Family lore has it that they came from Ennis. Certainly > Catherine and Mary Ann left from Ennis when they emigrated to Australia. How do you know for certain that Catherine and Mary Ann left from Ennis for Australia ? What year did they leave? Was it just Catherine and Mary who emmigrated, and do you know why - was there a cousin already there, or was it an assisted immigration scheme of some kind? What documentation, if any, do you have for the birth years ? And look at the disparity between the birth years you have. Putting aside the two unknown daughters - there is 10 years btween Catherine and Thomas! and a further 6 years between Thomas and Mary Ann! - not your typical Catholic family, as trends went. > > I paid for some research, but no matching family showed up. Research, as you know, is only as good as the information given to the researcher - if the info. is wrong, well - one gets negative results - who did the research? If it was undertaken by a Co. Clare heritage centre, then they would not likely have access to the records for Askeaton, Co. Limerick. If they were searching the R.C. church records of Ennis, for example, then records didn't begin until 1841, and even then many pages of old registers are either missing entirely, or soiled, torn, tattered or faded beyond legibility. > > The Griffiths valuations for Ennis have an assortment of the 'correct' > names, and none that don't fit. > Forget Griffiths, as its only value is in seeing that the surname was evident in a given place, and even if first names matched, one can not be absolutely sure of a match. Besides many people never made it onto Griffiths - there was a minimum valuation placed on a house for it to be considered for valuation; and for the many who were just lodgers they could not be included. > But; > > the only solid info I have is that Mary Ann was christened in Askeaton. Let's deal with the Askeaton aspect - This is a small point, but the word 'Christened' is generally used in the Protestant faith; whereas 'Baptised' is consistently used in Catholic records - is this a clue, perhaps, to their religious denomination? Very important, indeed, as to which church records to check. Anyway, please elaborate on the 'solid info.,' that you have. > > Also it seems that Bridget NESTOR appears several times as godmother to > Askeaton baptisms under both her maiden name, WALSH, and her married name. > (So my fellow-researcher tells me.) Aside from the question of how your researcher can assume it is the Bridget in question, the above line, in regards to Bridget's marriage surname, is contrary to traditional R.C policy. But, again, Askeaton, Co. Limerick appears - suggesting that the family was from Co. Limerick and moved later to Co. Clare. > > There is a John NESTOR at Shanbally, with a Lawrence and a Michael, but > the names Lawrence and Michael >don't appear among the descendants of the > family at all, which suggests to me that this is not 'my' John NESTOR. Again, this appears to be a Griffiths record, and of no real value. But I would not discount those first names that don't appear later in the family. In my family tree in Feb 8, 1818, there was a Laurence, a name that appeared again on Sep. 2, 1832 within the same family unit, as if the first born one had died, but the name was somehow important enough in the family to be used again for another. But since then, the name has never, ever, been used.- it was just a two-time occurrence. > My question is; Is there anything else I can do, any more avenues to > explore, or should I just resign myself to the idea that I am never going > to know any more than this? I would be really grateful for comments, and > suggestions. > Have you checked the LDS films of civil death registrations for both parents? Such records don't provide much information other than the year of the event; the cause; the place, and the informants names. But the place name might prove to be a good clue. That's to assume, of course, that the parents had died in Ireland. Likewise with the brother Thomas, have you checked civil registrations, again at the LDS, from 1845 (Protestant) or 1864 (Catholic) for his possible marriage? These are the only thoughts I have, Margaret. It's a shame considering the info. that you have that you can't presently expand on it. Hopefully, you will in the forseeable future. 1. [IRL-CLARE] A Fox hunt: good methods yield results
    2. Sharon Carberry
    3. Here is an object lesson which I experienced yesterday. The point of this story is that good research includes preserving information on both (1) the ancestors you know to be in your family and (2) other residents in communities that you research when they share characteristics of your ancestors. This is particularly true for Irish family history, but the experience yesterday involved my Luxembourg line, the ones who so often in U.S. records of the mid to late 1800s were shown as being German (because they spoke German). So, anyone of that era insisting on being noted as from Luxembourg or Belgium is significant. I dutifully noted such people when I was doing my New York research some ten years ago. The other critical activity which led to yesterday's success was my habit of visually scanning everything I find on the Internet to see if I can gain something of use from the webpage, no matter how improbable. I happen to have an ability to read material quickly to find particular words or phrases. I also keep in mind a large number of surnames, in my families' histories and some for other researchers as well. I keep ever mindful that new material comes online every day, so even