Hello Larry (and other listers) from chilly, winter's-in-the-air Wisconsin, US, This is marvelous....I only just joined the list on Friday and already have spotted familiar places mentioned by those wanting to 'mentor' and help others. Specifically, Sharon in Georgia, US, included my home town/county of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, as a place she is researching. My MULLINS roots (Patrik married to Bridget 'Biddy' Barry) were from Inagh, Kilseily, Broadford Parish, Co Clare, Ire., having emigrated to Manitowoc in 1849. I am looking forward to hearing what people are interested in researching and what other resources are available that I haven't yet used. Thanks (everyone) for your work and contributions. Oh....and for you 'locals'...I'd love for you to provide translations for your salutations....always wanting to learn a bit more of the native tongue, Jayne Mullins Madison, Wisconsin ----- Original Message ----- From: Larry Brennan To: IRL-CLARE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, November 05, 2006 4:04 AM Subject: [IRL-CLARE] Fw: Clare Roots Society-World Links. I could definitely be a contact for any research as regards Ireland and IOWA, USA My local library has many resources for all of Iowa and I have my own personal resources. I host or co-host the following sites in Iowa: Irish in Iowa (My own website) http://www.celticcousins.net/irishiniowa/index.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~ USGenWeb / IAGenWeb Projects: Iowa History Project http://iagenweb.org/history/ Iowa Old Press http://www.IowaOldPress.com/ Henry Co, IA USGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~iahenry/index.htm Scott Co, IA USGenWeb Project http://www.celticcousins.net/scott/index.htm Palo Alto Co, IA USGenWeb Project http://www.celticcousins.net/paloalto/index.htm USGenWeb Census Project - Iowa http://www.us-census.org/states/iowa/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And I also host Ireland Old News http://www.IrelandOldNews.com/ For personal research I have a JOYNT / JOINT / JOYENT, etc. one name study site: http://www.celticcousins.net/joynt/ Cathy Joynt Labath
Larry, I am very happy to hear of this great progress. I am also relieved to have this opportunity to apologize for my attempt a few months back to offer to serve as a mentor. I misphrased that, with the result that the list was flooded with the messages of other listmembers who are seeking their Clare families. I was trying to say that, having found my Clare family, I am ready to communicate on family history if that would interest or assist Clare residents wanting to know about the American part of their families. So, now I can re-state that good intention: I can serve as a mentor regarding the following research areas: Donnellan families of Clare and Galway (I have two Heritage reports and 10 years of personal research) Carberry families of Clare, Westmeath, and Waterford, with good contacts for Wexford, Armagh, and Australia (10 years of personal research; maintain a family YahooGroup) Tynan family of East Clare and Durkirk NY Lenihan family of East Clare (I have the Heritage report) Arkins family of East Clare (I have the Heritage report) Hudson Valley, New York (counties of Dutchess, Ulster, Columbia, Westchester, Putnam, Orange, etc.) Wisconsin, primarily counties of Manitowoc, Sheboygan, and Ozaukee State of Georgia Province of Quebec, Canada May I ask a small favor, when you get a chance: I need the obituary from the Clare newspaper for Catherine Walsh nee Tynan died 3/7/1927 of Clontra/Cloontra, Sixmilebridge Thanks so much. I look forward to all the events in this forging of a another means of sharing our common interest in Clare family history. As for websites, may I suggest Cyndi's List as the overall encyclopedia of anything related to genealogy. More than stashes of data, which are so locale-specific, I think helping family historians through the process of finding, analyzing, and re-directing their efforts is vital to making good progress in locating missing family members. >From a website devoted to Buffalo history: "A Profile of a Tavern Keeper: Anthony J. McGowan [an excerpt from McGowan's autobiography:] The life history of A.J. McGowan. Born on the 14th of March- 1869- of Irish parents, at a little town called Grey Grove in the parish of Kilmihil County Clare Ireland. Immigrated from that dear little country at the age of sixteen years and one month. and set sail for my adopted country on the good ship named the City of Chicago on the 19th day of May-1886-arrived at the harbor of NY several days later and was taken into old Castle Garden and remained there for a few hours until a friend called and took me out of there, and what a relief. He was in the liquor business in Brooklyn and naturally the first thing he done was take me in to a restaurant for a good dinner on the N. end of the Brooklyn Bridge... So we arrived at his place of business and stayed there for about