Jeanne, You are doing for Foley what I have been doing for the past decade with Carberry, because I know that the Carberrys arrived in Clare no earlier than the late 1700s. The research is extending over a long period of time because there were two main septs of native-Irish Carberrys, one in Westmeath and one in Waterford. My approach has been a differential one: collecting everything I can on the native Irish ones (after learning that the aristocratic ones were Norman English, who were given confiscated Barony of Carbery lands in Cork and then assumed the name as their surname after so many years of being called Lord and Lady Carbery). and then comparing those details with my family's details. Even the latest Leeson list findings are helpful, since the Fox emigrants are shown as being from Ballymaconnel where my Carberrys first appeared in parish records (Fox is a common Westmeath name, not a Clare name, and my Carberrys used Peter and Thomas, which are heavily used in the Westmeath families). This research and anlysis will continue until I am satisfied that I have sufficient evidence to call it. So, I provided some background on the Lukey family, for which I know you have a similar Lukey-Foley connection from the Davoren materials, which, added to Declan's newspaper article on the same Basil Lukey, starts to gel as relevant and also to point to a potentially useful relationship of East Clare to the Kilrush area via the involved landlords or estates hiring local men. If you don't have data to analyze, then the analysis cannot occur. Unfortunately, definitive data in just one record source is hard to come by in Irish genealogy. If you find that it has no ultimate utility, just toss. At this point, though, you might want to find a Lukey will or two , or some other document relating to the second half of the 1700s, to see if you can catch Basil of Cork acquiring or disposing of property in Kilrush, and maybe bringing a Foley from a Cork estate to manage some Kilrush land. Back when we were discussing (offline) the Registry of Deeds films (via LDS), I meant to mention that the placename books may be hard to read as filmed but the surname indexes should be easy since the handwriting is so clear even back into the 1700s. I went to the link and searched the site in a couple of ways. There was a reference to a placename on the homepage in Bermondsey in London, a "Folly (or Foley) Bridge", and three individual's names in the database, with only Margaret Foley named by given name from Youghal, Co. Waterford. The other two included no other information other than who their spouses were, as related to the Lucey family. A search of this website for "Clare" didn't give me anymore indication, either, that these Foleys were connected to mine. How far afield does one look within reason when one knows that one's family must have come from somewhere outside of Clare? > > Jeanne > > Sharon Carberry <sm8carberry@comcast.net> wrote: Lucey and Foley of Kilmichael, Cork > http://www.rickmansworthherts.freeserve.co.uk/webpage36.htm > > Clare Journal 1813 > Dec 27 > Deaths > At Lukeville, county Cork, Basil Lukey, Esq., Attorney, late of Belvoir, in this county, aged 85 years > [posted by Declan Barron in '04] > > Belvoir is the big house on the eastern edge of Kilkishen, associated in the mid/late 1800s with the Wilson family. > > posted by Sharon C. > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-CLARE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > > --------------------------------- > Stay in the know. Mary K. Lund of Minnesota has provided her list of Clare emigrants which she made after obtaining the Leeson article about which I posted on 18 Mar 2003, 17 Apr 2005, and earlier this month. This list has opened up new avenues of research for me because, for one thing, I had never heard of the placename Munmore previously, which turns outs to be an East Clare location (as well as one near Kilrush, which is not the one involved with the Leeson list). Please be aware that there are seemingly unique locations on this Leeson list which are not so. In fact, there are extreme west and extreme east locations in Clare for many of the "unique" placenames. You need to analyze all the people involved with that placename before deciding the involved region. Also be aware that the spellings can be one or two letters different from the usual spellings, as used on the Clare library website or on IreAtlas (Sean Ruad database). For instance, Muckirish shown below is actually Muckinish, but there are several such places in Clare. The below one belongs to East Clare, as revealed by its high number (#44) in the original Leeson listing, which I duplicated in my earlier postings. I had asked Ms. Lund for the appendix so that I could cross-reference the numbers to the placenames in the appendix. Instead, she sent me the list which she had made, apparently having already done that. Very nice indeed, but you still need to check the original list to decide if the placename is in East, West, or central Clare. I will do a separate posting on some of those determinations which I made. Clare's county library website is THE BEST on the whole island, unmatched as to its free and vast numbers of databases. There is no need to be in Ireland in person to find a lot of information. In fact, although I have visited "home" on fived different occasions, the great majority of information I have about my Foleys hasn't come from those visits, but from researching from the comfort of my own home in Indiana, USA. I suggest you try out www.clarelibrary.ie, using the information already given to you in regard to your place names (Moyarta and Carrigaholt, rather than the spellings you've found), and see what shakes out of the bag. Once you've done all you can from home, which you haven't yet, then post again with what you've found and what you need. Good luck! The details I have are - Mary Ann Nora FOLEY b. abt 1826 Myart, Co Clare