This fellow was tenant to Mr. O'Grady, of Shorepark, and stole the two heifer cows, for which he had been committed, from his landlord, the morning before the fair of Spancelhill, and drove them beyong Ruan, a distance of twenty miles, and secreted them on the lands of Rathvergin, belonging to Mr. William Kenny. Here he supposed they were perfectly secure, and he left his son to take care of them, until he returned from the fair, where he went and spent some time condoling with his landlord upon the loss of his valuable heifers. Unfortunatly for him, during his absence, William Foulow, the herdsman of the lands, discovered the cattle ............ ......... conducted the thief and the cows to Port, the seat of Hugh O'Loughlen, Esq, who instantly sent him, in the custody of the Police stationed at Ruan, to Mr. Brew. Saturday last, the Rev. William Henry Stacpoole, was chosen Provost for the Town and Borough of Ennis, for the ensuing year. Sunday, the Lord Bishop of Killaloe, held an Ordination at the Cathedral of Killaloe, when the Rev. Thomas Brady was admitted to Priests Order; and Messrs. Richard Shirly Going, John Studdert, and John Lucas, to Deacons Order. - On the occasion, an excellent sermon was preached from the 14th c. Luke, 23d v. by the Rev. Mr. Davis, Chaplin to the Ld. Bishop. July 10 A wanton and shameful outrage was perpitrated upon the property of Mr. John R. McGrath, at his fields at Cahercalla, on Friday night, sixteen young ash trees being cut down and taken away. An inquisition was taken before Robert G. Greene, Esq., Coroner, on Friday last at Carhuenlogane, in the west of this county, upon the body of Patrick Darcy. From the evidence it appeared that the death of the desceased was caused by a beating he recieved at the bog of dereen, on the Wednesday before, from Michael and John Killeen. The former of those ruffians gave him a blow of a pitchfork upon the head, that knocked him down, and the latter, with inhuman barbarity, gave him, whilst lying senseless, a second blow which terminated his existance. The verdict of the Jury was to this effect. Both murderers have fled. On Thursday se'night, two men named Wm. Hickey and Matthew Culligan having had some difference, whilst engaged in a hurling match, at Cappakea, near O'Brien's bridge, in this county, Culligan gave Hickey fourteen cuts on the head, and broke both his arms, which occasioned his death in a few days. The Jury on the Inquest returned a Verdict of Wilful Murder against Callinan (sic), who has been apprehended. Mr. Charles Trousdell, of this town, has been appointed a Commissioner for recieving Affidavits in the Court of Exchequer in Ireland. Yesterday, a young boy, having gone to swim in the lake at Ballycoree, was unfortunatly drowned. Declan

    3. Hello, Some excerpts that I made from the Tulla baptismal register show members of the O'Dea family. The Tulla Parish Baptismal Register Jan. 1819 To March 28, 1846 1840 Sept. 21 "Anne. Pat Dolohunty. Bid Mac. Michl (Odea?). Bid (M)orony. Lis( )ty. [could be Lissycasey] This shows Anne Dolohunty, daughter of Pat Dolohunty and Biddy Mac. Her godparents were Michael (Odea?) and Bid (M)orony. The Dolohunty may have been resident in Lissycasey. These entries are very difficult to read and you need to examine the microfilm and make your own judgment. Regards, Thor Conway

    3. Hi Alanna Here's another coincidence - many years ago my mother would come each night from work complaining about the supervisor on our new railway building site. He would chip her for rushing for the train each morning and she didn't take too kindly to his comments. I laugh now nearly 50 years later - that man is now my husband. Poor mum must be turning over in her grave. Fortunately, she did have a good Irish sense of the ridiculous. I was contacted by a B Sheedy because he had seem a post of mine. He is a relatively close relative and gave me some good information. But with his family, he quit working on our history. Another person did the same in contacting me. He had a letter written by my g grandmother here in the states to his relative. He could not believe that I would know who the people were in the letter. I most certainly did, even my mother who was then in the letter just a child. I just wrote about my Elias Kelly Callahan and this letter writer was his widow. > > My mother, my brothers and I were traveling in Alaska some many years ago traveling by train from Mt McKinley to Anchorage. We had spoken to an older couple for most of the 8 hours. At the end of the trip, they asked my brothers where they worked. To shorten the story, they worked in a location in So. CA. They were from the upper mid West as Michigan. It turned out she was the mother of their supervisor!! > > I took a work required course for 2 days 40 miles to the west of me. My mother's direct family names associated with other surnames for a couple hundred years in say the early 1700's in Virginia and NC to 1869. They were involved with the Regulator Movement in NC and with the horrible Gov Tryon. Some people left and went to Georgia and SC. Her husband's people were "my Coffey's" who went to Georgia. I am not related to them, but if one sees a Coffey and a Jones and a Watts, then those Jones' and Watts' are mine. > > One just has to take the chance and try to see if there is a connection. 2. Thank you for the information on these Roughan and Hamilton families. I'm gathering what information I can on the Roughan surname from East Clare who might have had any ties with Limerick. Unfortunately, I've got to get back to births back to 1799-1845. The Six Mile Bridge area is just such a place that I'm interested in. Again, thank you for the information Kitty