one hour... he took me back to the saloon with him. He kept introducing me to all his customers as they came in... Near here (Buffalo) is where life started after a few days in NY I decided to make the trip to Buffalo, the grandest city in the world and after a few days I arrived at the old Erie Rail Road at Exchange and Michigan St. and was met at the station by a policeman named John Pyne who was known by all the tuff characters from Buffalo to San Francisco and he took me to my brothers home at Fulton and Chicago St. and after 2 weeks rest I applied for a job to Mr. Cunningham as a scooper better known now as grain forwarding. I appealed to Mr. Kennedy for a job who at that time had charge of all the freight coming into the Port of Buffalo. Worked at that line for a few months and things started to get quiet on the water front and one afternoon we were sitting on a tow board at the end of the in Bound freight house and in a general conversation he asked me how I'd like a job bartending. I said anything would be better than what we were doing at the present time. With the result I started the next morning tending bar at-19-Main St. which at that time was one of the most prominent parts of Buffalo. [end of excerpt] Later, Anthony J. McGowan was to become the manager of James Kennedy's Seabreaze Hotel on "The Island" off the foot of Main St. In 1897, he opened his own tavern at 206 Elk Street near the corner of Smith St. Mr. McGowan quickly became involved in local politics, becoming Democratic General Committeeman in the First Ward shortly after his arrival Buffalo. His rise into local politics continued in 1908, when he was appointed to the Department of Markets by then Mayor J.N. Adam and served as assistant superintendent in charge of the Elk Street market for 31 years. He later worked in the same capacity at the Black Rock Market after the Elk St. market closed in 1939. McGowan's life in Buffalo shows us a personal side of one of Buffalo's most diverse industries." from a page on the history of saloons in Buffalo NY: http://www.buffalonian.com/history/industry/brewing/growler/chapIII/buffsalooncapitol.html posted by Sharon Carberry
Hello Declan Thank you so much for all the newspaper extracts and associated information that you have made available to us over the years. Whilst I have only found one reference to my family being the James Liddy and Margaret Clancey marriage on 26 August 1861, I have found the articles to be very interesting and informative. I am hoping that there will be more to come. Best Wishes Ernene Smedley (nee Dillon) Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia. I must add that looking out of my window this morning, it is one of those days where you feel great to be alive. Yesterday we had the best soaking rain that we have had in quite some time. The rain was desperately needed to ease our drought conditions. This morning, it is a beautiful crisp summer morning and the sky is so blue & the sun is shining and the birds a are singing....need I say anymore !!!! It sure is a great place to live. I think I will head on down to the beach.

Davenport Democrat and Leader; Davenport, Scott, Iowa; Thursday, May 17, 1923 MISS BRENNAN SUCCUMBS TO A HEART ATTACK Aunt of Mrs. J.J. Dorgan Taken by Death Late Wednesday Evening. Miss Nora B. Brennan, resident of Davenport for the last 21 years, well known in musical circles and prominent in the work of the Sacred Heart parish, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. J.J. Dorgan, 907 Perry street, with whom she had resided for many years, at 11 o'clock Wednesday night. She was 70 years of age. One week ago, Miss Brennan sustained a heart attack from which she has never rallied. Up to the time she was stricken, she was very active. Miss Brennan was born in county Claire, Ireland, and at the age of six months came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dennie Brennan, to Bellafontaine, Ohio, where she received her education. With her sister, Miss Mary Brennan, she came to Indianaoplis as a young lady and remained there until 40 years ago, coming thereafter to Rock Island. Her niece, Mrs. J.J. Dorgan made her home with Miss Brennan since childhood and at the time of Mrs. Dorgan's marriage Miss Brennan came to Davenport to live with her. One of the youngest of the elder women in keeping abreast of the times, Miss Brennan was always deeply interested in musical affairs, never missing any of the concerts given in the Tri-cities by prominent artists. She also was devoted to her church and had countless friends in the Tri-cities who knew her affectionately as Aunt Nora. Those who survive are two sisters, Miss Mary Brennan, who lived with her, and Mrs. B. Murphy of New York City; and the following nieces and nephews: Mrs. J.J. Dorgan of Davenport, Mrs. Nellie Burns, Miss Alice Murphy and Mrs. Otto Van Bachelle of New York City, Mrs. Rena Johnson of Bellefontaine, O., the Misses Mary and Ella Brennan of Rock Island, William P.
