Oh, I know, I know. You thought you were doing the right thing, practicing "tough genealogy". Steel them against the rough parts of the research so they'll appreciate the end results. But instead, it built up the resentment toward their whole history. If only we could work in the opposite direction: If only you could know where you came from "right away", you start with taking your kids to their ancestors' homeplace in a quaint village, maybe a rousing ceili at a cousin's house, exploration of a nearby folk park, then work forward in the research, showing those young upstarts the generations unfolding like a red carpet right up to their birthday... Sigh. This is probably why not very many young people are interested in genealogy and family history, I suspect. They are innately short-sighted; if the results aren't clear and immediate, the journey is just too hard. I have noticed very many the women on the passenger lists I look at seem to be listed as going to the US to work as a Servant and men as Laborers. This has my curiosity. I know my Grandmother, Catherine Kelly, came to Boston and worked as a house maid for a family on Martha's Vineyard. It was something she wouldn't talk about. I was told by my mother that is was a terrible experience for her and one she didn't care to relive. Was it still common in 1923 to have your passage paid in exchange to being a servant? It did list her "friend" in the USA as her aunt Bridget Mungovan of Lowell MASS (I am very lucky her passenger list is Typed!!! It also lists her father, townland and County) I guess I assumed her aunt "sponsered" her and helped pay to get her to the states, but maybe not. She did work for them for 7 years and then married (I believe in 1931 she married) so it makes me wonder if she was indebted to her employer. I found a site that lists advertisements for run away Irish Servants from the 1700's http://www.vcdh.virginia.edu/gos/inden_runaways_ads.html

Hi Marilyn, I am also researching the MCNAMARA of Co.Clare. My great grandparents were John MCNAMARA & Hanora CONOLE. My grandfather was Michael who married Mary GILLICK in New Zealand. There is a MCNAMARA and a CULLINAN connection somewhere. I am still trying to sort that connection out. I know it is like searching for a needle in a haystack researching the MCNAMARA family of Co. Clare but it is worth an ask. Helen McNamara New Zealand

Jeanne at socrates_399@yahoo.com writes: > I like the way you think, Sharon C. So, ah, tell me, who gets your research??? < Jeanne, That's a question I've been thinking about. Of course, in my case, I don't do any genealogy - Dad's done it all, printed 4 books on the subject, and even has two very-large LDS films (perhaps they're all that large - I wouldn't know) comprising his 10,000 or so (my guess) entries of MY ancestors <gr> - - - - - available from friendly LDS centers near you. And Dad's working on another supplement...... at 96. But I have tremendous numbers of maps - more than just Irish, hundreds of Irish books....... and about 12,000 books in toto. And, of course, thousands of photo negatives - over 4000 from Ireland alone. So what do I do with all of that? One of my granddaughters suggested converting my entire house into a public/private library. It's a possibility. With my parents only 11 months away from their 75th wedding anniversary, I hope I have a bit more time to decide. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts
Hi, Catherine, Thanks for your continued interest in the family history conference we've been hashing over for months. I have responses from 20 different listmembers in a separate folder. That could translate to 40, easily, including interested spouse/partners/siblings who would tag along with the listmember. Plus our committee and any locals, I'd say we would be looking at easily 60 people, and that's a very conservative number. I haven't even attempted a head count on the Rootsweb Clare message board, which includes posters who may not even know about this mailing list of ours. I think we are all in agreement that the numbers are high enough to warrant a family history conference, but the issue of a localised task force is still contentious. I've just sent an email to those NE Clare people who have only recently set up the website Sharon C. just posted about, www.aughty.com, and I hope to hear from them soon, as there is a meeting going on as I write this in Ennis between conference committee members. If we can get enough man- and womanpower behind the details of the conference, and if we can then feel confident enough in being able to pull it off physically and logistically to square away adequate financing, we're in like Flynn. Watch this space. Jeanne Catherine Eystad <cadybeth@gmail.com> wrote: Re: the conference. How many people did you find interested in attending when and if it is set up? So Pete, how many great-great-grandchildren do you have? :-)) Jeanne PeteScherm@aol.com wrote: Jeanne at socrates_399@yahoo.com writes: > I like the way you think, Sharon C. So, ah, tell me, who gets your research??? < Jeanne, That's a question I've been thinking about. Of course, in my case, I don't do any genealogy - Dad's done it all, printed 4 books on the subject, and even has two very-large LDS films (perhaps they're all that large - I wouldn't know) comprising his 10,000 or so (my guess) entries of MY ancestors - - - - - available from friendly LDS centers near you. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts ==== IRL-CLARE Mailing List ==== If you just want to subscribe to this list or unsubscribe from it, send e-mail to IRL-CLARE-L-request@rootsweb.com or (for the digest list) IRL-CLARE-D-request@rootsweb.com and put the word subscribe or unsubscribe in the message body. ============================== Census images 1901, 1891, 1881 and 1871, plus so much more. Sorry, Pádraig, but I pulled that reference out of my old computer files while doing a quick review for any Michael Carberry. My memory is that I found the reference on the LDS site itself, likely in the IGI section. However, since I have had that reference for a very long time, it may also be from the old days of the mid-1990s when I spent lots of time pouring over fiches and paper lists in LDS FHC facilities themselves, before so much came online. I have not tried to confirm the info in that reference, although the names and the date are very consistent with subsequent East Clare parish entries (particularly a baptismal sponsor named Peg Carberry, in the 1830/40s) and later Illinois records reported in my March '06 posting. This one reference is my only Molony. Dan, FYI, I have the following in my Co. Clare family list................ Finnucane, Bridget of Derry More, Co. Clare 05/19/1844 godparent to John Rohen/Roughan (my gr grandfather) Judie Mason Chicago IL danialw@execulink.com wrote: I thought I'd try again with a query on David Haskett and Mary Finucane. They were married at Killaloe Cathedral 1 Feb. 1812 after that they moved to Tipperary. I'm trying to discover their parents. The marriage licence bonds index says David Hastings to Mary Finuncane. I had one suggestion of Hassett but it doesn't work in this case. I would be more apt to think Hastings than Hassett. As for genealogy all of my neices and nephews want so they will get a copy. Some of us researching Ireland and England records for the years 1600 to 1775 are aware of Indentured Servitude. Official definition here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indentured_servant Very old newspapers from New England and southern colonies down to the Carolinas, are full of ads placed by business owners (not all English surnames) posting rewards in pounds for the capture and return of their Irish slaves. It seems reasonable to assume many of our ancestors were slaves at one time. These parts of history tend heat things up and keep our research interesting. Robert, Michael Carberry in this database appears to be the first mention of this one anywhere. I have been reviewing my old files stored on a disk, difficult to read due to old formatting. While I have two sets of material on men named Michael Carberry in connection with Australia, this one of this age from Clare is brand new. I think he may well be the brother of Patrick and Mary Carberry whose descendant is Robyn Maynard of Australia. I last communicated with her in 2004, when she was not able to do research. I'll try her again now, with this new information. Thanks very much. I have been getting bits and pieces of information about Carberry individuals leaving West Clare in the mid to late 1800s. There is also another Patrick Carberry, son of Thomas - that Patrick went to Western New York, where his family is well documented and placed online by a friend of his living descendants. The descendants themselves are not reachable. As you may be aware, my Carberrys were in East Clare, with no apparent connection to anyone in West Clare. I would love to compare research with the West Clare descendants, but I appear to be the only one actively researching. Thus, what you found is very precious.