    2. I have a Mary Roughan who married Patrick Hamilton on January 16, 1883 in St. Munchins RC church in Limerick City. Her father was Patrick Roughan and the witnesses were Patrick Connelly and Ellen Hamilton. The residence of Mary Roughan was difficult to read but looks like Bally--? More. Patrick Hamilton came from Six Mile Bridge in Clare and Patrick and Mary (Roughan) Hamilton lived there and raised their Hamilton family there. I am interested in the Hamilton family of Clare and have no further information on the Roughans. This information came from the civil marriage record.

You could check a map of Ireland and see if any are near your family's old homestead, then try writing them. (New Quay is not near Kilkee, so there may be no connection between the nine children who drowned and your family.) Finally, you could ask the Clare Champion to post an inquiry for you about Thomas O'Dea, or ask the Lisdeen postmaster (if there is one) if there are still relatives around. 1948 was not that long ago--there probably are. Finally, if you post again, you should change the subject line to something like O'Dea from Kilkee. Some people read only subject lines, and you want to catch the eye of people who might know the family. Good luck! 3. Dear Jennifer, Thank you so much for your reply. Is there any way of finding out where Thomas was burried?? As I said, we are planning to come to Ireland next year and we could chase up on his descendants if SKS could give me the info on this headstone. If not, we could go check his headstinewhen we get there. Do the Irish put parents names, wifes/husbands names on headstones? Are there many Churches and cemeteries around this area?? We have thought of hiring a car for 3/4 days and looking for my husbands descendants as we don't know if we will get back to Ireland in the future. Do you think that would be a good way to find people etc?? If not, can you give me some suggestions on waht to do and how to go about things. All help will be gratefully received. Thanks again for taking the time to get the information for me. Kindest regards Faye -----Original Message----- From: irl-clare-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-clare-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Jennifer Hyatt Sent: Saturday, 14 October 2006 9:01 PM To: irl-clare@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-CLARE] Thomas O'DEA Death Notice 1948 Fay, I went to the Local Studies Centre today and here's what was written about Thomas O'DEA. Clare Champion Feb 7 1948 STRANGE ROAD FATALITY Thomas O'DEA, aged 28 years of Baunmore, Lisdeen, Kilkee, met his death undeer tragic circumstances on Wed. night. As the driver of a bus which left Ennis about 6:30 was rounding a bend in the townland of Baunmore, he saw a man lying on the road facing the bus. Not having an opportunity of swerving in order to avoid the object, the only course open to the driver was to try and get the centre of the bus over the body and this he suceeded in doing. After passing over the man the bus stopped at once. On examination of the body it was found that the man was dead. The deceased it is learned was subject to periodical fits and it is surmised that in one of those he fell on the road and was unable to get up. On March 20, 1948 there is an acknowledgement of the family. However no names were listed. The aprents, family and relatives of the late Thomas O'DEA, Baunmore, Lisdeen, Co. Clare desire to return their most sincere thanks to all those who symathised with them in their recent sad bereavement; to those who sent Mass cards, telegrams and letters of sympathy; to those who called and personally attended to the remains and the funeral. They trust that this will be accepted by all as it would be impossible to reply individually. 3. Jo, I have heard of Shannon as a surname for some Clare folk but in those instances it is usually stated to be a derivative of Shanahan. I will now keep on the lookout for Giltinane on its own or in conjunction with Shannon. Sharon C.
