    3. Many thanks for flagging this info, Sharon. You and the other Clare Listers will have noticed that the article on the Bodyke evictions at www.askaboutireland.ie/ appears identical to the text on that subject on the Clare County Library website (posted there in early 2003). In fact it originated from the Clare County Library. It appears on a page of the www.askaboutireland.ie bearing the Library crest but I can't find an attribution of the text to the Library. What a pity. Anyway, the account is fascinating. Thanks also for the heaps of meaty stuff that you are contributing to this list. 1. Message for Declan Barron 2
    2. Joanne Mitchell
    3. Hi Declan, My email has been losing things and bouncing all over the place, so I'll re-send this via the list as I suspect you didn't get it the first time. No, I noticed that neither Brew nor Cusack appeared in the Encumbered Estate Papers. The reason for this I think is two-fold. Firstly, neither James not Thomas lived on the land(s) in question. There were several farms in the parish of Kilmurry Clonderalaw which they jointly leased, and leases seemed to change hands regularly. Secondly, I think both James Cusack and Thomas Brew were deceased by that time. The following Brew website has a number of useful databases. http://brew.clients.ch/brew.htm#Ireland Included is a death notice from 1808 which I believe refers to the Thomas Brew (of Carnanes) in question and a will for the same dated the following year. Furthermore, there are extracts of Deeds mentioning the Brew name. These (see the two I have copied below) provide the link between James Cusack and Thomas Brew. I suspect that they were brothers-in-law as the Killaloe marriage licence bonds show a marriage for a James Cusack and a Brew in 1790 which fits roughly with one of the deeds. There is no mention of James Cusack after the 1800 deed and he does not appear in the Tithes in his home townland of Ballynote, Kilrush, so on this basis I suspect he was also deceased. Here are the Deeds extracted from the above website : a.. Reg. of Deeds 462-127-294623 Registered 26 November 1792 by Thomas Brew Lease dated 12 January 1791, whereby Nicholas Comyn of Georges Square in the County of Clare, Esq., to farm let to Thomas Brew of Teghinogue, Co. Clare, gent., that part of the estate & lands of Moyne, known by the name of Dysartbeg, in as ample a manner as heretofore occupied by Laurence Ryan & partners & by James Cusack & his under-tenants, situate in parish of Kilrush, Barony of Moyarta, Co. Clare. To hold for lives of John Pilkington second son of Michael Pilkington of Dangananitty [Danganella?], gent., Robert Pilkington 3rd son of sd Michael, & of John Ryan, second son of Patrick Ryan of Corgreff, Co. Clare, farmer, and survivors of them, at £32-3-4 yearly rent. Witnesses to lease : Francis Daly & Maurice O'Connor, both of Ennis, gents. Witnesses to memorial : Francis Daly & Thomas Rumley of Georges Square in sd City, Esq. Francis Daly sworn at Dublin, 26 November 1792 a.. Reg. of Deeds 524-351-343127 Registered 14 January 1800 by Arthr. Brew Release dated 9 January 1800, between Arthur Brew of Carruneskey [Carhunusky], Co. Clare, farmer, of the one part, & Thomas Brew of Cahernanes [Carnanes] & James Cusack of Ballynote, both in Co. Clare, gents., of the other part. Reciting that Arthur was seized of that part of the lands of Carrubane, known by the name of New Park, as formerly held by John Hickman, & situate in Barony of Clondesala, parish of Kilmurry McMahon, Co. Clare, by virtue of lease made to him thereof by John Hickman, Esq., dated 25 April 1795, for 3 lives, & was also seized of the lands of Carrunusky [Carhunusky], situate in Barony of Clondesala [Clonderalaw], parish of Kilmurry McMahon, Co. Clare, formerly held by Mr. Justice McCarthy, under a lease dated 26 July 1795, from Thomas Henn, Esq., of Rook > Lodge, Co. Clare, for one life, & was also seized under a lease dated 22 March 1788, made by Crofton Vandeleur of City of Dublin, Esq., to him sd Arthur Brew, & others as joint tenants, of a part of the lands of Tullycrine [Tullycreen], situate in Barony of Clondesala, Co. Clare, for two lives, & that sd copartners had divided sd last mentioned lands & Arthur Brew had leased part thereof to Daniel Reilly. Witnesseth Arthur Brew for cons'on therein mentioned, released to sd Thomas Brew & James Cusack, sd respective farms during the leases thereof & all the tithe & claim of Arthur Brew thereto. Witnesses to release & memorial : Wm. Mansell of Denagrogue Castle, Co. Clare, Esq., & Thomas Wm. Macnamara of Rathkeale, Co. Limerick, gent., attorney. T. W. Macnamara sworn at Rathkeale, Co. Limerick, 10th January 1800 before Jonas Leake So, the reason I am querying whether you might have any detail to add, is of course the connection to the Kilmore Estate and the Hickman link in the second Deed. It seems to me that James (who is my main interest of course) was more than just a tenant farmer, so I'm hoping that might mean there are other documents around relating to him, hence my other email to the list yesterday about Cusack genealogies. Maybe I can find a clue if I work downwards. By the way, my interest in James is that there is a possibility he may have been either the uncle or grandfather of my Daniel Cusack/O'Neill. Daniel's father was a John Cusack. The only John Cusack I've found of a suitable age in Kilrush was a John Cusack of Ballynote whose daughter Margaret married a Reidy in 1834. This may or may not be the John Cusack who appears there in the Tithes and he could possibly be a son of James (although the Brew marriage is to late for her to be his mother, if that is the case), or even the Patt who also appears in the Tithes. All speculation at this stage. Anyway, thanks for your earlier reply. Let me know what you think. Cheers, Jo

    2. Great Sharon Thanks heaps for the advice. I am definately at the stage where I need to start researching "How To", so far I have been lucky with what I have found out. Helping out others with their enquiries is definately where I would like to be as I have received some fantastic help from others. Again thank you I will now start my research in earnest. 1. RE: [CLARE] DUGGAN and HANSON
    2. William Mann
    3. Monday, 21 August 2006 I have a James Hanson who married a Mary A. Duggan in 1857 in Wexford. James Hanson was born around 1825 and died in Wexford in 1902. Mary Duggan was born around 1830 and died in Wexford in 1908. They had children named Anastasia (b 1858), William (b 1860), Catherine (b 1863), Anne Elizabeth (b 1865), Mary Jane (1867-1930), James (1874-1964), and Christina Agnes (1877-1922). I know that your Duggan and Hanson tie was with reference to Clare, but I a wondering if there might be a Wexford connection? Bill -----Original Message----- From: Anne Hanson [mailto:ahanson8@bigpond.com] Sent: Saturday, August 19, 2006 6:38 AM To: IRL-CLARE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CLARE] John DUGGAN born 1833 Kilmichael Good Afternoon All I'm e-mailing to ask if anyone on this list is researching the abovementioned John DUGGAN whose father's name was also John and his mother's maiden name was COGHLAN (given name unknown). On John the son's death certificate, it states that his father was a gentleman. John (born 1833) died in Victoria, Australia in 1890 and I would like to learn more about his background in Ireland, for example his parents and his siblings. I have heaps of stuff on his life in Victoria which I would be more than happy to share. Many thanks. Anne Hanson Beechworth, Vic. Aust. -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