if I have seen material in the past on a particular source, a new page on that source or an updated page previously viewed may now have significant new information. Yesterday I encountered yet another webpage on the Luxemburger Gazette, which had comprehensive coverage in the late 1800s of all Lux (and many Belgians since an 1837 treaty resulted in a large number of Lux.families being in Belgium territory) who came to the U.S., no matter how humble their circumstances. We who do Lux. research know about this source, although getting to the original newspaper articles is difficult since only very major libraries carry it. My eye caught the name Carels as I scanned the webpage containing some obituaries. I read (in German but online dictionaries abound) that the decedent's sisters included a Catherine Jerson. I already knew of this deceased man since I am in contact with his descendant, from the days when I was on the Brooklyn mailing list. There is already a known Brooklyn marriage between a Bretz of his line with a person in my maternal line (so directly related that I am not providing the surname). Now however my Brooklyn contact and I have another intermarriage, because this Catherine Jerson's only child married and lived out his years with my family's Margaret, in Kingston NY, some 70 miles north of Brooklyn. The point of this message, though, is the fact that I have been preserving the records of the only other Belgian woman in Kingston in the mid-1800s, an Anna Fox, too old to be the daughter of anyone whom I or my Brooklyn contact have been researching. What I learned last night when I contacted him about the obituary is that my Brooklyn buddy has the will of Catherine and Peter's sister which named this Anna Fox and her two daughters as beneficiaries because Anna is yet another Carels sister, without providing a placename for the Foxes. So, my Brooklyn buddy had no idea where to look for them, and I had them in their location but did not know the relationship. The Fox family lived in Kingston, always close to my John and Catherine Jerson. This story certainly has relevance to our Irish research, because, as I have seen in New York and in Wisconsin (where so many Luxembourg and Belgian families emigrated) is that these nationalities readily intermarried with Irish immigrants. I suppose that, not only sharing the Catholic religion, but also being farmers in underpopulated remote communities, the Lux. and Belgian families did not see themselves as being so German that they shared a prevalent attitude of that era, that the Germans did not mix with the Irish. Each nationality tended to have its own church and cemetery. It was so in Kingston, to a strict degree. I also have seen the Irish up and leave their farms after decades when they became far outnumbered by the Germans in Wisconsin. Thus the migration route carried on to Texas, the Dakotas, Washington state, Colorado, and California many years after the famine and initial settlement on owned property in Wisconsin. So, review anything of seemingly remote relevance, preserve as much as you can for those who share characteristics with your ancestors, share info with other family historians, and do not shy away from records (even if in a foreign language) for families with non-Irish names, because Irish sisters had to get married and they did marry non-Irish. I was wondering if you were familiar with the history of these towns and could perhaps answer a few questions about the existance of Kirby Swamp and Bent and Village Streets. Also with the change in boundaries with Franklin and the incorporation of E. Millis into West Medway? You can contact me on or off list. 3. Dear Kay, One has to take a chance. Here are some what I think are interesting examples. I was contacted by a B Sheedy because he had seem a post of mine. He is a relatively close relative and gave me some good information. But with his family, he quit working on our history. Another person did the same in contacting me. He had a letter written by my g grandmother here in the states to his relative. He could not believe that I would know who the people were in the letter. I most certainly did, even my mother who was then in the letter just a child. I just wrote about my Elias Kelly Callahan and this letter writer was his widow. My mother, my brothers and I were traveling in Alaska some many years ago traveling by train from Mt McKinley to Anchorage. We had spoken to an older couple for most of the 8 hours. At the end of the trip, they asked my brothers where they worked. To shorten the story, they worked in a location in So. CA. They were from the upper mid West as Michigan. It turned out she was the mother of their supervisor!! I took a work required course for 2 days 40 miles to the west of me. In the class was a woman named Coffey. I asked about her name. My mother's direct family names associated with other surnames for a couple hundred years in say the early 1700's in Virginia and NC to 1869. They were involved with the Regulator Movement in NC and with the horrible Gov Tryon. Some people left and went to Georgia and SC. Her husband's people were "my Coffey's" who went to Georgia. I am not related to them, but if one sees a Coffey and a Jones and a Watts, then those Jones' and Watts' are mine. One just has to take the chance and try to see if there is a connection. As with the train, if we had not sat near this couple in the mostly vacant train, if we had not spoken to each other, if the lady had not asked a question, we would never have known the connection those thousands and thousands of miles from each of our homes.