married Michael Martin COLLINS in Aug 1845 in Carrigohall, Co Clare. Michael was born abt 1825 in Myart, Co Clare. Mary Ann's parents were Michael & Honor FOLEY nee KANE. Michael's parents were Martin & Margaret COLLINS nee McGRATH. Mary Ann & Michael arrived in Australia in 1855, along with various members of both families. There is a story in the family which I have decided to research a bit further - and that is the family is from a Spanish background. I do know that Mary Ann was reputedly found frequently on the verandah in the rocking chair singing Spanish songs/song. Any advice or help on where to follow this family further would be greatly appreciated. This is my first foray onto Irish soil :-) Many thanks in advance Maria Thomas LAKE MUNMORAH, NSW ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-CLARE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-CLARE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-CLARE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-CLARE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-CLARE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Thomas Nestor Cloghleagh: Ennis Town: Drumbiggle Road Drumcliff John Nestor Lifford Drumcliff Bridget Nestor Lifford Drumcliff Bridget Nestor Lifford: Ennis Town: The Borheen Drumcliff I am still fighting with these NESTORS from the Griffiths Valuations of Ennis. I wondered if anyone could tell me anything about these addresses? Perhaps that would help me to get some kind of handle on them. The names are all the 'correct' names for my family, but I need to know more before I can honestly lay claim to them. Regards Margaret
Thanks for thinking of me, Sharon. I came across this note to myself while reviewing notes today and I pass it along, although it may have been posted to the list at some point in the past. I did not include any source for this info, and I have not checked to ensure accuracy. While there is nothing definitive about these findings, I do think there is a direct connection between the families named Grace who lived in Kilkishen (East Clare) and Coolmeen (West Clare, by Kilrush). At this time there are only indications of a common gene pool from which two physical traits are evident in the below records for those in both families: extreme height and a combination of blue eyes with light brown ("fair") hair. Not every Grace necessarily had both traits, as there were some men of medium height with the indicated coloring, and some tall men with black hair. (The first few listed below do not have physical descriptions.) I invite comment and further research. "Captain John Murphy is one of the oldest tug men in Buffalo harbor. He is certainly fully as well known as any of them, and his mind is replete with reminiscenses respecting the early navigation of the Buffalo creek and Niagara river. He is the son of Patrick and Mary (Donlon) Murphy, the former of whom was a carpenter by trade, coming from County Clare, Ireland, to America in 1848, and locating in Buffalo. Captain Murphy was born in County Clare, Ireland, June 29, 1847. He was educated in the public schools of Buffalo, and graduating from there he went to a farm in Allegany county, N. Y., where he remained about two years. His first enterprise in connection with lake traffic was the purchase of the ferry scow, with which he made a living for himself and parents, part of a season ferrying on Buffalo creek. During the season of 1861, he was fireman on the tug J. W. Peabody, following that employment by working the necessary number of years in the Bell and the Buffalo Iron Works, learning the trade. For twenty one years he has been either engineer or master of harbor and other tugs at Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago, New York and Baltimore, his last service being in 1884 upon the tug Dave and Mose, of which he was master and part owner. He has had pilot's license six years and engineer's papers ten years. He has been a member of the Local Harbor No. 41. Buffalo Harbor Master & Pilots Association since its inception. Captain Murphy married Margaret Higgins at Buffalo in April, 1883, and they have the following named children: Charles, George, Grace, Joseph, Alice and Gertrude. The family reside at No. 499 Fargo avenue, Buffalo, New York." end of article] http://www.halinet.on.ca/GreatLakes/Documents/HGL2/default.asp?ID=s882
"Captain Patrick Myers may be designated as one of the most vigorous patriarchs of the lake marine, and although seventy-two years of age retains all of his faculties to a remarkable degree. He ostensibly retired from active life on the lakes as master at the close of the season of 1896... The Captain was born on the banks of the river Shannon, in County Clare, Ireland, March 13, 1827, a son of Capt. James and Mary (Linane) Myers, and a grandson of Capt. Martin and Mary (Keaton) Myers. On the maternal side he numbers among his relatives President MacMahon, marshal of France during the Franco-Prussian war. The Myers family for many generations were salt-water sailors, and owned their own sloops. The father of our subject died on the Emerald Isle, in February, 1847, and in 1861 the mother emigrated with her family to the United States..." "Captain John Lysaght, keeper of the life-saving station at Grand Haven, Mich., during the last ten years has been uniform in his efforts to rescue life and to relieve vessels in distress. Always cool and collected in emergencies, his work has been well directed, and the results attained redound to the credit of himself and his brave surfmen. He is the son of Captain Richard and Catherine (Yore) Lysaght, and was born at St. Joseph, Mich., on January 7, 1854. His parents were natives of Ireland, the father of County Clare and the mother of County Meath. The title of Captain here applied to the father is a military one, and was earned during the Civil war. He had been a soldier in the British Army for four years, stationed in the West Indies and Canada..."
