    3. Declan, Thank you very much for the work you are doing in transcribing these RIC records. A question: are you transcribing this data by hand or are you scanning the Journal pages and using some kind of optical character recognition software to transfer the text ? I'd be interested to know whether old newspapers such as the Clare Journal can be transcribed in this fashion using a digital camera and inexpensive OCR software. I know that the British Library, for example, is scanning and indexing old newspapers but they are using very-big-budget equipment and software and infrastructures which are way beyond the means of our ilk. If a cheap digital camera/OCR solution were feasible it would leverage the efforts of the zillions of amateurs who are beavering away in the archives and reading rooms. Maybe I'll buy myself an OCR package for Christmas and experiment. If you or someone else who regularly visits the Manse could get a few good shots of Clare Journal pages with a good (e.g. 6+ megapixel) camera and send them to me as JPG files I could have a try. But maybe you have done all this already. Mahon complained after the fight that his leg was broken. The defendants said that they had no animosity against each other and had not recieved any injuries in the scuffle. A fine of sixpence and costs was inflicted. Clare Journal 29 May 1876 Constabulary Ball Practice - The following is the correct score of the best shots at the recent Constabulary ball practice near Ennis viz:- First day - The distance was at 100, 200, 300 and 400 yards. The shooting was well contested on the first day by three of the men, Sub-Constables Cronin, O'Connor and Cimmiskey, the two former stationed in Ennis, the latter at Crusheen. Cronin scored 14 points at the hundred range, out of a possible 16, O'Connor same, Cimmiskey 13. At the 200 range Cronin scored 24 out of a possible 32 ; O'Connor 27 ; Cimmiskey 23. O'Connor in the end outnumbered the others having scored a total of 56, Cimmiskey 54 ; Cronin 53. Second day - Sub-Constable Dwyer came off the victor on this occasion. He scored a total of 38 ; Doyle 35 ; Sub-Constable Kelly 38 and Harwood 37, (New Hall) ; Sub-Constable Fagan 31, (Ennis). Clare Journal 14 Aug 1876 Ballyvaughan Petty Sessions .... The Court will consist of Sub-Inspector Wilton (president), Sub-Inspector O'Donel (member), Sub-InspectorQuill (prosecutor). The following transfers have taken place lately in this county by order of County Inspector Henry, viz. - Sub-Constable Charles O'Sullivan, from Kilfenora to Tulla ; Sub-Constable Richard Carroll, from Limerick to Scariff ; Sub-Constable Patrick Burns, from Castlebar to Ennis ; Sub-Constable John Scullon, from Waterford (city) to Ballyvaughan ; Sub-Constable James Ayrey, from Kilkenny city to Ennis ; Sub-Constable Henry Black, fro Tipperary to Kilfenora ; Sub-Constable Martin Moran, from Coolbawn to Kilbane ; Sub-Constable Cornelius Reardon, from Templemore to Ballinacally ; Sub-Constable John Sheridan from Thurles to Ballina (joint station) ; Sub-Constable P. Clare Journal 18 Dec 1876 Sub-Constable James M'Cormink, of the Royal Irish Constabulary, O'Brien's Bridge, County Clare, has retired from the force on a pension of £58. Constable Macnamara, Ennis and Constable Nicholson, Kilkee were amoungst the successful candidates of Dublin last week for the rank of Head Constable. We congratulate both on their advancement. The people of Ennis are well pleased at Mr. Macnamara's promotion and only regret that such necessitates his removal from their town. They will miss his portly form, and as well, his good natured joke, which on all ocasions he had ready for gratuitous circulation, ever new and varied. His courteous and gentlemanly bearing to all while strictly performing his duty at the same time won him many friends. Being four years in the County Inspector's office, the duties of which he was the most efficient in, he is eminently qualified for his advanced position. We feel sure that Head-Constable Macnamara will continue in the future, as in the past, a terror to evil doers and a friend to all those who live within the law. We feel sure that the inhabitants of Kilkee entertain the same good will towards Head-Constable Nicholson. Declan

