Good to know more about Eric's inquiry and its origin, Larry. I want to support your efforts at stirring interest among Clare residents in pursuing their family history and in using the Internet to connect to us who are Clare descendants no longer in Ireland. In this instance, the info being posted was so piece-meal that injecting encouragement to consult a pro is really the nicest thing that I can do. Those who have done Mass. research are familiar with the good facilities and with the ones which are not much worth the effort. I have heard complaints about the Mass. Archives for years, so I have avoided the place myself. One of the best facilities, the New England Historic and Genealogical Society in downtown Boston has not been mentioned - with three floors packed with films and books, as well as helpful staff members visible at all times, it is an excellent place to use. Just as descendants outside Ireland tend to rush to use the Heritage Centres when first wishing to know more about their Irish ancestors, current residents in Ireland may place too much importance on these Rootsweb lists as a source of useful, perhaps even comprehensive information. I am, as often posted previously, a proponent of a family historian reading up on the jurisdiction involved in research. Just as there are great books on doing Irish research, there are excellent guides on how to approach gen. research in the U.S. I am listing some of those below, in case the Clare Library may wish to include one in its collection for the benefit of Clare residents. I think these Clare lists are a wonderful resource when, after knowing the basics of research in a particular place and having done initial research, a family historian needs to compare notes with others in order to better evaluate data and determine what next to consult. I also happen to know how very knowledgeable and motivated a researcher that Dennis Ahearn is, although his rate is a bit steep. One efficient paid search may be worth the expense, rather than following well-intentioned leads here and there over a period of time. With that I will get off my soapbox. Sharon C. I am trying to sit back and not say anything, because this is the season of good will. However, there are instances when someone may do better by engaging professional services for research. Eric Shaw, introduced to the list via one such person, is likely able to also engage an American for that his research (see http://www.hoganstand.com/general/identity/extras/roots/stories/carrolls.htm and may well receive the desired information much more efficiently that way, in view of the scattered bits and pieces of guidance being offered on the list. I commend those stepping forward in the role of SKS, but, for one thing, I know there are 19th-century-naturalization cards for Mass. county/city courts at the Waltham NARA branch because I have collected all the Carberrys out of those when I lived up that way. I also know that Dennis Ahearn is a professional genealogist (besides being TIARA webmaster) who goes to that facility on a regular basis; there also may well be volunteers for that purpose on the various gen. lookup sites which may be found on Cyndislist.com. If Mr. Shaw is serious about finding his American-bound relative, there are better ways of going about it than floating an inquiry on this list. The free way is not the best way. Sorry to be blunt. Those on the list, such as myself, can go back to our own family research and doing holiday activities, without feeling that we are being stingy towards a fellow Clare descendant. Tom is correct. I found that the Massachusetts Archives, attached to the JFK library at Boston Univ. has the Naturalization Papers in their Judicial Section. Now all we need is SKS in the Boston area willing to go there for Eric. In regards to NATURALIZATIONS in USA ; most any COURT could receive INTENT and other papers and act upon them up to about 1906 when the US GOV. took over.NARA, as it is known ,does NOT have any of records previous to 1906 UNLESS they were DONATED TO NARA- as I REMEMBER. Going to the particular STATE WEB-SITE may be help-ful...TOM
Jeanne and Eric, Most of the naturalizations I think have to be looked up in the Federal Archives Centers. Perhaps some SKS who lives close to one (I don't) would volunteer to do this. Hi, Eric, I don't know if this is going to be helpful or not, as I have no way of truly confirming whether or not he's the same man, but I found a Patrick Carroll who emigrated in 1887 from Ireland, b. abt. 1854, in Hampden County, Massachusetts, in the 1900 census. He was married by that time to Johanna with no children born after 12 years of marriage. His occupation was listed as Sr. fireman. His citizenship status was listed as alien. I can send you the image if you are interested. Then, there were a couple more possibilities in that census, but none lived in the Boston area. That fact doesn't rule out these others, but I would start in the Boston area and eliminate those before moving outward. I looked in the 1910 census to see if I could find that man or couple again, but I had no luck. The next avenue of research would likely be to check if that one in Hampden Co. had received his citizenship. However, I don't have any experience in researching in the Boston area, and Ancestry.com's databases for Massachusetts don't include naturalisations. Perhaps someone else on this list can help with that?
