    3. Congratulations. We all like to hear "Good News" stories. I keeps us going when we seem to be getting nowhere. Can imagine your joy - I know I yelled and danced when I finally found my granny after 25 years of searching - one on the third last frame of the film I was reading. Give us all heart. 3. Dear List, When I was trying to find the pathway I had used to find my Daniel Scanlon, I found a second Daniel Scanlon who also seemed to be My Daniel. I am not sure, but it looks as if Daniel was booked on the Republic but there is no visa number. Maybe he did not know about visa numbers. The Republic was to leave Cobh on 26 Sept 1926 and arrives 5 Oct 1926. The ship he left on was the Leviathan sailing from Southampton, England on 21 Sept 1926 and arrives on 27 Sept 1926. His visa number is shown on the second ship. His occupation is different on each ship. On the first ship he gave two townlands. Maybe he was working in the second one as he had left home at age 16 and shipped at 17. Alanna

EDITOR'S DESK: NEWS, NOTES; SOME SITES WORTH SEEING NEWS. Ancestry.com recently announced the completion of a three-year project to digitize and post online all available U.S. passenger lists from 1820 through 1960. This project covers more than 100 ports of arrival and 100 million names. The collection includes 7 million passenger list images and a thousand ship images. It's estimated that 85 percent of Americans can find at least one ancestor in this collection. You'll discover not only the immigrants, but all travelers -- handy for tracking "birds of passage" (those who moved between their homelands and the United States multiple times before settling here for good), ancestors who visited family back in the "old country," and even some ancestors or relatives who went on Caribbean cruises in the 1950s, for example, may show up in these lists. The Ellis Island records were re-indexed by Ancestry.com and do not contain the efforts of Ellis Island database (EIDB). By having another group re-index a record group, errors in the first one may not appear in the re-indexing. The major advantage to the Ancestry site is that it indexes arrivals after 1924, which is where the year the EIDB ends. To commemorate the launch of the collection, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com/) offers free access to its entire "Immigration Collection" through the end of November. Click on "US Immigrant Collection" on its home page. You will need to register with the site in order to access the database. And, keep in mind that the free access is only to the new "Immigration Collection" -- not to everything else at Ancestry.com. These various databases identify more than 100 million passengers. Ancestry.com experts, including more than 1,500 paleographers (handwriting specialists), spent more than 1.8 million hours and typed 4.5 billion keystrokes to create the fully searchable passenger list index. The company notes that for the first time, people can look to a single centralized source online to find all readily available U.S. passenger list records. It also announced plans to release in December all Hamburg [Germany] Emigration lists 1850-1934 with, initially, an index for the years 1890-1912. Ancestry.com, which supports RootsWeb.com, has invested more than $100 million to acquire, digitize, and make searchable online the invaluable historical records such as the exclusive U.S. census collection (1790-1930), birth, marriage and death records, photographs, military records and more. It now has more than 5 billion names in the 23,000 searchable databases. * * * 8. 3. Dear List, I receive two columns about once a month. One is from Rootsweb and one from Ancestry. I read through them and usually delete them. I may have the one that had the information I used. I will look through my old columns. In this case there was a link to Ancestry immigration data base. It has an index and I put in Daniel Scanlon and low and behold there was a set of data that looked like it was he. Three items were the ship's name and his age of 17 and the year of 1926. I went in and there he was!!!!!!!!!! I tried to see if I could find some of my Sheedy's. I knew, or thought I did, that Daniel landed in NY. My Sheedy's could have come into Boston or some other place. Give me some time and I will see if I kept the link. I must have, as I need some time to work on those Sheedy's. Say, I just realized that I need to look up Daniel's siblings on that site. So, thanks for your support. Give me a couple of days. Alanna

