles or before. She shows up in the 1880 census married to her second husband. We are not sure which church Charles was baptized in. The letter from the Heritage Center stated that the dates and parents names were listed, but that the parish priest was covering several churches at the time and had not listed the name. Charles father's name Michael was on the baptism record. In the Immigrant Savings Bank, Bridget Arthur (widow of Michael) is listed as having an account for her son James. This was in 1876. I have no idea what happened to John or James Arthur. My grandfather was Thomas Arthur, youngest child of Charles. Thomas and his siblings were sent to live with maternal relatives after their mother died and Charles disappeared. (1889) My grandfather never really spoke of his Arthur relatives, all his siblings were dead by 1917. If any one knows anything about this family please contact me. Thank You, Diane Arthur Kennedy

    3. Greetings from Sydney, I am trying to find more about the family of Winifred FRAWLEY born ca 1833 in Newmarket on Fergus. Father was Michael FRAWLEY and mother Mary (or Ellen) O'KEEFE. It is believed that Winifred emigrated to Australia on the ship Blenheim at the age of 20 in November 1853. There is a Bridget FRAWLEY, age 19 on the same ship, who is believed to be her sister but there is no proof of this. Any information regarding Winifred's parents and siblings are eagerly desired. 3. My gr grandfather William Francis Quinn was born in May 1862 supposedly in Clare to Henry and Annie Melia Quinn. He/they immigrated to the US in 1867/8 to where I know not. The the first real documentation is his 1884 marriage to Annie Teresa Coyle in Ballard Vale (Andover) mass. Annie was born in Ballard vale abt 1856 to immigrants John, son of Peter and Rose Gaffney, and Annie Caffrey, daughter of Owen and Ann Gibney Coyle. John and Annie had Ireland born Peter 1845 and Rose 1848.  I'd love to find out from where these families came and where in the states William was for 15 years. There's a Philadelphia possibility but those names are too common to take just a census list! Thanks and good luck to all Faye Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Smartphone

    1. Re: [IRL-CLARE] Roll Call - HAIRE/HAIR; BOLTON
    2. Judy Dumbrell
    3. Hello everyone, from Sunny, Wintry Newcastle in Australia. My brickwalls in Clare are: 1. Anne BOLTON arrived in Newcastle, Australia, some time before October 1856, because that is the day she married Charles HILL, a devout Catholic, from Selby in Yorkshire. She was illiterate and I have not been able to find her immigration record. Her death certificate states that she was from Co. Clare and her parents were Michael BOLTON, a farmer, and Catherine MCNAMARA. Anne was born about 1836. She and Charles HILL had 10 children and Anne died in 1899 of 'Fatty Heart'. I also found a brother for Anne in Newcastle - He was Michael BOLTON, born about 1840 in Scaraff, Ireland (Death certificate). His parents were Michael BOLTON, farmer, Catherine MCNAMARA. He married Catherine WALL about 1863 in Ireland. Both died in Newcastle 1911 and 1916 respectively. I am not sure about his immigration record either. I can find no children for them in Australia. 2. Hanora/ Nora HAIRE, HAIR and other variations She was born about 1829 Co. Clare - she next appears in South Africa, Cape Town, she is married there in 1851 to Richard CHADWICK from Tipperary and they have a daughter Mary in 1852 and she was baptised in Port Elizabeth. The family then went to Victoria on the 'Australasian Packet' and arrived there 12.7.1852 - I suspect he was looking for gold. A son, John CHADWICK, was born Victoria in 1854 (no record of his birth, probably on the goldfields) and in 1855 the family arrived in New Zealand on the "John Scott". I have no clues as to her parents names. She had a son John and daughters, Mary, Bridget, Agnes and Margaret. Not much to go on, I know. Nora CHADWICK died in April 1880, age 51, listing no parents, except to say her father was a farmer. To put a further spanner in the works, two of her daughter's death certificates state that her maiden name was CORBETT. One of those daughters on her marriage certificate 13 years after Nora died, said that CORBETT was her mother's maiden name as well. Everywhere else her name is recorded as variations of Haire/ Eyre... or not recorded at all - no record of the marriage in South Africa has come to light yet. I am hoping someone on this list may be able to help with my Clare brickwalls. Regards Judy