    3. Curious is the differences in shooting scores between new and old weapons. While in the army at ranges of 100, 300, and 500 yards with an M14, I scored 279 out of a possible perfect score of 300. Anything above 210 was classified as expert so I got a medal for that which I still have. 1. [IRL-CLARE] A thought-Nat'l. Heritage Ctr?
    2. Debbie Fall
    3. With lots of informed people on this list I was wondering if anyone knows if a National Heritage Center has ever been proposed. By this I mean that ONE heritage center would be open for commissioned searches. Records from all the centers would be placed on one large database within one building. This would cut costs in keeping heritage centers up and running and it might even bring down the cost of a search. I was just wondering if this has ever been considered. I realize that approval rights might not be easy from sources such as churches. I had heard that LDS was trying to get approval from all sources that their films are from to allow them to put the records on their family search site. Not sure how that is progressing, but I would assume it would be a very difficult job to accomplish and long time to complete IF ever. Thanks for any feed back.... Debbie from Indiana

    1. [IRL-CLARE] Ward's Island, NYC in 1870 census
    2. Sharon Carberry
    3. "Ward's Island Park is located on Ward's Island, a 255-acre landmass lying in the northern end of the East River, between Manhattan and Queens. ...The island lay largely abandoned until 1840, when overcrowded Manhattan sought convenient locations for almshouses, mental health facilities, and potter's fields (graveyards for the poor). Hundreds of thousands of bodies were relocated to Ward's Island from the Madison Square Park and Bryant Park potter's fields. The State Emigrant Refuge, a hospital for sick and destitute immigrants, opened in 1847 and it was the biggest hospital complex in the world during the 1850s. The predominance of public works led the City to purchase Ward's Island outright in 1851. Twelve years later, the New York City Asylum for the Insane opened on the island. From 1860 until the 1892 opening of Ellis Island, Ward's Island along with Castle Clinton on Manhattan's southern tip welcomed America's newcomers at its immigration station." http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_your_park/historical_signs/hs_historical_sign.php?id=12869 I stumbled across the 1870 census, done on June 18th, naming emigrants at this location, which that year was in the 12th Ward, 6th District. If you have access to the census films, you can start with the superintendent and physicians, in series M593, roll 989, printed numeral 174 for the page/handwritten numeral 43 as the page. (There is no E.D. nor sheet numbers for that year.) If you have access to online versions of the census, a unique name to get you to the right spot is the Catholic priest Joseph Prohouski, age 48, born Poland. Unfortunately the info given is the usual: name, age, country of birth. It would have been wonderful for counties to be specified. These folks are clearly labelled as emigrants (not inmates). There are at least 30 pages of them. Sharon Carberry

In November, 1877, he was appointed policeman, serving in this position about a year and a half, when he was appointed Chief of Police, holding that office until November 15, 1881. During his term of office, no crimes or misdemeanors were committed in which the perpetrators were not promptly arrested and punished. In some of them, as is frequently the case, there was no clew to start on, but he never failed to bring the offenders to justice, showing great skill and ability as a detective. In politics, he is a Democrat, taking great interest in political affairs." http://www.kancoll.org/books/andreas_ne/platte/platte-p6.html The censuses indicate that the abovegiven birth year is up to ten years off, as John is likely older than listed in the bio. 1880 census Columbus, Platte Co., Nebraska MacMahon John 34 Ire policeman Mary 32 " Maggie E. 13 NY Mary A. 11 NY Katey 9 Ire Lydia 6 NE Eliza Ann 4 Marcus T. 1 1900 NE Platte Co. 3. A Charda, As previously listed The Clare Roots Society which was formed in April 2006 is progressing well. >From a simple letter in the local newspapers we have progressed to an attendance at the last talk was 54 where we were given details of the RIC. with regard to Genealogy. Declan Barron is our Chairperson back here in Clare. I am down to make a presentation at the end of November with regard to "Genealogy-Computer-The Internet". As part of the internet section I want to introduce ROOTSWEB both the Mailing List & the Message Boards. In particular I want to show the value of these Boards to the people back here in Clare. In addition I would like to seek out from the wider world people, list members that would be prepared to act as Mentors with regard to their Country or Area. I would present the mentor on the night of the talk as a contact person who would point the person in the right direction with regard to their search within that area. In addition we have all found useful web sites down through the years with regard to Clare contacts abroad, Could individual list member please forward the sites and addresses that they found useful with regard to research. "YOUR COUNTY NEEDS YOU" Mise le meas, Larry.