    1. [IRL-CLARE] Clare Journal 1831-2
    2. Declan Barron
    3. Hi, Clare Journal 30 May 1831 Francis Macnamara, Esq., of Aranview, has been appointed a Magistrate in this county. Capt. McDonald, of the 5th Foot, stationed at Clifden, and Capt. Spence, of the same Regiment, stationed at Ennistymon, have been appointed Magistrates of the county Clare. Captain Studdert, R.N., of Kilrush, is appointed to the Commission of the Peace. A large number of men, embodied in Dublin under Sir John Harvey, for the Police in this County, have reached here. Fifty of them are now in Tulla, under the immediate command of Mr. Colthurst, Stipendiary Magistrate. Yesterday, while several persons were engaged making bargins, and marking out portions of the bog of Doora, to cut turf for the present season, a man, dressed in woman's clothes, went in amongst them, and warned them off, cautioning them not to give more than half the price that was paid for the ground last year. The order was immediatly obeted. Extract of a letter, dated Kilrush, May 27 1831 It being so long since you have heard from this part of King Terry's territories, that I believe you suppose we are in a state of repose; but I assure you the contrary is the case .......... Crofton Moore Vandeleur, Randal Borough, and Joseph Lucas Cox, Esqs., ........... Cooleen Lodge, beyond Carrigaholt, the property of Robert Cox, of Fairy Hill, in the County Tipperary, Esq., a Magistrate for this County, was demolished, furniture &c., destroyed. ........ Mr. Borough, Mr. Carey, C.C., and a strong force of Police and Military are escorting through the street a party of Terrys to Ennis Gaol .......... R. Borough, Cappa Lodge, Esq. Extract of a letter, dated Knock, May 25 1831 ........ the house of John Culligan, of Benvoran, in the parish of Kilmurry, was knocked down and himself sworn to give half his land to a person who had some years back possessed it. On the same night the house of Patrick Culligan, of Carhunisky, in the same parish, was visited, but not finding him at home, all his Sunday clothes and those of his wife were cut to pieces. In the parish of Killofin, several houses were searched for arms, and two men, named Molony and Frs. Healy, cruelly beated. On Saturday two remaining houses of poor Cotter, of Lack, in the Parish of Kilmichael, were destroyed; fortunatly Cotter was not on the lands, for when his dwelling house was a short time back destroyed, a humane neighbour anf friend, John Pyne, of Tullycrine, gave him and his family shelter in an out-house. These heartless legislators, however, not satisfied with the mischief already done, seized two of Cotter's labourers, placed them on their knees, and with guns at their breasts swore them to go to Pyne and tell him that Lady Clare ordered him, on pain of death, to turn Cotter and his family out. ........ visited, amoungst others, Mr. Thomas Studdert, of Danganelly, ...... attacked the house of Mr. Gilbert Standish O'Grady, of Faunus, in the Parish of Killimur, and after breaking all the windows ...... Clare Journal 11 June 1831 The following eight Stipendiary Police Magistrates, are now fixed in this county - Major Rowan, Captain Dyar, Walter Weldon Molony, Tompkins Brew, Major Brown, Capt. Warburton, Captain Vignoles, and Captain Colthurst. - The stations are Miltown, Newmarket, Corofin, Kilrush, Killaloe, Burren, Ennis and Tulla. Clare Journal 30 June 1831 On Thursday night last, the house of Giles Talty, near Miltown, was attacked, when they beat him dreadfully and took away his daughter. The moment Captain Roberts, Chief Magistrate, heard the circumstance hi instantly proceeded to Miltown, and took the imformations of Talty. Having asserted that the lads had taken her twords Kilrush, he proceeded there and having called on Lieut. Carey, C.C.P., who accompanied him, and after some pursuit they seceeded, in the morning, in finding the daughter, but unfortunatly the man that took her away got imformation of the approach of the police and made off. We are happy to say Captain Roberts has suceeded in arresting three of the gang. ......... a man named Thomas McMahon, who was arrested ..... murder ..... bail ..... was found on Sunday last, in the lake of Kyle, near Cullane, with a rope around his neck, to which was attached a large stone ........ not his own act. The body of McMahon was found floating on Sunday, by Mr. Bridgeman, who had been boating on the lake. ........ Patrick Connors and John Cullinan, found guilty on Monday, of the murder of Mr. Blood, and whose trial we report at lenght, underwent the final sentence of the law, yesterday, near to the place where the murder was perpitrated. ...... Rev. Mr. McIncrow ..... Clare Journal 10 May 1832 On Monday night last, a party of Constabulary Police, stationed at Bunratty, under the command of Edmund McMahon, Esq., Chief Constable, succeeded in apprehending Patrick Hynes, charged with the murder of John Glynn, steward to Pierse Creagh, Esq., of Dangan, in April, 1831. We are glad to percieve by Canada Papers of March last, that Francis Perry, eldest son of Mr. John Perry, of this town, has been appointed Barrister, Advocate, Attorney, Solicitor, and Proctor of all his Majesty's Courts in the Province of Montreal. The appointment is dated February, 1832. Thursday night, six fellows broke into the residence of John Canny, Esq., of Ballycasey, county Clare, and demanded of him the rents he had been recieving ..... Canny had dined that day with his brother, and fortunatly left the money in his possesion ....... Declan

    3. Iowa Recorder; Greene, Butler, Iowa; February 15, 1939 Rev. Father Sheehy, Former Local Priest 20 Years, Dies. Served as Priest for 43 Years Since Ordained at Dublin. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock at Waucoma, Iowa, for Father James Sheehy, former pastor of St. Mary's Catholic church here. He passed away at his home in Waucoma Sunday evening after an illness extending over a short period. Even though he had not been in the best of health for the past few months, his death came as a surprise to his many friends and former parishioners here. He was pastor of St. Mary's church in Greene for nearly 20 years and in 1916 was transferred to Waucoma where he served up to the time of his death. Father Sheehy was born in county Claire, Ireland, May 28, 1873, completed his studies in his native land. He was ordained at All Hallows college, Dublin, Ireland, on June 20, 1896 and immediately took up his work in the archdiocese of Dubuque. He served as assistant at St. Patrick's church in Dubuque and from there he transferred to the pastorate at Greene. He is survived by a sister in New York and two sisters as well as many other relatives in Ireland. Funeral mass will be held at Waucoma on Thursday at 10 o'clock and burial will be Thursday afternoon at Mt. Olivet at Dubuque. Quite a number from Greene, including Father Hogan and Father Murphy, expect to attend the funeral services at Waucoma tomorrow. 3. I saw that show and it was abit one sided. there were three other ships in teh second fleet. ONe of which was teh neptune. My GGGG Grandmother was on that ship, and about 1/3 of the women on that ship did not survive the journey, and would have had to endure the lurid ways of the seafarers of the time. These women often married the first man they set eyes on in the colony. By the time she died through accidental death in 1809 my GGGG Grandmother was a very well respected person within the colony. She held 100acres of land with most of it under tillage producing a variety of crops. Her funeral was attanded by many people in the comunity with many travelling up to 20 miles. Her husband at teh time was an Irish convict named William Mason, her previous hasband had disappeared around 1800, his name was John Ryan(Bryant). Cheers PK Sevevnth Gen.
