Mr. Brew, who had such a providential escape in this instance, was appointed to the constabulary a number of years since and was stationed in Kerry and afterwards in Clare. When the war with Russia broke out, Mr.Brew went out in the Commissariat Department, and was amoung the last of the British forces that left the Crimea. In that campaign he discharged his duties in a very satisfactory manner. On his return he resumed his rank in the constabulary, and was stationed in Cork when he recieved a telegram from Dublin Castle a few weeks since requiring his attendance in Dublin where he was informed that the Government had resolved to organise a police force in British Columbia, and, considering him a fit and proper person to take charge of it, he was offered the appointment. He immediately proceeded to London to recieve official instructions from Sir. E. Bulwer Lytton, Secretary to the Colonies, and it being necessary that he should proceed to his new sphere of duty at once, he took passage in the Austria, it being the first vessel ready for sail. We refer our readers to his own narrative for an account of what subsequently transpired. We sincerely congratulate Mr.Brew's friends in this county on his remarkable preservation. <I have today received valuation records for the person whom I am thinking from various indications is my great grandfather, John Butler> When I wrote of my information from the valuation office I referred to Killourney as a Parish - but it is the Townland. I'm so sorry, but I was so excited to get the informaton. Had Larry not called my attention to it, I would not have realized my mistake. So thanks much Larry. Edna
I have today received valuation records for the person whom I am thinking from various indications is my great grandfather, John Butler. It shows him on the property in Killourney Parish in 1880 but gone in 1883. That gives me a span of time when I could possibly check death records and see if anything fits. What I need is a pointer on how to find death records from the 1880s in County Clare. Any good leads out there? If so, please share them with me. I feel like I'm on the trail of something good here! Thanks ever.... Edna in Kansas USA

Hi list, Just wondering if I missed a response to a previous query as to if & when the proposed genealogy conference is being held. Time to make some travel plans and get it on my schedule here in US. It would certainly add a lot to my planned trip. Thanks to all involved. Jo Banks
Amongst the passengers leaving Ireland on the 'Stakesby' at Cork on July 8, 1823 was Thomas Boyle born 1790 at Cloneen, Co. Clare, accompanied by his wife Mary Checkley and their four children and his brother Henry. All went to Ontario under the Peter Robinson plan to West 1/2 lot #18 Concession 7, Packenham Township, Canada West [Ontario] - [in the Ottawa Valley]. In 1829 finding their holdings unsuitable to meet the needs of the family, they moved to Lot 27, Con. 11, in Huntley, near Panmure. From there they moved into Fitzroy Township on Lot 2, Conc.2. William Boyle their seventh son (1856-1926) raised a family there. Five children were born to William and his first wife Mary Ring (1861-1896), and one son, Harry, and a daughter, Bessie, to his second wife Susan Poole. About 1908, William bought the Edward Wilson farm on Lot 10, Conc. 3 at Antrim Village. The stone house on the lot had been built by Wilson (of Huntley) who, in turn, had bought the land from Peter Smith, whose father had received the original deed from the Crown. William Boyle was the Township clerk for many years, as well as serving as a Fitzroy councillor and township Reeve. [Ref. Good one Paul, I agree although the odds are in favour of Ireland winning because of the goal posts, AFL players only have to kick through the centre goal for maximum points and most are high kicks, in this game they have to kick into the net which can be blocked easier. So it would be hard to adjust their kicking style. However no matter what the rules or game format is ,it is certainly a great social event, good for the relationship between the descendants of our ancestors. Undoubtedly I'm sure all the players get together after the game for a Guinness etc. And as Padraig said "May the best team win" (on the day) Owen From: "Paul Kelly" <kellsp@optusnet.com.au> Subject: Re: [IRL-CLARE] International Football Match To: <irl-clare@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <003b01c6fb96$7f186850$6400a8c0@MapMaster> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Re not knowing who to barrack for. Congratulations - the better team on the day - IRELAND won - 48 -40. Close, but not a win for the Aussies. Well, the Aussies are coached by an Irish descendant - Kevin Sheedy. I guess we all have a conflict of interest. (I really didn't know who to barrack for). Must admit, it did liven up the list for a few moments. On and forward to next weekend. It wasn't classed as a great game by the pundits on the day, and Aussies who had most of the upper hand slipped up towards the end. I am looking forward to the second game in Croke Park next Sunday for which I have a premium seat! The Irish Independent 28th. October 2006. Irish immigrants have, for centuries, sought refuge in the United States. But in a twist on the American dream, the roles have now reversed. Many Americans see the "Old country" as the land of opportunity and are queuing up for work visas. For historians of Irish emigration, it looks like a remarkable reverse. American jobseekers queued around the block in mid-town Manhattan in New York last weekend to attend a job fair organized by the Irish state FAS. They were hoping to join a new wave of emigrants who are turning the tide of history by leaving America and seek their fortunes in Ireland. Passers-by must have been puzzled to see American citizens queuing up to leave the land of opportunity for a country that once a byword for poverty and hopeless backwardness. But keen observers of recent Irish migration patterns were hardly surprised. Nearly three times more Americans will move to Ireland this year than Irish people will move permanently to the US. Over the past two years, more than 9,000 Americans have moved to Ireland. Famous Americans Who've Moved Here.: Martin Shine: Hollywood star and Galway student. Michael Jackson: Oddball singer, turned Irish pimpernel. JP Donleavy: Best setting author. Michael Flatly Multi millionaire superhoofer. Des Bishop Comedian and broadcaster. Angela Lansbury: Cinema grand dame living in Cork. Bill Prasifica. Kathleen O' Toole. Former Boston Police Chief. Rebecca Miller Film Director.
